" I thought so too, it's not everytime that you reject your superiors. sometimes, obedience will get you farther than you can ever imagine, do you understand that?" Alistair said with his eyes gleaming as he enjoyed the scenario before him. He didn't want to have to show her that he was a very powerful person but he wouldn't hesitate to show him his strength.
Lacey stared at the annoying man before her but refused to say anything, if he didn't get out of her face, she might be forced to smack him silly. The only problem was that she was going to be at risk of rotting in jail. He had sick connections and she didn't think that was how she wanted to spend her life in jail.
She looked at her watch and looked at him, " I've spent too much time sir. I would like to return to my job." She said.
" Oh, I was thinking you'd like to spend the day with me." Alistair said.
Lacey almost groaned aloud but she didn't say anything, " I don't know what you want from me Mr. Alistair, you don't expect me to leave my job and follow you around. That's slacking off duty and I don't think that's noteworthy." She said.
"Well it doesn't matter, as long as you can guarantee that you will get another person to do your job. I'm sure your boss will not mind. So why will you be bothered?" Alistair said smugly with a wide smirk on his face which caused her to grow more angry.
"I would rather not play that game sir. I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate it if a worker of yours was busy slacking off instead of doing their duty, it can be annoying sometimes." Lacey replied confidently. She knew what he wanted, and she was ready to play her game to the fullest as long as she got what she wanted but making her slack off because of some special preference was a no no. It didn't speak well about her character as a person and that made her wonder what kind of people he had been dealing with.
Alistair cocked his head, he loved very strong willed women, they were fun to break and he was sure he was going to enjoy doing that to lacey. It was all a matter of time before she gave in. He would wear her out and by the time he's done she would sorely regret ever trying to play hardball with him.
Lacey's eyes narrowed when she saw the expression on his face, it narrowed even more when she saw a familiar figure walking to the front of her building.
" Is that not your broke husband I see?" Alistair inquired in a stunned tone.
" Let me check it out" Lacey ended up saying and he stared at her before nodding.
What the hell are you doing here Mark?' Lacey muttered below her breath as she approached him. Was he trying to embarrass her? What did he intend to get from it?
With an angry look she marched to the gate, intercepting him before he entered her company, " Mark!" She called and he halted in his steps before staring at her.
Her face was impassive, an angry look lurking in the depths of her eyes as she tried to understand what was going on and Mark smiled at her.
" Hey, babe. I came to see you."
Lacey almost jumped out of her skin at the term of endearment. What the hell, Mark?
" Are you trying to embarrass me? Is this what this is about?" She inquired as she took another route aware of the pairs of curious eyes staring at both of them expecting to get a scoop of their family gist.
Heck! What was she even saying about family gist? She was going to dump his sorry ass soon.
Luckily Mark got the memo and followed her lead away from the company gate.
" I thought you'd be on duty." He said as he got closer to her.
" I know right?" She replied instead, and stared at him with her arms crossed over each other. " What the hell are you doing here, Mark?" She repeated the question that raged in her mind.
Mark shrugged, " I'm sorry if I didn't call you before coming, I might have... wanted to surprise you..." He said with a sheepish smile and Lacey's eyes almost bulged out of her eyes.
" Stop that, right now. Didn't we stay in the same house overnight? So what's this you're doing? Are you just set to embarrass me?" Her eyes raked down his figure and she groaned, "See the clothes you wore, does this look like something that befits my husband's caliber?" She queried him.
Mark looked down at himself, he wasn't looking bad in fact he even thought that he looked cute, it was just a polo and a corduroy trouser. It wasn't as bad as she painted it.
" I look good...I... I just wanted to come surprise you, I cooked for you"
" I can assure you that you have done more harm than good. You will subject me to mockery at work and everyone will start talking about how I'm a loser."
Mark winced and she apologized, " I'm sorry, but it's the truth. The rest of my day is going to be filled with snickers and mockery and I don't want that for myself. I already have a lot on my plate. I don't want this as an extra topping." She told him.
Mark sighed, " I'm sorry, I didn't think before coming."
Do you think about anything at all? She thought but offered him a small smile. If she pretended to be a changed woman he would think that his tactics were melting her heart. After the grace period she would still leave and be free with her life.
" Okay," she replied and Mark was taken aback by her cool tone. Everyone knew that she was not that cool.
They suddenly heard a horn and she grimaced before looking back, " is that the godforsaken Alistair?" She asked.
