Chapter Twenty Nine
Chapter Twenty Nine
MRS PAXTON POV
I already requested for the family doctor to come over to the house this morning, I knew it was going to be a really busy day and asking Richard to take her to the hospital was totally out of the equation. Not like he cared about the child to begin with, he didn’t even trust that the child was his and he was definitely going to do anything to sabotage the child’s health. The butler informed me of the arrival of the doctor and I quickly led her into the hallways to find Lena. I heard the sound of music and she was singing so patiently to the sound of it. I gently opened the door and took a peep into it before speaking.
“Hey sunshine, someone looks elated, wanna share your reason with me?” I questioned and she quickly turned down the volume of the music before we fully entered the room
“Amazing morning to you Mrs Paxton, I was just listening to a playlist that was combined for me by the teenage crush and maybe moments like that could make me happy.”
“Oh well I could keep your secret, just don’t let Richard find out, we will both have our heads on a platter.” She laughed and poked her head out to see the doctor who was standing behind me and trying to observe the full space.
“Who’s the lady?”
“Exactly who you think miss, she’s holding a box and I told you I was going to get you checked up today.”
“You just don’t give up on something do you?, oh well I thought we were going to the hospital to do the check up?”
“So you could come up with some ridiculous excuse to stay back at home right?, nah I thought ahead, and it’s just safer for you to be in here after what happened yesterday”
Her happy face turned gloomy with sadness
“Yeah right, I forgot that I wasn’t supposed to do things that I wanted unless he was happy about it.”
“Come on now, we’ve been on a roll, don’t do that thing where you start to ruin the little progress you ae making, I will fix all of this like I told you, it’s just easier than it looks. Now this is doctor Freya, she’s the daughter of the woman that helped me have Richard.”
“Oh, should I be worried?, we don’t want my child turning out like…”
“Enough of all that Lena, I’m on your side okay?, and I don’t want you to meet the nonchalant aspect of me. Everything I do , it’s because I helped you and I got you in this , sort of. So make it easy for me or you could search for help yourself, and I know your family won’t come to your aid so I advice that you watch it and don’t lose the few friends you have in your camp.”
“I’m sorry I was definitely out of it, it’s just a lot to take in and I shouldn’t be doing this when you are rendering so much help. Hi Dr Freya, it’s good to meet you, please note tha I am not a fan of using drugs so if there’s an issue, injections would work better.”Lena explained and smiled
“Oh she is a strong one Mrs Paxton, just like you.”
“You flatter me Freya, I told you we are a lot alike”
“Right, uhm I need you to pick somethings for me from the grocery store, you know I’d run there myself but I can’t currently, sorry to bother you Mrs Paxton.”
“It’s alright Lena, I’d be right downstairs if you need my help or anything so do not hesitate to call alright?, and you should make that list for me before I leave the house”
“Sure will.”
I left them to do their thing while I attended to complaints on my mail. There was supposed to be a meeting with the major stakeholders and board of directors and I needed to make sure that I was buying as much people on my side as possible. I wanted to take power completely away from Richard and I couldn’t do that on my own. If his father had know that he was going to be great trouble for me , then I knew he wouldn’t have given him so much shares or the seat as the main man.
The doctor was finally done and she joined me down the stairs like I had requested. She had a worried expression and I feared something might had gone wrong.
“Well if anything is the matter I suggest you speak up so we can act on it Dr Freya , but your expression facially is getting me scared and I might be your next patient.” I had barely been able to sleep at night while I thought of things that could have gone wrong with the child or even with Lena, and now with Freya’s suspense it was safe to say I was right.
“You need not worry too much Mrs Paxton, the child is still in good condition. Although I was unable to conduct the proper tests on the child and it’s mother due to limited resources, but I have done the little I can. I would advice that her next session should be at the hospital, so we can follow up on everything…”
I was about to respond positively when Richard came in and interrupted the conversation.
“I’m afraid Dr Freya that won’t be possible, my wife would not be leaving this house so I suggest that you find a way to deal with whatever in our space.”
“I beg your finest pardon?” I thundered in anger. I knew that Richard didn’t care about the chile and I knew his reason for wanting to remain right here for all check ups couldn’t be genuine. He hated Freya because when they were teenagers, he did something wrong and Freya told on him to everyone, so he made sure he sought her out endlessly and even tried to ruin her liscense one time.
“Oh well for starters, she’s my wife and I can make descisons for our child cant I?” It was surprising hearing him call it out child. “And secondly, I don’t trust this witch not to make a fuss out of things and even do things that might be harmful to Lena.”
Now it was Freya’s turn to get mad, but she managed to do it with all professionalism still.
“If you really care for your wife the way you sound? Then you’d know it’s best to get her to the hospital frequently to know her health status, and if it’s me you’re worried about, don’t worry, you can drive her down and stay with her during each session, it’s even advisable for fathers to start bonding with the child the same time mothers do.”
“Thank for your beautiful analysis Freya but I stand on my words, Lena would not be leaving this house. Here’s what we are going to do, you would come here on specific set dates and do the checkups, and I don’t mind buying the equipments needed if that means I have my way. Now you will agree to these terms Freya, unless you actually do have ulterior motives.”
She hesitated for a while before sighing in defeat.
“Fine, but I am not doing this for you. I owe Mrs Paxton and also that young girl up there who is subjected to your whims and nonsensical behaviors.”
“Oh I don’t give a fuck who you are doing it for, what matters is the fact that you are doing it alright?”
Freya picked up her things and walked away before I even got the chance to apologize to her. But it was Freya, she had been with my family long enough to know that Richard was that way.
“You really are far from redemption son, I feel sorry for and it might be too late before you finally realize that what you are doing is wrong and life is deeper than all these, your child might even grow up hating you.”
“Oh mum, you’ve done a thousand things to me and you won’t see me hating you now will you?, the child will be fine, it’s not even mine to start with you know. But when I have mine, I know he will adore me.”
“And yet there you were acting like you cared about the chile or even Lena, how pathetic.”
“You know how it is for Freya and I and the last thing i would want to do is lose an argument to her, so I had to do that. You taught me to always win didn’t you?, just like I will at today’s stakeholder meeting, I hope you are ready for that?, because I don’t intend to play fair at all.”
“Then don’t, I will have my hands stained and I will go as low as I can to make sure you leave the company and Lena gets her freedom.”
“I’d love to see you try mum, the meeting is set for 1pm, try not to be late will you?, you never make it in time for anything.”
With that he walked off whistling like the whole world was in his hands and I felt annoyed. I couldn’t believe I birthed that child and he was out to get me, his own mother. I was not going to lose to him, not in this life or ever, so I was going to do what I did best, reach out the contact I had promised myself not to after my husband’s death….”
