Chapter 147 146: Chamber, Choice & Council

Chapter 147 146: Chamber, Choice & Council
The Great Hall shimmered with ancient power.

Towering pillars carved from celestial crystal stretched toward a glowing dome ceiling where constellations slowly moved like living stars. Divine energy filled the vast chamber, humming quietly in the air.

At the far end of the hall stood the Thrones.

Massive seats of power carved from luminous stone, each one radiating the presence of beings far older than the academy itself.

They were known across the realm as the Keepers of Balance, the rulers who watched over the fate of the entire Aetherborn world.

Rows of council members filled the chamber below them.

Elders.

Magisters.

High nobles of every supernatural house.

All of them had gathered to witness the girl who had saved their world.

At the center of the hall stood Seraphine.

Seraphine Emberlain stood calmly despite the overwhelming attention. Her posture was steady, though the divine energy of the chamber pressed heavily against her senses.

She had never felt so many powerful beings in one place before.

One of the Thrones spoke first, their voice echoing through the hall like distant thunder.

"You have done what many believed impossible."

Another continued, their voice softer but no less powerful.

"You faced the Aetherstar and prevailed."

A murmur of approval passed through the gathered council.

"You have proven yourself a true Aetherborn."

Seraphine bowed her head respectfully.

"I only did what needed to be done."

A third Throne leaned slightly forward.

"Humility is a rare trait among those gifted with such power."

The hall fell quiet again.

Then the first Throne spoke once more.

"There is a matter we must discuss with you."

Seraphine looked up.

"You have awakened fully as the Aetherborn."

The voice echoed across the chamber.

"With that awakening comes a choice."

The council listened carefully.

"You may remain within the Aetherborn world and take your place as its protector..."

Another Throne finished the sentence.

"...or you may return to the human world where you once lived."

The words settled heavily in the air.

Seraphine was silent.

For a moment, memories flooded her mind.

The garden. Her mother. The words she had heard in that endless field of flowers. The Aetherborn protects the world. It is our nature.

Seraphine slowly lifted her head.

"I will stay."

A quiet ripple moved through the chamber.

She continued calmly.

"I understand now what being the Aetherborn means. My place is here."

The Thrones exchanged approving glances.

"You choose wisely."

"But," Seraphine added gently, "there is something I ask before I fully take my place here."

The hall grew attentive again.

"I would like to return to the human world one last time."

A few council members murmured softly.

"I left many things unfinished there," Seraphine explained. "There are people and parts of my life I must close properly before I move forward."

The Thrones considered her request.

One of them nodded slowly.

"That is reasonable."

Relief flickered across Seraphine's face.

"But I would also like to bring someone with me."

The chamber quieted again.

"And who would that be?" a Throne asked.

Seraphine answered without hesitation.

"Damien."

The moment the name left her lips, murmurs spread across the hall.

One of the Thrones raised a hand, silencing them.

"You know the law," the Throne said calmly.

"Those born in the Aetherborn world are forbidden from entering the human realm. It disrupts the balance between worlds."

Seraphine nodded.

"I know."

She spoke carefully.

"But Damien is no longer Aetherborn."

The hall stilled.

"He sacrificed his essence to save my life," she continued quietly. "He is no longer a dragon. He no longer carries the power of this world."

She lifted her gaze toward the Thrones.

"He gave up everything for me."

Her voice softened.

"I would like to take him to the human world with me... even if only for a short time."

Seraphine's eyes remained steady. "And to thank him properly."

The Thrones sat in thoughtful silence for several moments.

Finally, one of them spoke. "The boy has indeed lost his essence."

Another Throne nodded slowly. "He no longer belongs fully to this world."

The first Throne turned its gaze back to Seraphine. "Your request is... reasonable."

Seraphine exhaled quietly. "You may return to the human world," the Throne declared. "And Damien may accompany you."

A ripple of surprise moved through the hall.

"But," the Throne added firmly, "this journey must be temporary."

Seraphine straightened.

"You must return soon after."

Another Throne spoke. "The Aetherborn cannot remain away from this realm for long."

Seraphine nodded immediately. "I understand." She bowed respectfully. "I will return."

