Chapter 46 Faking Forever
Chapter 46 Faking Forever
BREE’S POV:
Seeing the pain in Barth’s eyes felt like a mirror of mine but his runs deeper than mine but one truth can’t be denied—We have both been betrayed by the ones we loved.
Even though he tried to show me he was okay, I could see it. He was shattered. As the car paused at the gate before entering, I knew I shouldn’t be here. He needed me, and I needed him too.
“Bree, would you like to have ice cream with me before bed?” Mom said, staring at me with expectant eyes as we stepped into the house.
That question brought past memories rushing back.
Back then in Brooklyn, mom, dad and I would usually have ice cream before bed. It was like a bad habit we developed when I would usually sneak out of bed to swallow a few scoops and dad would always catch me and mum would run down and at the end of their scolding, we would sit down to enjoy the ice cream while laughing and playing.
Thinking about it right now fills me with so much disgust and hate for my mother. She had destroyed that happiness!
“No, I’m tired,” I responded coldly, hurrying upstairs without waiting for a response.
Whether she would feel bad or not, I don’t care at all.
…
It wasn’t too late so I ordered an uber. I knew how to drive but I didn’t want to answer questions from anyone. I entered the car and within a few minutes, I was in front of Barth’s penthouse.
The whole neighborhood was as silent as a graveyard. Bracing myself, I pressed the doorbell and waited.
No one came.
My brows furrowed and I pressed again.
Same thing.
I looked around, the chilling wind seeped into my rather light clothing as I shivered. He said he was going to celebrate with his friends, maybe he wasn’t around or he didn’t just want to see me.
As I turned to leave, the door creaked open slowly making me turn back. Two grey-reddish eyes stared back at me and I rubbed my arms.
“I… came here to check up on you.”
A throaty sigh came from him and he pushed the door open, making space for me to come in. I stepped into the house and stared at him as he turned around.
He looked like a mess.
His always well groomed hair was dishevealed, scattered all over his face. He wasn’t dressed at all wearing only black shorts. The heat in the penthouse coupled with the heat from his body made my face flush red.
“What are you doing here, Yvonne?” He asked softly, taking my gaze back to his face as he stared at me coldly.
I pursed my lips before saying. “I told you. I wanted to come check up on you and see how you were doing.”
He raised his arms ajar and gave a sarcastic smile.
“As you can see, Yvonne. I am fine. I’m not a child that you should feel obligated to babysit.”
“Babysit?” My brows shot up in annoyance. “You think I feel obligated to baby sit you and that’s why I’m here?”
“Isn’t it?” He snapped.
My shoulders straightened up as I stared back at him. If he was trying to push me away, then that’s not happening at all.
“If you are trying to make me leave then, you would have to try much harder.”
Barth raised a slight brow at my statement and his posture relaxed a bit.
“Suit yourself then,” he said, walking away from me deeper into the house.
“Would you like some ice cream?” I ask.
“Huh?” He turns around, confused.
“Would you like some ice cream?” I repeated.
Barth gave out a small, genuine laugh. “What do you think we are, Yvonne? Four year olds?”
“I take ice cream when I’m pissed at something. And who knows, it could help calm your nerves down a bit.”
I strided towards the kitchen and opened the fridge. Surprisingly, there’s an unopened bowl of vanilla flavoured ice cream in the fridge.
I bring it out and frown. “Thought you said ice creams are for four year olds?”
Barth shrugs as he takes a few steps towards me. “It’s not for me.”
My face falls.
Perhaps, it’s Tan’s.
As if reading my mind, he says. “It’s not hers as well."
I nod, feeling a weight leaving my shoulders. “Whoever it is for, I hope they don’t mind that we take out of it.”
Barth doesn’t respond.
I take the bowl back to the living room and sit down in front of the television and turn it on. Barth looks at me puzzled.
I tap the empty space on the floor beside me.
“Come sit. We are going to watch a movie together. Sounds fun right?” I smile then shift my gaze back to the television as I swipe through the movies on Netflix.
I settled on a movie titled ‘Faking Forever’. Barth reluctantly takes the space beside me and I place the bowl in our middle.
The acting makes both of us cringe for a second but the kissing scenes were surprisingly not terrible. It’s about a fake dating college romcom where a grumpy hockey captain pretends to date a straight A student just to repair his reputation after his scandal.
“You and the hockey captain have no differences,” I say, chugging down a spoonful of the ice cream as I laugh, avoiding his gaze.
“What do you mean?” Barth questioned, annoyed. “I can act even better than this!”
“I’m not talking about the acting,” I reply, finally turning to look at him. “He also changes excellence just like you are but he doesn’t care about us and not even him. He carries scars just like you do.”
That seems to have touched him deep but he takes a spoon of the ice cream and swallows, his eyes shakily moving back to the movie.
But this time, neither of us could focus on it.
“I had waited for her at the gates day and night thinking she would come back for me,” he began, the look on his face was sour. “But she never did.”
