Chapter 6
My brother froze. “What are you talking about? Why do you have Ivy Graham’s phone?”
“Captain, we’ve located the crime scene. Her phone was found here. You should come down.”
At that, he staggered, mouth opening and closing without a sound.
Jack tugged his sleeve. “Don’t just stand there. Move.”
My brother snapped back to himself and turned to Luna. “Head home first. I’ll come find you.”
Eyes red, she reached for him but didn’t even catch the edge of his jacket.
For the first time, my brother left Luna behind because of me.
Watching his urgent pace, I didn’t know what to feel.
For a second, it was like the brother who doted on me as a kid had come back.
At the scene, an officer handed him my phone.
“Captain, it was down in that corner. Blood everywhere. Looks like the victim was dodging around and the phone got flung.”
At the sight of the pink case, his chest heaved harder.
His hands shook as he typed in his own birthday and, just like that, the phone unlocked.
Jack swallowed, trying to reassure him. “Maybe Ivy dropped it and the victim picked it up.”
My brother stared at him, dazed, then gave the faintest nod.
Jack clapped him on the shoulder. “Stay with me. This is not the time to fold.”
My brother steadied himself and took in the room: blood spatter fanned across the wall, a busted chair, a coil of rope tossed beside it.
Different–sized shoeprints dotted the floor.
I hovered close at his side, even if I was only a ghost now.
Seeing this place again still made me shake.

That night unspooled like a nightmare.
Luna had lured me here, saying my brother was hurt and needed me.
The moment I arrived, someone tied me up.
The man was so strong that no matter how I fought, I couldn’t break free.
Watching me thrash on the floor like a dog, Luna laughed out loud.
“Ivy Graham, from a family of cops, huh? Didn’t think you’d see this day, did you–getting worked over by a murderer’s kids. How’s it feel? Fun enough?”
Her words iced my spine. “Who are you? What do you
want?”
She smiled and tipped her chin toward the man. “Brother–do it.”
He gave a cold laugh. “If we don’t make her suffer, how could we ever repay Officer Colin Graham?”
At my father’s name, my head snapped up. “Are you the Wells siblings?”
