Chapter 18

A Confrontation Deferred

I waited in the dim light of a study's side room, sensing the tension in the estate while my heart beat in an unforgiving rhythm. The betrayal was so profound that it almost broke me, and it had been three days since I found documents in Jack's office that connected him to my father's financial downfall. Since then, I've been struggling with the reality and my broken trust in the man I once loved. Moreover, I was resolved to face him now.

Every step I took reverberated through the mansion's quiet hallways as I paced the whole length. The sky appeared to be grieving for my destroyed world in some way while the storm raged outside. The screen was still dark as I shakily grasped my phone, and there were no messages to help me navigate. The weight of the papers in my purse made me feel cursed because they were a physical reminder of everything that had been lost. How could my father's killing have been orchestrated by Jack, the one I thought would keep me safe?

I had mentally rehearsed the confrontation a thousand times. I watched as the pressure of my questioning caused his well-crafted façade to crumble and his barriers to collapse. However, the reality was, as is often the case, much more complicated and harsh.

After I eventually located the intestines, I went to his study, which is a castle of falsehoods and a sanctuary of secrets. At the doorway, I paused, waiting for a noise that would signal his approach. With my heart thumping in my ears, I opened the door slowly.

Jack was sitting at his desk with perfect posture as usual. I had grown to admire and loathe the cold detachment and sharp features of his face, which were highlighted by the long, narrow shadows created by a solitary lamp. He looked up as I walked in, his eyes softening momentarily with what I thought was regret, then hardening again.

Why are you here, Amelia, at this hour? He asked in a steady, measured tone of speech.

I closed the door slowly and methodically so he wouldn't see how unsteady my hands were. "Jack, we must speak. Certain documents and data that I have uncovered directly connect you to the death of my father.

A period of stillness ensued. The feelings that boiled behind Jack's swimming eyes were fear, grief, wrath, and an unidentified feeling. He steepled his fingers and finally sank back in his chair. He said, "Amelia, you know that some things are best left buried," in a firm and uncompromising manner.

I was so furious that I stumbled over my words. Interred? How would you formulate that? My father's legacy and everything he created were destroyed by the choices you made. Jack, you were someone I had faith in. The man I believed to be my friend was real, I believed.

Jack squinted and straightened his eyes. "You have no idea everything I've had to do to survive in this world," he added in a voice that was low and threatening. Was it really as easy as dismantling a business, in your opinion? The war was on, Amelia. Every decision had to be well thought out, and sacrifices were required during the fight.

I took a step forward and felt my skin burn from the paper in my bag. "Given up? Was my family's future and my father's business at stake? What's the goal of all this? Turn into equals? Do you have authority?

There was a resigned sigh from him, and his face was unintelligible. I did what was expected of me. I never meant for you to learn about it in this manner, or even to learn about it at all. But you have to realize that there were repercussions for my decisions.

My eyes were watering, so I attempted to follow what he was saying. "What happened? How would that work? Tell me what's going on, Jack. I'm worthy of knowing the truth.

He briefly averted his gaze, his mouth tensed as though he were fighting inner demons. My heart ached as I saw the agony in his eyes when he turned around. The reality, Amelia, is that your father's passing was inevitable. It must be a far bigger war than any of us. I have to decide between preserving the empire and honoring your family's history.

I shook my head since I couldn't comprehend what he was saying. Do you mean to keep the empire safe? However, my father owned that empire. In what ways does power hold greater significance for you than family?

A pained expression appeared on Jack's confront, his facial features fluttering with the precariousness he so seldom displayed. It was an important choice I made. We couldn't stop some forces from at work. Those rivals and unscrupulous individuals who perceived my father's expansion as a danger planned the financial catastrophe and the sabotage. I have to take extreme steps to survive.

When I said, "Moreover, you let your relatives endure the price for your survival?" my voice broke.

I flinched away from his attempts to console me as my confidence dissipated like a haze. He said, "I never intended for it to get to this point," in a low voice. "Every day, I deal with the fallout from the decisions I make. But you have to realize that the repercussions would have been much more disastrous if I had done nothing.

Trying to contain my emotions, I put my fingers to my eyes. "I thought you would have loved me for all those years." You saved my life. I now realize, however, that you were as evil as those who betrayed my man.

Desperation and implicit accusations stained the ensuing silence. Jack gazed straight into my eyes, as though he were begging me to see the truth in his own tormented reflection. Almost inaudibly, he said, "I committed it for us." "For the possible future that we could have."