The Thrones watched her carefully. "Then it is decided."

The hall's energy shifted slightly, as though the world itself had acknowledged the decision.

Seraphine stepped back from the center of the chamber.

Her new life as the Aetherborn had begun.

But before she truly embraced it-

She would return to the human world one last time.

_____
The corridors of Aetherborn Academy had never felt so... different.

As Seraphine Emberlain walked down the long marble hallway, whispers followed her like a soft wave.

Students lined the passageways.

Some stood in small groups, pretending to talk while secretly staring. Others didn't bother pretending at all.

"That's her..."

"The Aetherborn..."

"She defeated the Aetherstar..."

Seraphine felt heat creep up her neck.

She pulled her cloak slightly tighter around herself and kept walking.

This was strange.

Just days ago she had been another student walking these halls. Now people stepped aside as she passed.

A few even bowed their heads respectfully.

This is going to take some getting used to, she thought.

Suddenly, two younger students rushed forward nervously.

"Seraphine!"

She stopped, surprised.

The girl held out a small notebook with trembling hands. "C-could we have your autograph?"

Seraphine blinked. "My... autograph?"

The boy beside the girl nodded eagerly. "You saved the world!"

Seraphine couldn't help laughing softly. "Well... I guess I can do that."

She took the notebook and quickly signed her name.

The two students nearly squealed with excitement. "Thank you!"

More students gathered after that. Some wanted signatures, others simply wanted to say thank you.

Seraphine answered them kindly, smiling despite the strange feeling of being watched by so many people.

Eventually, she managed to slip away and continue walking, she had her Aetherborn powers now, so she could fly without Caleb. She finally reached her destination.

The Four Lodge.

Seraphine heard voices. She stepped inside. Three figures sat near the large fireplace.

Lucien leaned lazily against the arm of a chair, though his usual playful expression seemed slightly dimmer than usual.

Across from him stood Alaric, arms crossed, crimson eyes thoughtful.

And beside the window stood Kade, staring outside with a distant expression.

Lucien noticed her first. "Well, well..." He stood up slowly."Look who finally woke up."

All three of them turned toward her.

For a moment no one spoke.

Then Kade exhaled and ran a hand through his hair. "You're alive."

Seraphine smiled faintly. "Last time I checked."

Alaric stepped forward slightly, studying her carefully. "You recovered quickly."

"The healers helped," she replied.

Lucien tilted his head. "And saving the entire world probably gives a person a bit of motivation to survive."

Seraphine rolled her eyes lightly. "Please don't start that again."

For a moment the mood felt almost normal.

Then she noticed something.

She looked around the room.

"Where's Damien?"

The question hung in the air.

Kade's expression tightened slightly.

Lucien glanced at Alaric.

Alaric finally answered.

"He left earlier."

Seraphine frowned.

"Left? Where?"

Kade turned away from the window slowly. "His father summoned him."

Seraphine's heart sank. "When?"

"This morning." Lucien sighed quietly. "When the Dragon Court heard what Damien did..."

Alaric finished the sentence calmly. "They were not pleased."

Seraphine's stomach twisted.

"He gave up his essence," she said softly.

"Yes," Alaric replied.

"And in doing so, he gave up his claim to the throne."

Kade folded his arms. "For a dragon royal family, that's not something they take lightly."

Lucien's usual humor was gone now. "It sounds like his father intends to make an example of him."

Seraphine felt a cold knot form in her chest. "An example?"

Alaric met her gaze. "He may be disowned."

The words landed like a heavy stone.

Seraphine stood there silently.

Damien had given up everything.

His power. His identity. His future.

All to save her.

And now his own family was preparing to cast him aside.

Seraphine clenched her fists slightly. "Where did he g
o?" she asked.

Kade shook his head.

"The Dragon Court summoned him directly. None of us was allowed to go."

Lucien watched her carefully.

"But knowing dragon politics..."

He sighed.

"This won't end kindly."

Seraphine's expression hardened with quiet determination.

She had already decided she was going to the human world.

And now-

She had even more reason to bring Damien with her.

Because right now...

He might need someone on his side more than ever.
