Chapter 47
"Hi, Melvin," Bella waved before sitting beside Charlotte. She pulled her into a hug. "Everything will be fine, okay."
Charlotte nodded. This hug was what she needed.
"What did the doctor say?" She asked. "Is there anything we need to take note of?"
Charlotte shook her head. "I don't know."
Bella stared at Melvin. "Did the doctor say anything?"
"We need to do an ultrasound to know more," he answered.
Bella nodded. "Do you want to do that?"
Charlotte sat up. Maybe she should do it. That shouldn't stop her from making her decision.
"I will do it."
Melvin was happy. He stood up. "I will go speak to the doctor."
He returned a few minutes later and asked Charlotte to come with him.
"I will be here waiting," Bella said, and Charlotte nodded.
Charlotte and Melvin returned to the doctor's office. He spoke to them for a few minutes before the ultrasound was carried out.
"Every vital sound is normal," he said. "And you're carrying twins."
"T-twins?" Melvin asked.
"Yes, twins."
Melvin stared at Charlotte's face to see her reaction, but she had no reaction; her face was blank.
The doctor finished attending to them, wrote down some drugs, and asked Melvin to get them.
"She can wait for you in my office," he told Melvin.
Melvin stared at Charlotte, and she nodded. "It's fine."
After Melvin left, the doctor spoke to her.
"You don't look happy. Don't you want the pregnancy?"
Charlotte shook her head. "I do. It's just that there is a lot of work at the company right now. I don't know how I'm going to pull that through without hurting myself or the babies."
The doctor nodded. "I understand. But with a twin pregnancy, we’ll need to be a little more careful. Twin pregnancies carry a higher risk of complications, but that doesn’t mean something will go wrong, but it does mean you’ll need more rest and closer monitoring than someone carrying a single baby.”
Charlotte sighed. "I won't be able to work, will I?"
"Of course you can," the doctor answered. "But you just need to avoid overworking yourself and keep up with your appointments. And if there is a need for you to stop working, that would be communicated."
Charlotte nodded. "Thank you."
"You're welcome," the doctor said. Congratulations once again."
Melvin showed up a few minutes later, and they left the office. Bella was outside waiting. She stood up, moving close to them.
"How is it?"
Charlotte smiled. "It's twins."
Bella blinked. "Twins? T-that..." She stared at Charlotte. "Do you want to keep them?"
Charlotte nodded. She had made up her mind.
"I will."
Bella smiled and hugged Charlotte. "Congratulations, my darling."
"Take me home," she told Bella.
"We are leaving," Bella said to Melvin, who had been standing and staring at them.
He nodded. "I will drop by at the old house to pick up Liam."
Charlotte nodded. "See you at home."
She left with Bella. When they got to the car, Bella spoke up.
"What's going on between you two?"
"Nothing. Why did you ask?"
"The atmosphere between you two was awkward. Did something happen?"
Charlotte shook her head. "Maybe he is scared I won't keep the babies."
Bella nodded. "I think you should speak to him since you've decided to keep them."
Charlotte nodded. "I think I will."
Bella drove the car, and they were soon at Charlotte's home. They left the car and headed to the living room.
"Welcome, ma'am," Mrs Helen greeted. "Good morning, Miss Bella."
"Good morning, Helen," Bella answered.
"How are you?" Charlotte asked. "Thank you for taking care of the house while we were away." Helen smiled. "It's my job."
Bella and Charlotte went upstairs to Charlotte's room.
"How about your work?" Charlotte asked. "Are you done with them?"
"Yes, I was about to send them out when you called."
"How are you going to send them out now?"
"I already called Audrey," Bella said. "She would send them out. You don't have to worry about that. Have you called Stella or Gina? You need to let them know you're not going to the company today."
"I was actually thinking of going, though," Charlotte answered.
"You can't do that," Bella said. "Did you not tell me you ran a temperature all through the night? I think what you need now is rest. A few days of rest."
"And my work?"
Bella smiled. "Don't you have me here?"
"But you also have your work to..."
"Come on," Bella said. "If these batches are sent out today, I will be free for the next couple of weeks. And no matter how busy I am, I can't be too busy to help you out."
Charlotte smiled. "Thank you."
"You're welcome. Have you spoken to Mia and Jade? Should I call them?"
"Please do," Charlotte answered. "Let them come over. I don't want to share the good news on the phone."
Bella nodded and then placed a call to Mia. She picked up after the first ring.
"Hi, Bella. What's going on?"
"Can you come over to Charlotte's place? What about Jade?"
"She went to her uncle's place with her brother. Is there a problem?"
"No, there isn't. You're coming, right?"
"Of course, I will. I will bring Liam with me."
"That won't be necessary," Charlotte answered. "His father will be there to pick him up."
"Good. I will just get dressed and come over. Bye."
The call ended, and Bella dropped her phone on the table.
"Do you want anything? Have you eaten?"
Charlotte smiled. "I don't have an appetite. I feel sleepy, though."
"You can sleep. I will speak to Stella and Gina."
Charlotte nodded. "Thank you."
She lay down on the bed and pointed at the couch. "My phone is over there."
Bella stood up to get the phone. She called Stella first and spoke to her for a few minutes, informing her Charlotte would be away from work for a few days.
"You call me directly," she told her. "Speak to Gina too. Anything concerning work should be directed to me. If there is anything that needs her attention, I will speak to her."
"Okay, ma'am," Stella answered.
"I will still call Gina, though. But I want you to speak to her about it."
"I will," Stella answered.
"Are there any documents that need to be signed?"
"A few of them. I already sent them to her email."
"I will go through them and let her sign those that are ready."
"Okay, ma'am."
"I won't be coming to the office today because I need to take care of her, but tomorrow, I will be there."
"Okay, ma'am."
The call ended, and Bella went ahead to call Gina. She explained a few things to her before ending the call.
She stared at Charlotte, who was sleeping peacefully. Bella picked up Charlotte's laptop for work and opened it.
"Charlotte," she called.
She needed her password. Charlotte opened her eyes.
"Your password," Bella said. "Stella sent you some documents. I will go through them."
Charlotte nodded and told Bella the password before going back to sleep. Bella input the password, had access, and began to work.
