Chapter 42 The Convergence
Chapter 42 The World After the Shatter
(Eveline Shore — First-Person POV)
The world did not fall apart all at once.
It peeled.
Layer by layer, like glass turning to liquid.
Colors bled into each other. Sound stretched thin. My own heartbeat felt like it echoed through a hundred different versions of me—scattered, splintered, trying to gather themselves into something human again.
And through it all, a single point of heat anchored me to reality.
Jonas’s hand.
His grip was bruising. Desperate. Alive.
I clung back with everything I had, nails digging into his skin, terrified that if I loosened even for a second, the void would remember me and swallow me whole.
The light around us snapped, crackled—
Then reality slammed back together like a snapped bone.
I hit stone.
Hard.
Air punched from my lungs. My vision swam, colors twisting into shapes I knew but couldn’t recognize. My hearing returned in pulses—first distant, then painfully sharp.
“Eveline—Eveline, look at me.”
Jonas’s voice.
Real.
Not an echo. Not a shadow. Not a dream.
I blinked rapidly, trying to force the world to settle.
He knelt over me, his face tight with fear, his thumb brushing ice chips from my cheek. There were cuts along his jaw. Frost clung to his eyelashes. His chest heaved like he’d sprinted through fire.
His hand cupped the back of my head.
“You’re alright,” he breathed, even though his voice shook. “You’re here. Stay with me.”
I tried to respond, but the world pitched sideways.
Darkness flickered in the corner of my eye—quick, sharp, like a predator ducking out of sight.
My stomach lurched.
“Jonas…”
He followed my gaze instantly, shoulders snapping tense.
Nothing was there.
Not anymore.
But something had been.
He knew it. I knew it.
He pressed his forehead to mine, grounding me.
“I’ve got you,” he whispered.
But a cold truth slithered through my spine:
The Watcher was not gone.
It had been interrupted.
Not defeated.
My throat tightened painfully.
“The souls…” I whispered. “I almost fell into them—Jonas, I felt them—so many—”
His jaw locked. “I know. I know.”
My hands trembled violently. He stroked his thumb across my knuckles, steadying them.
“That thing,” I choked. “It said I would become the breach.”
Jonas’s entire body went rigid.
He didn’t speak.
Not right away.
Not until he steadied himself—slow, controlled—the way someone does when they’re trying to hide that they already knew.
“Eveline,” he murmured, “listen to me. Nothing it said defines you. Nothing it wants is going to happen. I’m not letting it take you.”
“You don’t understand—”
“I do.” His voice hardened. “More than you think.”
Before I could ask what he meant, the chamber groaned.
A long, low sound that shivered through the stone like something ancient waking up again.
Jonas moved immediately, positioning himself between me and the far wall.
“Get up,” he said softly. “We need to move.”
I pushed myself onto my elbows—
—and froze.
The floor beneath me was cracked.
Not broken.
Cracked like a mirror hit by a single drop of water.
Threads of black spread from where I’d landed, veins of shadow pulsing faintly, almost alive.
Jonas saw my expression and grabbed my arm.
“Don’t touch it.”
“I didn’t do this,” I whispered.
His silence was the kind that meant he wasn’t sure.
A cold dread settled in my chest.
“Jonas… did I cause this?”
He crouched in front of me, gripping both sides of my face gently but firmly.
“Eveline. Look at me.”
I did.
Even though I was scared to.
“You are not the breach,” he said. “You are not what it wants you to believe. You are not what it tried to make you.”
“But—”
“No.”
He lifted my chin.
“This crack? This place? This darkness? All of it is reacting to what the Watcher did to you. Not the other way around.”
My throat tightened.
“Then why did it say I was the key?”
His eyes softened with something like pain.
“That,” he said quietly, “is what we have to find out.”
A sharp sound cut through the chamber.
Not a groan.
Not a whisper.
A voice.
My voice.
Right behind me.
“Jonas…”
He lunged, pulling me into his chest as a shadow rippled up the nearest wall—tall, twisting, wrong. A perfect distortion of my silhouette, but stretched, hollow, whispering my name in a tone that was almost pleading.
Almost.
Until it smiled.
Jonas shoved me behind him and drew his blade in a single fluid motion.
The shadow’s head tilted.
“Why do you protect her?” it whispered. “When you know what she will become?”
My heart hammered.
Jonas stepped forward.
“Touch her,” he said quietly, “and I end you.”
The shadow laughed—a sound like cracking ice.
“There is no ending me. I am already inside her.”
My lungs stopped working.
Jonas moved—
fast, lethal, furious—
but the shadow dissolved before he reached it.
Gone.
No trace.
No echo.
Only the cold left behind.
Jonas kept his stance, scanning the chamber, breathing hard, blade raised.
I pushed myself onto shaking feet.
“Jonas…” My voice trembled. “It wasn’t lying.”
He spun to me, eyes burning.
“It was.”
“It said—”
“It was lying.”
“It said it’s inside me—”
“And I am telling you,” he said fiercely, gripping my shoulders, “we are not letting that become true.”
I swallowed hard.
His conviction was a lifeline.
But deep in my bones…
In the place the Watcher had touched…
I felt something—
A pulse.
Soft.
Slow.
Wrong.
Jonas saw the flicker of panic in my eyes.
He drew me into his arms.
“Eveline,” he whispered against my hair, “you are not alone in this.”
And for the first time since the void split open beneath me—
I believed him.
Or tried to.
Because just as I began to steady myself—
A new sound echoed through the chamber.
A breath.
Not mine.
Not Jonas’s.
A third.
Human.
Weak.
Familiar.
“Jonas…” I whispered, heart stopping. “Do you hear that?”
He turned.
Blade raised.
Muscles tense.
Listening.
The breath came again—
wet, trembling, desperate.
From the cracked floor.
From inside it.
Jonas cursed under his breath. “No. No—Eveline, stay back—”
But I was already moving.
Drawn.
Terrified.
Hopeful.
Because the voice that rose from the fractures was barely a whisper—
but it was one I had heard a thousand times in my dreams.
“Eveline… please… help me…”
Silas.
Alive.
Here.
Beneath us.
Jonas grabbed my arm too late.
The cracks widened—
light burst through—
and a pale hand reached up toward me through the broken stone.
Silas’s hand.
And I—
I reached back.
