Chapter 45

Chapter 45

Travis paused, gently placing the pen on his desk.

"Make sure they keep an eye on him."

Travis looked up at Kian, puzzled. "Anything else?"

Kian seemed uncertain. "That's it?"

"That's it."

As Kian stepped out, the officers still working immediately surrounded him.

"What did the Captain say?"

"What about Jesse?"

"Come on, spill it! We're dying here."

Kian glanced at them. "The Captain said to keep an eye on him."

"That's it?"

"That's it."

Everyone looked towards Travis's office.

Was this really the Travis they knew?

Jesse was clearly being set up, and Travis just closed the case like that?

Little did they know, Travis wanted to save Jesse too.

But what could he do?

This place was all about evidence, and Jesse had taken all the blame himself.

Besides, Travis had already given Jesse a chance.

Meanwhile, in the prison.

Jesse had changed into his prison uniform, crouching in the corner of his cell.

His hands clutched his head, his eyes vacant.

Nearby, some impatient insults could be heard.

Just then, the door opened.

"Jesse, someone wants to see you."

Jesse looked up, bewildered, at the officer in front of him.

He followed the officer to the visitation room.

A woman with a smile sat there.

It was Elaine.

"Have a seat."

Elaine pointed to the chair opposite her, smiling.

"Don't be nervous. I just have a few questions."

"I've already confessed to everything. It was all me. What more do you want?"

Elaine smiled and pulled out a statement.

"I have my own judgment. I'm here to ask about something else."

Seeing Elaine's intense gaze, Jesse resisted, "I don't know anything. Stop asking me."

He stood up, ready to leave.

Elaine spoke directly, "If you don't want anything to happen to your parents, you'd better sit down and listen."

Hearing about his parents, Jesse stopped in his tracks.

His voice trembled uncontrollably, "You... you mean my parents?"

"Officer, my parents are fine. How could anything happen to them?"

"What if it was intentional?"

"You should know, they don't care about the lives of two lowly people."

Jesse sat down, staring straight at Elaine, "What do you know?"

Elaine smiled, "It's not about what I know, but what you're willing to say."

Jesse just stared at Elaine.

Elaine remained calm and composed.

"Would they really harm my parents?"

Elaine nodded slightly, "They will eliminate any potential threats."

"You took all the blame, but your parents won't believe it. If one day, your parents expose this, do you think they'll let them live?"

Elaine made a gesture, "It's better to act now while you're still under their control."

Jesse wasn't stupid. He knew they were capable of such things.

But he had done everything they asked.

Seeing Jesse's increasingly pained expression, Elaine's goal was achieved. She spoke softly, "I'm the only one who can help you now."

Jesse said nothing, standing up and walking back to his cell like a lifeless body, silver handcuffs still on his wrists.

Elaine didn't stop him, sitting alone, smiling self-deprecatingly.

She picked up her briefcase and left.

Back in his cell, Jesse sat on his bed, lost in thought.

His mind was filled with the voice from that phone call.

They had promised to take care of his parents. They wouldn't do what Elaine said, right?

No! Elaine was right. To eliminate potential threats, they would stop at nothing.

And he was that potential threat.

Jesse clutched his head in pain, his mind torn between two thoughts.

One urged him to stay silent and bear it all.

The other supported Elaine, believing the police were his only hope, at least for his parents' safety.

Jesse looked up at the faint moonlight streaming into his cell.

He had made up his mind.

The next morning, Jesse remained in the same position on his bed.

His eyes were bloodshot.

During yard time, Jesse approached an officer, requesting to see Elaine.

Soon, Elaine arrived at the visitation room, looking at Jesse. "Looks like you've made up your mind?"

Jesse didn't lift his head, his voice low, "Can you protect my parents?"

"Of course. Right now, we're the ones you can trust the most."

Jesse took a deep breath, looking at Elaine. "I don't know who they are."

"That day, I got a call. They knew everything about my parents. They threatened me, forcing me to take all the blame."

Elaine placed a recorder in front of him, "And you just agreed?"

Jesse gave a bitter smile, "I don't know who they are, but I know they're involved in the drug trade. They're not people I can fight against."

"I can't gamble with my parents' lives."

Jesse's expression was pained.

"You said you don't know their identity?"

Jesse nodded, "That's right. A woman called me, but she used a voice changer."

"They didn't say anything else?"

Jesse shook his head, looking up at Elaine with bloodshot eyes, "That's all I know. I had nothing to do with Aurora's death."

At this point, Jesse had nothing left to hide.

He revealed everything.

Including the crime scene and why he was in Aurora's room, all orchestrated by them.

According to Jesse, they had two plans.

One for if Jesse got caught, and one for if he didn't.

After confessing, Jesse felt a weight lifted off his shoulders.

He walked with a lighter step.

Elaine sat in her car, her expression serious.

"Could it be her?"

Back in his cell, Jesse sat on his bed, burying his head in his knees.

The door suddenly burst open, and several burly men with hostile expressions entered.

They pulled out a photo, comparing it to Jesse.

Then they nodded slowly.

"Jesse?"

Jesse nodded slowly, "Who are you?"

"The police have already talked to you?"

The burly man signaled, and someone stood at the door, watching the hallway.
