Chapter 39: Battle of The Wise

If there was a way Lacey could strike him across the cheek, she would, " I didn't say anything, sir." She spat.

" I thought as much because..."

Wasn't he tired of carrying his ego? Lacey wondered. It was even more annoying to her that he'd even try to make fun of her. It was bad that he had a lot of money. Sometimes, these things don't fall into the hands of people who will utilize it well.

" Okay, so now that we've gotten that out of the way. What other way can I welcome you to the office without offering you a drink?" He asked and Lacey shook her head immediately.

Was he trying to get her drunk on her first day at work?" She wondered, "I don't think that's proper." She said, she had intended to say wise but thought that he could pick an offense to her statement.

" Good to see that you are very eager to work." He replied instead, obviously messing with her and she rolled her eyes. Thank God she was wearing her glasses today and her frame was very thick. She was sure that he wouldn't be able to see through it.

"Yes sir."

He shot Lacey a long stare as he tried to figure out what she was thinking, he ruled the city but he saw that she was proving stubborn, her boss had confirmed that she wasn't an easy lay but he was determined to see through till the end. It was that commendation that spurred him on." I can see why your boss was reluctant to let you go. I want you to work for me.

" I'm sorry I can't do that." Lacey replied without giving a second thought. It was as if it was in her default setting. Even if she woke up from the dream, she would still say no.

Alistair felt stung by her rejection, no one had rejected him point blank, "Okay, but I don't think you really have a choice because as it stands, one of these days you might be switched here and I'm sure you wouldn't mind. All of these responses are for the gram, to show your boss that you are very loyal, which I don't think he would mind anyway as long as I tip him."

Lacey sighed in frustration, now she was getting the reason he behaved the way he did because he wanted to prove his status and she tried to figure out what went wrong in his upbringing. She had read somewhere that most of the narcissists were raised in abusive homes , maybe he was one of them. If he was, then he was supposed to go for therapy and not stay here busy flexing his powerful muscles but the problem was if he was going to listen.

Now she was thankful that she didn't marry someone with such character. It would have been a disaster.

' Now you like him?'

There was a difference between liking and being grateful. At least all her years of being married. Aside from Mark being broke, he was a caring man. If other things worked out she wouldn't mind...

She stopped that thought before it could progress and gain a foothold in her mind and made her take an irrational step. She wanted to be sure that he knew what he was doing and not just going about constituting nuisance.

It would be nice if Mark actually found a job, she would have asked Alistair but that was setting herself up for disaster. She even knew that Mark would reject the job the minute she told him who it came from.

" I hope you don't keep spacing out in the next few weeks."

Well, one day was gone and so would the next thirteen days come and go like the cool evening breeze that escaped at the sight of the first morning sun.

" I won't sir. So, what am I supposed to do sir?"

" You'll work in the quality assurance department. I have qualified people but I need extra supervision. They have become acquainted with many fellow workers, hence their jobs are not effective, so you will help to bring them to book." Alistair announced and her phone beeped at the same time.

" Please excuse me sir."

" You are."

She checked through her messages and saw that it was in her email, a foreign email. She opened it slowly and saw that it came from A&M. She looked up to see Alistair smiling.

" Those are the names of the workers, their roles and characters. So you will know how to bring out the best in them." He said.

Lacey stared at the long list of names and wondered how she was supposed to do all of this in the shortest period.

" Basically you are saying that I should do the job of an H.R."

Alistair shrugged nonchalantly, " If you call it that. I prefer the term Q. A officer but to each their own. I expect to see remarkable results in the next few weeks right?" He asked and she stared at him.

Why were bosses often fond of Majin demands when they knew that even they couldn't get the job done?

" I'll try my best sir." She replied, if she complained about time, she was walking into an open trap of risking him telling her to extend her time so she had to be smart about it.

Alistair grinned, she was smart and that was why he was ready to go any length to conquer her. He was waiting for her to complain about the short duration.

Well, that wasn't the end of the world, there were other ways that he could use to draw her in and discard her later.

"I don't think any other person will be able to do this job like you. So I expect results."

" Yes, sir."

" Go to the next door, that's your new office." He said and she walked out of his office. This was a battle of wills and dominance and she was going to win.

Two weeks here I come.
