Ch 34: Choice: Danger or An Opportunity
The cavern widened as Emrys walked closer to the glow.
Soon, he entered a massive chamber.
The walls were lined with strange, glowing crystals that gave off a pale, eerie light. The air was thick with energy, and the metallic smell was stronger.
In the center of the chamber, a massive creature was curled up. Its body was covered in jagged, black exoskeleton plates, and its claws were sharp and gleaming. It looked like a larger, more terrifying version of the insectoids Emrys had fought before. Its eyes were closed, but its body twitched slightly, as if sensing his presence.
Emrys froze. His breath caught in his throat. He could feel the power radiating from the creature. This was no ordinary insectoid, it was something far more dangerous.
His grip on his blade tightened.
"What have I gotten myself into?" he thought, his heart pounding.
Emrys stood frozen. His body trembled as he stared at the massive insectoid before him. It was unlike anything he had ever seen or felt. His legs felt weak like they would give out any moment. His heart pounded so loudly in his chest that it echoed in his ears.
The insectoid's sheer presence pressed down on him. It was heavy and suffocating. It was as if he were an ant standing before a towering mountain, one that could crush him without even noticing.
This wasn’t just fear, it was a feeling of complete helplessness.
Even Elysia, with her incredible power as a Seventh Star Esper, had never made him feel this way. When she unleashed her full strength, it was overwhelming, but it didn’t make him feel… insignificant.
But now, in front of this insectoid, he felt small, like he didn’t matter at all.
The creature’s eyes twitched slightly, its black exoskeleton glinting faintly under the glow of the crystals. Emrys could sense something. He could sense an invisible force, a kind of sharp awareness that had focused on him completely. Obviously, the insectoid already knew he was there, even though its eyes remained shut.
This realization made his fear grow even stronger. He didn’t dare to move or make a sound. His mind screamed at him to run, but his legs wouldn’t listen.
The insectoid’s presence was growing heavier. Emrys's sensation of being watched also became sharper and sharper.
Emrys clenched his fists. His palms were slick with sweat. Deep in his heart, he knew that if this creature opened its eyes or moved even slightly, he wouldn’t stand a chance.
But then, he noticed something strange.
He noticed that this terrifying insectoid didn’t open its eyes or move. Only its eyelids were twitching again and again, but it stayed in place. It was as if something was holding it down or preventing it from fully waking up.
"Phuuu!"
Relief washed over Emrys like a cool breeze. His shoulders relaxed slightly, and he exhaled deeply, not realizing he had been holding his breath.
"It… can’t move?" he muttered inwardly. His voice was barely loud enough to hear.
Even though the insectoid was terrifying, its stillness gave him a sliver of hope.
Maybe, just maybe, it couldn't harm him as long as he didn’t provoke it.
Emrys took another deep breath, steadying his nerves.
His fear didn’t go away, but he forced himself to think clearly.
"I’m lucky... at least for now," he thought, his voice trembling in his mind.
Emrys stood still. His hands kept shaking slightly.
The huge insectoid didn’t move, but its presence was like a heavy weight pressing on him.
"I should leave. I should get far away from here," he thought deep in his heart. After all, the idea of staying made his heart race with fear.
But just as he turned slightly, ready to step back, a strange feeling rushed over him. It was like a voice inside his mind, wordless yet clear, pulling him forward.
It seemed to tell him not to leave just yet. Instead, he should go deeper.
"What is this?"
Emrys froze again, his body trembling. It was not a voice that came from someone else, this was his inner voice. It was as if his instincts were screaming at him to move further into the cave.
Moreover, it wasn’t a voice he could ignore. It felt stronger than his fear.
"But why? This is crazy!" Emrys thought.
His rational mind fought back his instincts quickly.
After all, staying here was dangerous. The insectoid was terrifying, and going deeper could mean even more danger.
Yet every time he thought about leaving, the feeling grew stronger. It was like an invisible hand was guiding him, pushing him to go deeper.
His chest tightened. His thoughts clashed like two battling storms. One side told him to run, to escape while he could. The other side told him to trust his instincts, that something important was waiting deeper inside.
Emrys clenched his fists. His breathing was uneven.
"What do I do?" he muttered under his breath.
He glanced at the insectoid again. It still didn’t move, but the pressure from its presence didn’t lessen.
"If I stay, I might die... but if I leave, will I regret it?"
He felt his instincts telling him that deep inside this cavern was something that he really should not let go of. Otherwise, he would regret his entire life.
The thought of missing something—something his instincts seemed so sure about—made his heart ache. It was as if an opportunity, a chance for something incredible, was waiting ahead.
His fear didn’t go away, but neither did the pull in his heart. He felt like a rope was tied around him, pulling him in two directions.
Sweat dripped down his face. His legs refused to move, caught in the struggle between fear and determination.
Finally, Emrys closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
"If I leave now, I’ll never know what is ahead," he thought. Then, he seemed to have decided something and muttered in a shaky but firm voice, "I have to trust myself. My instincts have helped me greatly over the past few days. Since it is telling me to go deeper, I'll take the risk and venture deep inside this cave. I just hope this dangerous insectoid does not move or come to stop or kill me."
Slowly and cautiously, Emrys took a deep breath and then took a step forward. Just like that, he started moving deeper into the cave.
Each step Emrys took felt like a battle inside him. He wanted to stop and run away, but his instincts urged him to hold and continue to walk.
"I don’t know what’s waiting for me, but I’ll find out."
And with that, Emrys pushed forward without holding back.
