The Kiss That Lingered

Rowan set me down gently, his hands firm on my waist, but he didn’t step away. His grip lingered, his fingers pressing into me as though he were afraid I might vanish if he let go. His gaze bore into mine, intense and unyielding, and for a moment, it felt like time itself had paused, holding its breath for whatever was about to come next.

His eyes caught the dim light of the room, and I swore they seemed to glow—soft at first, a subtle flicker, but then brighter, molten gold swirling with an intensity that made my stomach flutter. I blinked, convinced I was imagining it, but the light in his eyes didn’t fade. If anything, it deepened, sending a ripple of heat through me that pooled low in my belly.

"Anna," he murmured, his voice low and rough, a primal growl straining just beneath the surface. "You don’t know how much I need you tonight. How much I need you."

The way he said it—urgent, raw—sent a shiver through me. My heart hammered in my chest, caught between the thrill of his need and the faintest edge of unease. There was something different about him tonight, something that went beyond the fierce way he held me.

Before I could respond, his lips crashed onto mine, stealing the breath from my lungs. His kiss was no longer gentle or teasing—it was consuming, a firestorm that burned away every coherent thought. My knees wobbled under the sheer force of it, and his hands tightened on my waist, pulling me flush against him as though he couldn’t bear even the smallest distance between us.

His body radiated heat—an almost unnatural warmth that seemed to seep into my skin, setting every nerve alight. I gasped against his mouth, but he didn’t stop. His hand slid to the back of my neck, his fingers tangling in my hair as he tilted my head back to deepen the kiss. His lips devoured mine with a ferocity that left me trembling, his tongue teasing, demanding, leaving no part of me untouched.

"Rowan," I managed to whisper when he finally broke the kiss, his mouth trailing down my jawline. My voice trembled, my breath hitching as he pressed his lips to the sensitive spot just below my ear.

His only response was a low, guttural growl that vibrated against my skin, sending a delicious shiver down my spine. His hands moved over my body with a reverence that felt almost worshipful, yet there was nothing soft about his touch. His palms were rough, his grip possessive, as though he was staking a claim he would never relinquish.

"You’re mine," he growled, his voice deeper now, darker, filled with a hunger that bordered on animalistic.

"Only mine."

His lips trailed lower, brushing over the curve of my shoulder, his breath hot and uneven against my skin. When his teeth scraped over the sensitive dip of my collarbone, I gasped, my hands clutching at his shoulders to steady myself. The sharp edge of his teeth sent a bolt of heat racing through me, and I felt my body arch into him, craving more even as a part of me struggled to process the intensity.

"Rowan!" I exclaimed, my voice trembling as I felt his mouth latch onto my collarbone. He bit down—not hard enough to break the skin, but enough to leave a mark, enough to brand me. My gasp turned into a soft moan, my body responding instinctively to the primal edge of his touch.

He pulled back just enough to meet my gaze, his golden eyes blazing with an intensity that left me breathless. There was no apology in his expression, no hesitation—only raw, unfiltered need.

"Anna," he said, his voice thick and trembling with emotion.

"I can’t stop. I don’t want to stop."

My breath hitched at his words, at the unrelenting fire in his gaze. And then his lips were on me again, trailing hot, open-mouthed kisses down my neck. His hands slid lower, his fingers gripping my hips with enough force to leave bruises. But I didn’t care. The heat of his touch, the way his mouth claimed every inch of my skin—it left me dizzy, lost in the storm of him.

I felt his kisses move lower, his mouth tracing the curve of my shoulder, then down over the swell of my chest. His teeth scraped lightly over my skin, leaving faint marks that stung and tingled in the most delicious way. Every nip, every kiss felt like a claim, like he was branding me as his in a way that left no room for doubt.

"Rowan," I whispered, my voice barely audible as my hands tangled in his hair, pulling him closer. My body trembled beneath him, caught between the overwhelming intensity of his touch and the faintest flicker of unease that I couldn’t quite shake.

When his lips found the curve of my hip, I let out a soft, involuntary moan. His hands gripped my thighs, spreading them slightly as he pressed a hot, lingering kiss to the sensitive skin there. The scrape of his teeth was harder this time, enough to make me cry out softly, my body arching instinctively toward him.

"Mine," he murmured against my skin, his voice guttural, almost unrecognizable. His golden eyes flicked up to meet mine, and the raw, unrelenting possessiveness in them sent a thrill racing through me.

I felt his mouth move lower, his lips and teeth leaving a trail of marks along the inside of my thigh. Each kiss, each nip sent waves of heat and longing coursing through me, building a fire that threatened to consume us both.

My breathing was ragged, my heart pounding as I surrendered to the intensity of him. And yet, amidst the overwhelming passion, a small part of me couldn’t ignore the wildness in his eyes, the way his body trembled as though he was holding back a force far greater than either of us.

"Rowan," I managed to say, my voice shaky, my fingers gripping his shoulders as I tried to ground myself.

"What’s happening to you? What’s... what’s wrong?"

He froze for the briefest moment, his lips hovering just above my skin. When he looked up at me, his golden eyes were filled with an emotion I couldn’t quite name—a mix of fear, need, and something far darker.

"You’re safe with me," he said, his voice rough and low, trembling with barely restrained power.

"Always. But tonight..." His voice broke slightly, and he closed his eyes for a moment as though battling some inner turmoil.

"Tonight, I can’t hide it. I can’t hold it back anymore."

"Hide what?" I asked, my voice trembling as I reached for his face, trying to steady him, to bring him back to me.

But instead of answering, he kissed me again, his lips crashing onto mine with a ferocity that left no room for words. His hands gripped my hips, pulling me closer as his body pressed against mine, his warmth enveloping me completely.

I should have been afraid. I should have been questioning the wildness in his eyes, the feral edge to his touch. But instead, I found myself surrendering to him completely, to the storm of emotions and sensations he unleashed within me.

Whatever was happening, whatever force was threatening to break free, I was his—and in this moment, I wanted nothing more than to lose myself in him.
