Chapter 280 Choice
Chapter 280 Choice
After reading it, Alice's eyes welled up. The entire truth was now laid bare before her.
Sidney sensed something was wrong and quickly asked, "What was in that package?"
"The truth from back then. Combined with what I already have, the picture is complete now."
Alice's voice was low. She had all the evidence she needed.
"Now that we have everything, we can request his arrest. Why should Byron walk free after all these years? He needs to pay for what he's done!"
Sidney looked worried. "The situation online is still exploding. What if Byron goes into hiding and doesn't dare show his face?"
Alice's eyes were cold as steel, her tone decisive. "He won't. He'll definitely come see me, because he's too arrogant."
Byron had always thought he was smarter than everyone else, convinced she'd never uncover the truth. But he was also paranoid, terrified she actually had evidence.
He had no idea that today would be his last day of freedom.
Alice touched the button on her shirt, where a tiny red light was blinking.
She made a call. No one answered the first time. The second was picked up just before it went to voicemail, and a threatening voice immediately came through. "Are you trying to get yourself killed? Alice, you think that evidence can bring me down? Dream on! Even without those two idiots, I'm still on top of the food chain!"
Hearing that voice, Alice felt a wave of hatred wash over her.
"Byron, let's bet on whether you dare to meet me. I'll be waiting at the café with all the evidence."
Alice hung up immediately.
Sidney looked puzzled. "Hanging up so fast—aren't you afraid he won't come?"
"He'll come." Alice's tone was certain. Byron was paranoid to his core. He would definitely come in person to confirm exactly what she had.
Alice arrived at the café. Undercover officers had already positioned themselves as regular customers, scattered throughout the space.
Half an hour passed, and still no one pushed through the door.
Sidney started to worry, but Alice remained calm, watching the street outside.
The bell above the entrance suddenly chimed.
A man pushed through the door, his hand still wrapped in bandages.
Byron walked over and sat across from Alice. "Alice, what do you want? What evidence do you have!"
Alice's gaze locked onto him. Seeing him sit across from her, the corners of her lips curved slightly. "You came after all."
Byron immediately sensed something was off. Alice was too calm, that stillness carrying a deep hatred that sent a chill down his spine.
He slammed both hands on the table, his voice suddenly rising. "Speak! Where's the evidence! You think you can send me to prison with those things? Don't be naive!"
"Recognize this?" Alice tossed the black pill in her hand onto the table in front of him.
Byron's expression changed instantly.
He knew this pill all too well. This was a sample from that batch of cancer-causing drugs from back then!
"Where did you get this?"
Alice's voice was ice-cold, barely suppressing her fury. "Mr. Reyes, at this point, you still want to play dumb?"
Byron stared at her, as if suddenly seeing the full picture, his tone turning heavy. "I underestimated you, Alice. You've uncovered the truth from back then, haven't you? But so many years have passed—where did you get the evidence? Even if you know some inside information, so what? Where's the proof?"
Alice looked him straight in the eye, the hatred in her gaze practically spilling over.
"So you admit it was you and the other two families who destroyed mine back then. Byron, you'll pay the price someday!"
"Price? But the fact is, I'm still living the good life, while your adoptive mother and your brother are already six feet under."
Alice slammed both hands on the table. "Byron, do you really think you can dodge the law forever?"
A twisted satisfaction spread across Byron's face. "Yeah, at least right now all you can do is sit there fuming helplessly."
His tone dripped with smugness.
Alice leaned back in her chair, a flash of cold light flickering through her eyes. Hidden in the button on her chest was a miniature livestream camera.
Byron's true face today would be broadcast to the world.
"But you're wrong. You'll pay in full for what you've done."
The moment she finished speaking, several people around the café stood up simultaneously.
Byron realized something was wrong and tried to bolt.
Sidney rushed out from behind and blocked him. "Mr. Reyes, where exactly do you think you're going?"
Within seconds, police had surrounded him. A middle-aged officer pulled out his badge. "Police. You're suspected of drug trafficking and monopolistic practices. You need to come with us."
Byron's expression cycled through several emotions, but then he suddenly threw his head back and laughed.
"Alice, you think arresting me ends everything? The Reyes family still has power! It won't be long before I'm out! And then you're dead!"
Alice looked up at him and tapped her own temple.
"Wrong. These aren't the people you've bought off before. They're personnel from the international tribunal. Byron, this time you're done."
Alice stood up and threw her unfinished coffee directly in his face.
The smile on Byron's face froze instantly.
He glared at Alice with pure venom, struggling frantically, trying to shake off the officers. But several of them held him firmly, with a strength that made resistance impossible.
Byron roared. He refused to accept this!
"Let go! Do you know who I am! I'm from the Reyes family!"
"Damn it! Let me go! How much money do you want! I'll give you everything!"
"Who the hell are you people? You think you're worthy! Get lost! Don't touch me!"
Outside the café, a crowd of victims from back then had gathered at some point, having rushed over after watching the livestream.
A rotten egg flew through the crowd and hit Byron square on the head, followed by a second, a third, countless vegetable scraps, stones, and rotten eggs pelting his body.
This man who had once stood at the pinnacle now looked like an abandoned stray dog, covered in filth and disgrace.
Alice watched coldly through the glass window as he was dragged away. The police siren faded into the distance, and the sounds outside gradually died down.
She collapsed back into her chair, her heart still racing.
She hadn't expected that after so many years of investigation, it would finally bear fruit today, with the truth finally exposed for all to see.
For a moment, relief and grief flooded out together.
Sidney handed her a tissue. "Wipe your tears, Alice. You did it..."
Alice raised her hand and realized her face was already streaked with tears.
She wiped them away, but new ones kept flowing uncontrollably.
The bell above the entrance chimed again.
Michael strode in wearing an overcoat, bringing the chill from outside with him.
He didn't say a word, just pulled her into his arms and held her for a long time, his own eyes reddening, his voice thick with emotion. "Alice, you did it..."
Alice let out a shaky breath, tears still pooling in her eyes. "Michael, what do I do now? The Hall Group just got started, the research institute is waiting for me... I also want to go back to the old house..."
Michael held her hand, gradually transferring his warmth to her. "Whatever you want to do next, I'll be right there with you."
(The End)
