The Elowen Door

The Elowen Door
"We'll..." he swallowed and approached, shaking himself. "They wouldn't... If they're anything like Tyler, then they're all people from the unincorporated supernatural territories."
"But... the nearest one is in..." She looked up. "Panama?"
Nikolias shook his head. The one in Panama had been dissolved after the supernatural population had been relocated, but seeing as how the vampyr heart sitting on top of the pile inside was about the size of a normal, healthy heart, he had a feeling that incident had helped get these victims here. Nikolias scrubbed at his eyes and pushed off the wall. He held his hand over the chest and yanked it back at the sound of ocean waves and screaming.
"Would you do a full sweep of this floor? I'm..." He swallowed and pressed his hand to his stomach. "I'm going to try and get into the bunker now."
"Are you sure? You look ill."
Nikolias nodded. "The sooner we do, the better."
The better chance they had to get whoever might still be in the house to safety and get them medical help. He went back downstairs toward the kitchen.
A ghostly laugh pulled his mind left toward the dining hall. The grunt of exertion from the kitchen said they'd pulled up the panel, but there was no way to access wherever it led.
He followed the laughter, letting it pull him down the corridor as it drifted in and out of time. He pushed forward as the ground started to rock and his legs shook, melting until he was more staggering than walking. Exhaustion pulled at his shoulder. The walls of his mind cracked and creaked, bending in against the force of all the impressions left in this house.
Where was the entry? If he could just find the entry and get them into it, he could take a break.
"Did you find it?"
"Not here," Nikolias gasped out, steadying himself with a hand on the wall and flinching away as a bloody face flashed through his mind. "I's no' here."
"Kid, are you..."
Nikolias swung around the corner; a woman ran down the long hallway towards a solid stone door, dashing through the moonlight pouring in through the windows.
The windows had been reshaped, and in place of a door was a smooth, plastered wall.
Nikolias snarled, following the woman. This section of the house had been off limits when he'd come, though it was the fastest way to get to the backyard. They'd said it was under construction, but they probably hadn't wanted his mom to accidentally notice the spellwork in the walls.
Bullshit. The woman in the vision fumbled with keys, a gleaming ruby on a chain of glowing stones like the chain that had been on Samuel's ancestor's belt. She pressed it to the wall, again and again, but nothing happened. Nikolias reached the wall, putting his hand to the plaster, searching for a seam.
Mrs. Williams' hissing voice came from behind him. "Useless, thankless boy. What part of stay out of sight didn't you understand?"
Nikolias turned back just as Mrs. Williams dragged Tyler down the hall with a glowing collar around his neck, choking.
"Just wait until they come for you. Hopefully, you'll learn some obedience!"
Tyler collapsed, tearing at the collar, choking as it burned his skin. The collar itself wasn't I.C.S. made or issued. The sharp barbs were more in line with poacher shackles or a vicious dog collar.
Tyler sobbed. "I-I just---I was hungry."
"Monsters don't eat." She pulled the same glowing chain of jewels from her pocket. "If you've ruined Eason's chance, the collar will be the least of your problems."
Nikolias stepped back, watching her line the chain of jewels up with the invisible marks in the plaster. A whooshing hiss followed, and the panel moved aside.
"Did you find something?" He looked back at the enforcer and the police officer who pointedly looked anywhere but at the plaster wall. An afterimage of the police officer escorting him walked out of the wall, adjusting his pants and slicking his hair back with the cursed handprints of a druid on his skin.
Nikolias surged forward, flickering out of existence between one step and the next until he'd gotten in the officer's space.
The man squawked; his hand went to his gun, but Nikolias snatched, cocked, and aimed at his head. He went pale, stone still. The red haze hummed at the edges of his mind, there but not taking over. Instead, a vicious calm took over, dropping his voice into his chest so it rumbled and echoed in the hall.
"Start talking."
"P.I.---"
"Rape is a capital crime within the I.C.S., defined as forcible penetration of any sort against any supernatural, whether they are of an incorporated territory or not, committed within the I.C.S.'s jurisdiction." He jabbed the gun against the man's head. "As a P.I., they won't even give me a slap on the wrist if I blow your brains out for what you've done to the girl downstairs."
The man flinched. "You have no proof---"
"Druid women leave marks that may heal but never fade." Nikolias shoved against his chest with a pulse of magic. A ripple of magic erupted beneath his skin, dragging handprints over his face, his arms, and scratch marks. "You are marked by the earth for your crimes against her children. I could execute you right here."
Not as a P.I., but instinctually he knew he was right.
Fuck. Was he a druid descendant, too? There weren't any druids in the tribe, so it had to be from his dad's mysterious lineage if it were true.
"P.I. Abraham," an enforcer said. "You can't shoot him."
"Hands behind your back."
He bared his teeth but complied. "You'll never get down there. You break in, and it'll kill them all."
The enforcer came up behind the man, locking his hands behind his back. Nikolias dismantled the gun and tossed it before turning back to the wall. He skimmed his hand over the wall until he felt the notches, the subtle dips in a straight line. Nikolias summoned his spear, aiming for the wall and thrusting through the plaster until he hit the wall of enchanted metal. He cut the plaster free and pried it off the wall to reveal the door.
An old stone doorway stood there, burning blue in his vision. The spell circles to the right of the door gleamed with malicious green light.
"Fuck!" Nikolias snarled.
It was just their luck.
"An Elowen door?" The enforcer hissed and turned back. "Call a specialist!"
Elowen doors were designed by the master craftsman called Elowen, originally, for the ultimate protection for families with secrets. The original spellwork required a family member to open the door once every set amount of time. If one was skipped, the moving protocols would start to activate as the door assumed that the family had been compromised. If someone other than the family tried to open it, it would also trigger or alert a family member.
Once triggered, the door would move everything inside to another location, usually a hidden family vault, until a family member came to open it.