But what happens to the future? I gave a nasty sneer. "If all I held precious is a lie, which possibility is there?"

Jack leaped up and scratched the chair on the shiny floor. His features hardened again, his soft vulnerability replaced by a mask of icy resolution. "You're asking questions that you're not prepared for the answer," he remarked, and his voice broke the quiet.

As I approached him, I spoke in a tone that was a combination of betrayal and despair. "No, Jack." I'm all set. I want to hear about everything, including betrayals, sacrifices, and transactions. I'm curious about what led you to take this route.

Flashed in his eyes was a mixture of fury and deep regret, perhaps even sadness. Certain realities are simply unsafe, Amelia. The enormity of the matter is beyond your comprehension.

I could feel the room closing in on us, and the air was thick with our mixed feelings. I should be aware! Why you let my father suffer and our family fall apart is something I need an explanation for.

Just before it touched my arm, Jack's hand faltered. I waited a moment for him to comfort me, and then he drew away and spoke louder. "I made the required preparations to protect you. To keep us safe? You will only increase our suffering, though, if you keep going in this direction.

The weight of his words knocked me to the ground. I took a step back and shook my head, as though to dispel the haze of betrayal and rage. It amazes me that you would give up everything for power. Jack, you were something I had faith in. I put my life in your capable hands.

He turned and saw black eyes in the distance. Trust, Amelia, is a brittle concept. Once it is broken, it is very challenging to fix.

The burden of my anguish was causing my chest to tighten. It might be best that it's broken, then. Maybe I shouldn't have trusted you at all.

Only the far-off throb generated by the old pipes in the mansion shattered the thick silence between us. Once more, Jack's eyes met mine, and I saw a flash of what I could only call regret. And he continued, whispering, "I had never wanted to hurt you." "However, certain confrontations alter us irrevocably."

I heard footsteps and a tremulous voice coming down the corridor before I could reply. Jack tensed up and looked toward the door. The words "We have not much time," he muttered. "A stranger is on the way."

Now that I had found the papers, I gripped my bag tighter since they were blazing with their own secret cargo. "Jack, will you be there?" I made the demand in a voice that was shaking with fear and rage.

I could see by his hesitation that he wasn't sure if he should tell me more or keep it to himself. With a step back, he said, "It's unsafe to say." "I can't take that chance."

I squinted. And what's in danger? Me? What prospects do I see for my family?

I was unable to determine whether Jack's quivering eyelids were an act of sorrow or a last-ditch effort to keep me safe. Amelia, some things are better kept quiet. You run a greater risk of destroying what you are attempting to save the farther you go.

I took a deep breath because the conflict in the room became intolerable. "Jack, you can't silence me. Despite how difficult it may seem, I must face reality.

For a brief while, he closed his eyes, seemingly battling personal problems. He had a look of weary resignation on his face when his eyes opened once more. The word "wonderful," he mentioned. "Be understanding, though, that there is definitely no going back once you violate this limit."

Jack's most trusted aide, a man with a grizzled face and a clipboard in his hand appeared before I could ask him any more questions. "The conference room is where the board is located, sir. His words were hurried: "We demand you immediately."

After glancing back and forth between me and the assistant, Jack muttered something. "I have to vacation, Amelia," he remarked in a sarcastic whisper. We're not done talking yet. Later, I'll tell you everything. As though to offer me one final consolation, he extended his hand, then turned away.

The fragile thread that had held us together was crumbling as I stood there. "Jack, hold on!" The door slammed as I called for him, leaving me by myself with the damning evidence in my luggage and my brain spinning.

With tears streaming down my cheeks from perplexity and betrayal, I collapsed onto a nearby chair. After Jack's role in my father's death was revealed, my whole world was flipped upside down. The papers, the concealed envelope, and his vague words had made me forget the man who was as mysterious as he was furious.

However, my phone started vibrating in my hand as I gathered my disorganized thoughts. When I looked at the screen, I saw that an unidentified number was ringing. I answered, trembling my fingers.

"Hello?" I managed to make my voice crack.

The voice came back, stammering and full of static. "You two have overreached yourself, Amelia. Finding the truth only serves to make things worse. The words "...stay a distance from the private information or they will consume you" were spoken, and then the voice stopped.

I was left in a suffocating quiet as the conversation abruptly terminated before I might suggest who it was. As a sobering reminder I was not alone in this maze of lies, I stared in dread at the phone message.
