Chapter 46 46
I gave the pup a fangy smile and shook my head. “I am a weapon” We stepped out onto the front porch and I ripped a portal to the clearing.
We stepped out of the portal onto a battle field. I took a moment to glance around. Approximately ten vampires and three magics were fighting three werewolves in wolf form. No wait. Four werewolves. Thomas was in a heap on the side of the clearing. From this distance I couldn’t tell if he was alive. The wolves were being smart and doing drive-bys. Run in, bite, release, and run back into the woods and then pop back out at a different point. They were lucky the magic users must be new to powers or poorly taught. The clearing was covered with scorch marks. Obviously they hadn’t learned how to hit a moving target. Too bad for them, I had. I shoved Tristan behind a fallen tree before nailing the closest vamp with a ball of wizard fire in the face. I knelt down beside Tristan to hand him my phone.
“If this goes south, call for backup. Just tell them where we are and that we are in trouble. Then you run as fast as those almost full fledge werewolf legs can for town.” I pointed towards Howling Ridge.
“Ok. One question. Who do I call for backup?” Tristan asked as he carefully put my phone in the inside pocket of his jacket.
“Backup. It’s under B” With that last piece of advice, I jumped over the log and joined the fray. Connor had been laying down cover fire for us.
In rapid succession I took out another vamp and a magic. Connor took out one of the magics and was trading fire with the other. Poorly taught was apparently the answer. She was throwing regular orange fire balls instead of blue wizard fire. Everyone knows in a fight you throw blue. Regular fire can be extinguished with magic or water or stop drop and roll. I gave my partner a nod before diving into the fray.
Getting to Thomas was my priority. I decided simple was the best strategy. With my sward held high, I hacked through anyone that was stupid enough to get between me and him. Half way across the clearing I felt the ripple of magic that meant a portal was opening. I whirled around to see more vamps and magics pouring into the clearing. Shit. This was going to get very ugly. I heard the bark of a 9mm and the first vamp thru the portal was down. Another bark and the second guy thru went down. Way to go K9 unit! If he could keep their reinforcements from coming thru we might just pull this off. I started to turn back towards Thomas only to have a pure white wolf fly thru the air beside me. I spun around to check on her.
“Thanks!” I told her as I walked past her ripping the throat out of the vamp that had been sneaking up on me.
In the middle of the clearing, I heard a voice that seemed to be addressing me.
“Well if it isn’t the great Cole Pearson.” It sneered. I don’t think the owner of the voice thought much of me. But maybe I was just being sensitive. “They will tell the story for years about how I killed you and then slaughtered the town you had vowed to protect.”
I turned to see who my new number one fan was. Of course. Frankie Hays. Mentally crossing my fingers that the pack would protect Thomas and that the boys could handle the others, I took up a fighting stance and made a come and get it motion at the mobster.
He charged with his sword held high. Our swords rang out as I blocked his blow. The clang of metal on metal filled the air as we dueled across the clearing. My form was vastly improved over the last time I dueled in this clearing. It really helped that I wasn’t naked or barefoot. Plus I knew the terrain. Oh how I wished I could just throw a fire ball at him and call it good. But, no, they wanted him alive! There was a spell or two that could take him down, but, his blows were coming in too fast for me to block and work magic at the same time. I had to admit that whoever had taught him to fight with a sword had done their job well. Not as well as a certain Spartan I know though. In a matter of minutes I had him on the defense. I shoved him backwards over a log and he lost his balance. When he landed, his head it the ground with a thud. I took advantage of his momentary distraction to place my left hand on his forehead and work a little magic. In an instant he went nighty night, trapped in a dream world where all of his worst fears had come true. I figured given his past, it was a fitting punishment. Too bad I didn’t have time to stick around to deliver more.
I stood up when I heard someone coming up behind me. I had just started to spin around to deliver a roundhouse kick into their stomach when I felt a shooting hot pain in my ass and heard the bark of a 9mm. Then, once again the grass was racing up to my face. Son of a-.
