Chapter 35 What We Choose

Chapter 35 What We Choose
Malakai

She never wakes as I carry her.

Nyra’s weight against my chest is warm and real, her head tucked beneath my chin, her breath brushing my throat with each slow inhale. The night parts for us as we move—wolves stepping aside without being told, eyes lowered not in submission, but in reverence.

I pass her room without slowing.
The choice feels instinctive. Necessary.

My chambers are quiet when I enter, lit only by the low glow of the hearth. I lay her gently on the bed, easing her down as if the world itself might bruise her if I’m careless.

I lie beside her, careful to leave space.
My hand finds hers anyway.
Her fingers curl around mine like she knows I’m there, even in sleep.

Stay, Astrael murmurs inside me.
“I will,” I whisper aloud.
I press my lips to her temple, barely there, a promise without demand.
Then I wait.

Nyra

I wake slowly.

The first thing I notice is warmth.
Not the sharp, fleeting warmth of adrenaline or magic—but the steady kind. The kind that stays.

I breathe in, deep and unafraid.
Pine. Clean earth. Lightning before rain.
Malakai.

The realization settles into me gently. I don’t panic. I don’t scramble for memory. I let myself exist in the quiet certainty that wherever I am, I am safe.

This is his room.
That thought should terrify me.
It doesn’t.
I sit up just as the bathroom door opens.

He steps out wrapped in nothing but a towel, water still clinging to his skin, his hair damp and curling at his temples. My breath leaves me in a slow, shaky exhale.
He’s breathtaking.

Not just powerful—present. Broad shoulders etched with old scars, arms strong from a lifetime of carrying others through storms. He looks like something that survives because it refuses to fall.

His eyes soften when they meet mine.
“You’re awake,” he says quietly, like the words matter.
I nod. “I didn’t know where you went.”
“I didn’t want to be gone when you woke,” he admits. “But I wanted to come back clean. For you.”

Something inside me loosens at that.
I stand before I can think too hard about it. My legs wobble, but I keep moving, drawn forward by something deeper than want—by trust.
When I reach him, I rise onto my toes and wrap my arms around his neck.
For one heartbeat, he freezes.

Then a low sound rumbles from his chest—satisfied, reverent—and his hands slide to my waist, steadying me like he’s done it a thousand times before.

“Nyra,” he murmurs, forehead resting against mine. “This isn’t something I’ll take. It’s something you give.”
I meet his eyes. “I know.”
“You don’t owe me anything.”
“I want you,” I whisper. “I choose you.”
His breath shudders.
