Chapter 18 The Warehouse
Lyra's POV
A hundred vampires charge at us from both sides.
"Get behind me!" Kaelen shouts, moving in front of Stella and me.
But I don't hide. My new hybrid body moves on instinct—faster than thought. I grab the first vampire that reaches us and throw him into three others. They crash into the wall hard enough to crack stone.
I stare at my hands, shocked. "I didn't know I could do that."
"Neither did I," Kaelen's grandmother says, wonder in her voice. "Hybrid strength is extraordinary."
More vampires flood in. Kaelen fights beside me, his centuries of experience making him deadly efficient. But there are too many. For every one we stop, five more appear.
An enforcer grabs Stella. She screams.
Rage floods through me—pure and overwhelming. The mark on my collarbone blazes with light. Power explodes outward in a silver wave, knocking back every vampire within twenty feet.
Everyone freezes, staring.
"What was that?" I gasp.
"Hybrid magic." Kaelen's grandmother's eyes are wide. "You can manipulate the bond's energy. Use it as a weapon."
Thaddeus's expression has gone from confident to calculating. "Interesting. The hybrid has more power than expected. We'll need to adjust our approach."
He signals his vampires. They don't charge again. Instead, they form a circle around us—weapons raised, waiting for orders.
"You can't win," Thaddeus says calmly. "Even with your new abilities, you're outnumbered. Surrender now, and I'll make your deaths quick."
"Or?" Kaelen challenges.
"Or I kill the girl first." Thaddeus nods toward Stella. "Slowly. While you watch. Then I'll take my time with the rest of you."
Through the bond, I feel Kaelen's cold fury. But also his calculation. He's looking for an escape route, any advantage we can use.
There isn't one.
"Let them go," I say. "Take me instead. I'm what you want—the moonblood carrier, the hybrid. Let Kaelen and Stella leave, and I'll surrender."
"No!" Stella and Kaelen shout together.
"Touching," Thaddeus says. "But pointless. I want all of you. The hybrid for study. The prince for execution. The sister for insurance." His smile widens. "One big happy family, reunited in death."
The vampires tighten their circle. We're running out of time.
Kaelen's grandmother suddenly laughs—high and sharp. "You forgot one thing, Thaddeus."
"What's that?"
"I'm older than you. Stronger than you. And I've been tolerating your Council's existence for five hundred years." Her mercury eyes flash pure silver. "But I'm done being tolerant."
She raises both hands. The First City responds.
The ancient stone walls begin to glow. Symbols carved millennia ago activate, blazing with power that makes my new hybrid senses scream. The vampires stagger, overwhelmed by magic older than their bloodlines.
"The First City protects its own," she says. "And you've brought violence into sacred ground. That requires consequences."
The floor cracks open. Not collapsing this time—opening deliberately. Tendrils of pure magic erupt, wrapping around Thaddeus's vampires like living chains. They scream as the magic burns them.
"Run!" Kaelen's grandmother shouts at us. "I'll hold them as long as I can!"
"We can't leave you—" Kaelen starts.
"You can and you will!" Her voice carries command that makes even ancient vampires obey. "Protect the hybrid. She's more important than any of us. Go!"
Kaelen grabs my hand. I grab Stella's. We run.
Behind us, Thaddeus roars orders. His vampires fight against the magical chains, breaking free one by one. His grandmother's magic is powerful, but there are too many enemies.
We race through the First City's ancient streets. My hybrid speed lets me keep pace with Kaelen while pulling Stella along. We're heading for the underground river when footsteps echo behind us.
Five vampires. Fast ones. Gaining.
"Keep going!" Kaelen releases my hand, spinning to face them. "Get to the river!"
"I'm not leaving you!"
"You have to!" He pushes me forward. "Protect Stella. That's more important than—"
One of the pursuing vampires tackles him. They crash into a building, stone shattering.
"Kaelen!" I scream through the bond.
But Stella is tugging my arm. "Lyra, more are coming! We have to move!"
She's right. A dozen more vampires are flooding into the street. If we stop to fight, we'll be overwhelmed.
