Chapter 56 Cornered

Chapter 56 Cornered

Lyra's POV

"RUN!" Kaelen shoves me toward Stella.

Nyx lands in the center of the room, her body radiating darkness that makes my skin crawl. The three original vampire lords drop down behind her, their ancient eyes glowing with hunger.

I grab Stella, pulling her unconscious body into my arms. She's too heavy. I can't carry her fast enough.

"There's nowhere to run, brother," Nyx says, her voice layered with something evil. "The First controls me now. And it wants the bridges."

Kaelen moves faster than sight, slamming his fist into the wall. The stone crumbles, revealing another passage—this one even darker than the last.

"GO!" he roars.

I stumble through, half-carrying, half-dragging Stella. Behind us, I hear fighting—Kaelen against Nyx and the ancient lords. Through our bond, I feel his desperation.

He's buying us time.

The passage twists and turns. I have no idea where I'm going. Just away. Just somewhere safe.

Finally, I burst into a wider space—some kind of storage room. Old crates. Dusty shelves. A single small window near the ceiling.

I lay Stella down gently, gasping for breath.

Footsteps echo in the passage behind me. Coming fast.

No. No, no, no.

I look around frantically. Nowhere to hide. Nowhere to—

Wait.

Behind the crates, there's a gap. Just big enough for two people if we squeeze tight.

I pull Stella into the space just as the footsteps reach the door.

My hand clamps over my mouth, forcing myself to breathe silently.

Through the gap in the crates, I see Nyx enter. She's alone now. The lords must be fighting Kaelen.

"I know you're here, little human." Her voice echoes. "I can smell your fear. Taste it in the air."

I hold completely still. Stella is unconscious against me, her breathing shallow but steady.

Nyx walks slowly through the room, checking every corner. Every shadow.

She's getting closer.

Closer.

Her hand reaches toward the crates—

A crash from the passage. Someone shouting.

Nyx turns, distracted. "Deal with the prince!" she calls out. "I'll find the bridges!"

She leaves, moving back toward the fighting.

I wait. Count to ten. Twenty. Thirty.

Silence.

I'm about to move when I hear new voices. Not Nyx. Not the ancient lords.

"Search everywhere. Blackwater wants them found."

Enforcers. Council enforcers.

My blood runs cold. Trapped between Nyx and the Council. Between darkness and law. Both wanting to kill us.

The enforcers enter the storage room.

"Check those crates," one orders.

I barely breathe. Through our bond, I send a desperate message to Kaelen: Help. Please.

But all I feel back is his pain. He's still fighting. Can't help.

We're alone.

The enforcer's hand grabs the top crate. Starts to pull it away—

A window shatters above us. Someone drops through in a blur of motion.

"Evening, boys." The voice is young. Male. Unfamiliar.

I risk a look through the gap.

A teenage boy stands between us and the enforcers. He can't be more than sixteen. Dark hair. Bright green eyes. And a smile that says he's either very brave or very stupid.

"Who are you?" the enforcer demands.

"Nobody important. Just passing through." The boy's smile widens. "Unless you're looking for a moonblood child and her hybrid sister. Then I'm very important."

The enforcers attack.

The boy moves like water—dodging, spinning, laughing the whole time. He's not vampire. Not human. Something else entirely.

"Come on, is that the best the Council's got?" He flips over one enforcer, kicks another in the head. "I've fought kindergarteners scarier than you!"

While they're distracted, a hand reaches into our hiding spot.

I almost scream—

"Shh." A girl, maybe eighteen, with the same green eyes as the boy. "I'm Mira. That's my idiot brother, Cole. We're here to help."

"How did you—"

"No time. Can you walk?"

"Stella's unconscious. I need to carry—"

"I've got her." Mira lifts my sister easily, like she weighs nothing. "You stick close to me. Cole will cover our escape."

"Who are you?" I whisper.

"Marius sent us." She smiles. "Welcome to the resistance."

We slip out through the broken window while Cole keeps the enforcers busy. Outside, a car waits—sleek, black, engine running.

A woman sits in the driver's seat. She looks about thirty, with silver streaks in her black hair.

"Get in," she orders. "We have maybe two minutes before—"

The building explodes.

Not with fire. With darkness. Pure, consuming darkness that swallows light.

Through the smoke, I see Kaelen stumble out. He's covered in blood. Barely standing.

And behind him—

The First emerges from the darkness.

"RUN!" Kaelen screams.

But we can't. Because surrounding our car are more enforcers. More ancient vampires. More darkness.

We're completely surrounded.

The First smiles with too many teeth.

"End of the line, little bridges."

Then something impossible happens.

The ground beneath us starts glowing. Not gold. Not silver.

White. Pure, burning white.

And a voice speaks—not from above, not from the darkness, but from everywhere at once.

"Not today, old friend."

The white light explodes upward, forming a barrier around our car.

Through the brightness, I see a figure walking toward us.

Tall. Ancient. Radiating power that makes even the First step back.

When he speaks, his voice holds the weight of millennia.

"I am Marius. And these children are under my protection now."

He looks at the First with eyes that have seen the birth of worlds.

"So unless you want to finish what we started three thousand years ago, I suggest you leave. Now."

The First's smile fades.

For the first time since it rose from the darkness, it looks uncertain.

"Marius. I thought you were dead."

"I was. Then I got better." Marius's smile is sharp and cold. "Shall we dance, old enemy? Or will you be smart and retreat?"

The First's eyes narrow.

Then it speaks words that freeze my blood.

"Keep them for now. But know this, Marius—when the convergence comes, when all three bridges align, not even you can stop what's been set in motion."

It melts back into darkness.

The ancient vampires flee.

The enforcers scatter.

We're alone with Marius and his people.

"Get them in the car," Marius orders. "We move to the compound. Now."

As Mira helps me into the vehicle, I look at Kaelen.

He's staring at Marius with an expression I can't read.

Fear. Awe. Recognition.

"You know him," I realize.

"Yes." Kaelen's voice is hollow. "He's the one who made me. Three thousand years ago, he's the one who turned my father into the first angel-vampire hybrid."

Marius meets Kaelen's eyes.

"Hello, grandson. We have much to discuss."
