Chapter Eighty-Two

***Faye***

I hear Scorpius gasp, so I know I have to get up and investigate what’s going on now. I see him standing by a shelf, holding what looks like an old journal in his hand ever so carefully. I walk up behind him, peeking around his arm to see the journal before speaking softly, “What is that?” Scorpius jumps and clutches the journal tightly so as not to drop it before turning to face me, “Faye, you scared the shit out of me. I was looking for books about the prophecy to see if we could figure anything out when I saw this. It’s never been on the shelves before, so I’m not sure how it ended up here, but it’s a handwritten journal. That’s not what shocked me. However, it’s the fact that this journal belongs to Hadrian’s father.” I stare at him, confused, “But… didn’t his father pass away, and they couldn’t really bring any belongings when they ran?” He nods at me, “That’s exactly what I was thinking, so I’m not sure how it ended up here. All I know is that from skimming through it, I have noticed it mentions the prophecy several times, so I’d like to check it out and see if it may have anything useful in it.” I nod before looking at the other books on the shelf, “That’s a good idea. What other books do you need from this section for us to start?” He points out 4 books on the shelf, and I grab 2 while he grabs the others. We make our way over to the set of chairs, pulling the side table between them to set the books on so we can be closer and review the information together.

I grab a book from the stack. It isn’t a super thick book, but it looks old as if maybe it was written a century or so ago. I opened the cover and noticed that I was right; it was a century ago. I flip the first page to see a photo of 4 beautiful wolves painted in black and white. I stop, absolutely stunned at the beautiful picture. I can’t help but smile as I flip the page again, opening to the beginning paragraph. I skimmed it and realized it’s an introduction to the prophecy and when it was first mentioned.

It seems that an elder of a powerful pack had a dream one night about 4 wolves warping the world from greys and blacks to wonderful colors. As the weeks went on, she had this dream repeatedly, and small details were added every time. Once she reached the end of these dream cycles, the words of the prophecy came to her. She went from seeing the world in a horrible state with lots of war to seeing the world coming together and forming something beautiful, followed by the words of the prophecy: “Four powerful mates will unite, the strongest in history. They will change the views of our world to make it a better, more accepting place. We rejoice in the day we see these mates together.” She told her pack alpha and the other elders about this. The alpha seemed ecstatic, thinking that this prophecy had to be about someone in their pack bringing them great glory. Over the years, he was more and more disappointed by realizing none of the mates that came together were the ones in this prophecy. The more disappointment he felt, the more bitterness and resentment his heart started to hold. During this time, he lost his mate, causing him to start shunning omegas. These feelings and the loss of his mate caused him to somehow think omegas were at fault for the prophecy not being fulfilled yet. He started by assigning them to all the chores rather than letting them do things they wanted or do the same things as alphas. He was so filled with resentment that he told his pack omegas they could no longer look for their destined mates. They now were for all the alphas and had to do whatever the alphas wanted.

The alphas thought this made them the best of all the secondary genders, causing them to develop a big ego with an arrogant attitude, harming members of their own pack because they felt they were in the right. Thus, the negativity and the wars of the world were kicked up a notch, causing the world to start to spiral and burn. But here we are, a century later, trying to right the wrongs of an arrogant, bitter, heartbroken asshole who thought he was entitled to his pack having power and glory all because one of their elders had a dream. I huff, causing Scorpius to look up at me and ask what’s wrong. I put a paper in the book and closed it, looking up at him, “This whole prophecy apparently started with someone having a dream, and the world went to shit when the alpha of that pack felt entitled to the prophecy’s power because of it.” He scrunched his face, “I don’t understand the mentality of wanting so much power or feeling entitled to it in the first place. Especially over a dream. What kind of power did he assume he’d get from these mates ending up in his pack anyway? It’s not like he’s a part of the mates.”

I nod, opening the book again, continuing from where I left off. As I continue to read, I realize that this dream continued in that bloodline for years upon years. This bloodline became known as “seers” since all they dreamed of was prophecies or events to come. As the dreams developed, more details came to light. The fact that the 4 mates would all have something special about them, but unsure of what that would be. Some predicted it would be sort of like superpowers, while others thought that it would just be a special feature or mark. Being one of the 4, I think that the superpowers theory may be closer to the truth than the feature one. As I continue reading, I can feel my eyes shifting and the electric feeling in my veins as I begin to cry. There is an end to the prophecy that has never been spoken of, and I assume it’s due to the negativity of it. Scorpius gently rubs my arm, “Are you okay, Faye?” I look up at him as the tears flow faster down my cheeks, “No. Did you know the prophecy has another part?” He stares at me, confused, before shaking his head. I swallow thickly, “There is a second portion to it, and I assume it’s never been mentioned because it’s negative.” He gets out of his chair and kneels in front of me, taking the book from me and putting it on the table before holding my hands, “What did it say?” I blink rapidly, trying my best to clear the tears and be strong, “It said, ‘And in the end, 1 mate is lost, to save history from repeating itself. A sacrifice for the greater good. A sacrifice for love. To this mate, we owe everything and are thankful for the rebirth of the world as it should be. To the others, we honor with our lives forevermore.’ It means one of us is going to die, Scorpius, tragically, while the other 3 will be held high as if we are royalty.” I can see the shock in Scorpius’ face as he pulls me into his arms, and I let the sobs rack through my body, thinking of my mates and the fate we will encounter.