Through the bond, I feel Kaelen's determination. He's choosing to buy us time. Choosing to face them alone so Stella and I can escape.
I'll find you, his thought comes through the bond. I promise. Just get her to safety.
Tears blur my vision as I run. Every step away from him feels like tearing my soul in half. The bond screams at me to turn back, to fight beside him.
But Stella needs me. And Kaelen needs me to survive.
We reach the underground river. The water rushes past, dark and fast.
"We have to jump," I tell Stella.
"I can't swim that well—"
"I'll hold you. Trust me."
She nods, terrified but trusting.
We're about to jump when a voice stops us cold.
"Going somewhere?"
I spin. Vivienne stands behind us, flanked by ten Council enforcers. My ex-best friend smiles—cruel and triumphant.
"Did you really think you'd escape?" She steps closer. "Thaddeus promised me a reward for helping capture you. A title. Status. Everything I deserve."
"Vivienne, please—" I start.
"Please?" She laughs. "You're begging now? How pathetic. The girl who 'stole' the vampire prince's attention, reduced to begging her former friend."
"I never wanted his attention. I never asked for any of this—"
"But you got it anyway!" Her composure cracks, showing the jealousy beneath. "You—a blood donor, a nobody—marked by the most powerful vampire in the city. While I had to claw and scrape for every scrap of recognition." She signals the enforcers. "Take them. Thaddeus wants the hybrid alive, but the sister is expendable."
The enforcers move forward.
Through the bond, I feel Kaelen fighting for his life somewhere in the First City. I feel his grandmother's magic weakening as Thaddeus overwhelms her. I feel everything falling apart.
And I realize: I can't save everyone. I have to choose.
Stella or Kaelen.
My sister or my bonded mate.
The choice tears me in half.
I look at Stella's terrified face. Thirteen years old. My responsibility. The only family I have left.
Then I feel Kaelen through the bond—his love, his sacrifice, his certainty that I'll choose my sister.
Save her, his thought comes through. I'll die knowing you're both safe. That's enough.
Tears stream down my face as I push Stella toward the water.
"Jump. Swim downstream. Don't stop until you reach daylight."
"What about you?"
"I'm going back for Kaelen."
"Lyra, no—"
"I love you." I hug her tight. "But I can't let him die alone. I can't—" My voice breaks. "Go. Please. Live for both of us."
I shove her into the water before she can argue. She surfaces, crying my name, but the current carries her away.
Safe.
I turn to face Vivienne and her enforcers. Through the bond, I feel Kaelen's horror as he realizes what I've done. What I'm about to do.
"You sent your only family away to save a vampire?" Vivienne shakes her head. "You really are pathetic."
"Maybe." I let my hybrid power rise. The mark blazes silver. "But at least I know what love is. You sold yours for a title and fake status."
I charge.
Five enforcers go down before they realize I've moved. My hybrid strength and speed make me deadly. But there are still too many.
They overwhelm me. Pin me down. Silver chains wrap around my wrists, burning.
"Bring her to Thaddeus," Vivienne orders. "He'll want to start the experiments immediately."
They drag me back through the First City. Back toward Thaddeus. Back toward death.
Through the bond, Kaelen is screaming my name.
And I send one thought back: Stella is safe. That's all that matters.
We emerge into the central chamber. Kaelen's grandmother lies unconscious, magic-chains binding her. Kaelen kneels in silver chains, three vampires holding him down.
His eyes meet mine across the chamber. Through the bond, I feel his anguish. His love. His absolute certainty that we're both about to die.
Thaddeus smiles, approaching with his obsidian cane.
"The hybrid returns. How noble." He stops in front of me. "Where's the sister?"
"Gone. You'll never find her."
His smile widens. "We'll see. But first—" He drives his cane down on my hand.
Bones shatter. I scream.
Through the bond, Kaelen roars, fighting against his chains hard enough to draw blood.
"Don't worry," Thaddeus says pleasantly. "This is just the beginning. We have so many experiments planned for the first hybrid in a thousand years." He leans close. "By the time I'm done, you'll beg me to kill you."
He raises his cane again.
And the entire First City begins to shake.
