Harper soon felt some relief from the discomfort.
She quickly left the strange atmosphere of the living room and returned to the bedroom.
Looking at her still-flushed face in the mirror, Harper felt a bit annoyed.
Before she could react, she had followed Joseph out in such revealing outfit, and they were so intimateduring the medication.
At that point, she was practically undressed, wasn't she? In the end, he even touched her!
Although Harper knew Joseph was just trying to support her, her face grew even warmer.
She took a deep breath, feeling that after all these years, she still couldn't resist Joseph, which was embarrassing.
'Wake up, Harper. He was just acting on his instincts as a doctor. Maybe he treats other patients better than he treats you,' she thought.
Harper squeezed her hand, put on a robe, and walked out of the room.
Joseph was still sitting on the sofa.
Harper's complexion had visibly improved, so he didn't ask anything further.
Harper slowly sat down not far from him, still not daring to meet his eyes.
She whispered, "Thank you just now."
"It's nothing." Joseph casually flipped through a magazine and added, "By the way, your medicine arrived. I put it in the drawer."
His tone was indifferent as if he didn't care about it at all.
It was as if he would help with anything, whether it was Harper's allergy or an injured stray cat.
This thought weighed heavily on Harper's heart.
She pondered for a while and finally spoke, "Shall we go ahead and get the divorce papers sorted out?"
Harper paused and looked at him. "I happen to be free next Tuesday. How about that day?"
Her tone was calm, without a hint of unhappiness or coercion.
Joseph's hand holding the magazine paused, and the next moment, he took out his phone and checked the calendar.
Next Tuesday, April 28th.
"Okay."
His cold voice seemed to strike Harper's heart, causing a sharp pain.
Joseph didn't respond with a dismissive "as you wish" like last time. Instead, he agreed straightforwardly, and his expression seemed to be open to negotiation.
As she expected, he also wanted to end this marriage.
In the past, he just felt bound by responsibility and naturally couldn't take the initiative to say it.
Harper understood.
Joseph was a responsible and promise-keeping person.
Indeed, if Harper didn't speak up, he was planning to live his whole life according to his mentor's expectations.
But he didn't expect that the one who couldn't bear it anymore would be her.
For a while, the two fell silent, and Harper went back to rest.
It wasn't until late at night that she was awakened by the sound of the door locking from outside. Joseph had gone out.
The remaining half of the night, Harper tossed and turned, finding it hard to sleep.
The bar was filled with a lively atmosphere, and Eric Baker was particularly noticeable in the center of the dance floor, with a beautiful woman in his arm.
He turned his head and saw Joseph sitting in a booth, so he whispered something to the woman and then made his way through the crowd.
"Dr. Lucas, what a rare guest!"
Joseph looked at the lipstick smudge on his collar with some disdain and poured himself a drink.
Eric put his arm around Joseph's shoulder, and his hand naturally moved to clink their glasses together. "Long time no see. Can't you give your buddy a better face?"
Joseph frowned, thinking of the two women he had just been with, and said coldly, "Get your hands off me."
Eric wasn't angry and even chuckled, actually moving his hand away a bit. "What made you think of inviting me out for a drink? Are you trying to drown your sorrows?"
Joseph was a total workaholic, so it was a rare occasion for him to initiate a meeting.
The man gave him a faint glance, didn't say anything, and raised his hand to take another sip of his drink.
"Oh my god!" Eric's eyes widened in disbelief. "Are you also troubled by love?"
Joseph had already downed three glasses of wine, which was not something a normal person would do.
The man remained silent, clearly indicating his agreement.
Eric was full of curiosity and kept staring at the man who was drinking with his head down.
Joseph gave him a cool look and said sharply, "Is there something wrong with you? Shall I take a look?"
"Don't be angry," Eric said, filling his cup. "Come on, tell me, what's going on? Is it because your sweetheart Olivia has come back?"
Eric was always well-informed, and he naturally knew about Olivia's return.
Joseph's actions paused, and he glanced at Eric but didn't say anything.
He took another sip of his drink, and the prominent Adam's apple rolled up and down. The two buttons on his pure black shirt were undone, making him dazzling in the crowd.
The two girls nearby couldn't take their eyes off him.
Eric muttered under his breath, "Are you here to show off in front of girls?"
And Joseph's deep eyes couldn't reveal any emotions, and he suddenly said, "I’m getting a divorce."
Eric's mouthful of wine sprayed out.
A divorce?
Oh!
It took Eric a while to react. Joseph was indeed married to Harper, although they didn't have a wedding and few people knew about it.
But at least it was legally stamped in the court, legitimate and reasonable.
Although he also felt that Harper, who was young and inexperienced, was nothing more than a little sister in his eyes.
She was indeed not very suitable for Joseph, a mature man with a strong sense of abstinence.
Most importantly, the two had no feelings. Joseph had been married for several years yet he hardly ever mentioned Harper, which often made Eric forget that Joseph was married.
He remembered that the two got married in the first place because Joseph wanted to repay a favor, right? So what happened now?
Eric's suspicious gaze swept Joseph's face, and he saw that he was indeed a little melancholic, which surprised him. "So, are you drinking like this for Harper?"
"It shouldn't be." Eric shook his head. "You couldn't have fallen for Harper, could you?"
Joseph looked up, his gaze coldly fixed on him.
Eric quickly forced a smile. "I'm just kidding. I know you don't."
Olivia and Joseph were a well-known couple in medical school.
If it weren't for Olivia suddenly going abroad, the two of them might have had children by now.
And Joseph was not the kind of person who easily changes his mind. Now that Olivia was back, the two of them should be getting back together.
It seemed that Joseph's actions today were out of guilt.
After all, Harper was not bad.
She was innocent and lovely, like an innocent little white rabbit.
Eric smiled again, a bit tipsy, and said carelessly, "Harper's so cute. If you don't like Harper, I can go for her! Or when you get divorced, I'll pursue her, so she won't be alone and sad."
Joseph swayed the drink in his hand, the light refracted on the glass, reflecting in his deep eyes.
For a moment, he said, "She's not for you."
