Ch. 28 The Last Stand

Ch. 28 The Last Stand

The howl sliced through the air, a siren call that sent chills down my spine. My heart pounded as I glanced at Lyra.

“Stay close,” I commanded, but deep down, I knew she’d fight beside me no matter what.

We pushed through the chaos until we reached the edge of the fray, where Silas stood like a dark specter. His icy blue eyes gleamed with malice as he surveyed the battlefield, taking in every ounce of carnage with a cruel smile.

“Zane,” he drawled, his voice smooth as silk and just as deadly. “How nice of you to join me.”

My fists clenched at my sides, a whirlwind of emotions churning within me. Anger ignited; the loss of Eira swelled in my chest like a consuming fire.

“You’ve gone too far this time, Silas.”

“Have I?” He chuckled softly, tilting his head slightly. “Or have you merely stepped into my territory? Your little alliance with Lyra? It’s amusing, really.” He gestured dismissively toward her, and I felt a growl rise in my throat.

I surged forward without hesitation, fueled by fury and heartbreak. Silas met me halfway, moving like liquid shadow as he sidestepped my advance.

“Predictable,” he sneered before lunging at me.

Our bodies collided with a brutal force; his cold hands gripped my throat as I retaliated with a powerful elbow to his ribs. He staggered back for just a moment but quickly regained his footing, an unsettling grin spreading across his face.

“Is this all you’ve got?”

I focused on my breathing and unleashed another blow to his jaw that sent him reeling again—only for him to laugh as he regained composure.

“This is hardly even a challenge,” Silas taunted while wiping away the trickle of blood from his lips. “You fight with your heart too much; it’s your greatest weakness.”

His words struck home harder than any punch ever could. Memories of Eira flashed before me—the warmth of her smile and laughter—but anger eclipsed that pain now. With renewed determination, I charged again, our bodies colliding once more in an explosion of strength and fury.

This time when he swung back at me, I anticipated it—grabbing his wrist and twisting hard until I heard the satisfying crack of bone beneath my grip.

Silas hissed but retaliated swiftly, thrusting out a knee that connected painfully with my gut. The air rushed from my lungs as I stumbled back; the world around us faded into nothingness except for him—my adversary cloaked in shadows.

He stepped closer, every inch of him radiating menace and confidence as if relishing our confrontation.

“Your pack will never accept you after this,” he taunted softly. “They’ll see what you truly are: weak.”

His words were a punch to the gut, but I refused to let them break me. Rage, hot and consuming, coursed through my veins. I lunged, claws extended, aiming for his throat. Silas was faster, slipping aside with a mocking laugh.

He countered with a vicious kick to my ribs, sending me sprawling. Pain exploded in my chest, stealing my breath. I tasted blood, metallic and warm, on my tongue. But the taste fueled me, ignited a primal fury that eclipsed the agony.

I scrambled to my feet, ignoring the throbbing in my side. My vision narrowed, focusing solely on Silas. Every muscle in my body screamed in protest, but I pushed harder, driven by a desperate need to protect Lyra, to avenge Eira, to prove Silas wrong.

His arrogance fueled my attack. He danced around me, a predator toying with its prey, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. I pressed the offensive, unleashing a flurry of blows, each one fueled by raw, untamed power.

He parried, blocked, and countered, his movements fluid and precise. Sparks flew as our claws clashed, sending showers of light across the battlefield. The air crackled with energy, the scent of ozone mingling with the metallic tang of blood.

I landed a blow to his shoulder, drawing a roar of pain from him. He stumbled, momentarily off balance.

This was my chance.

I channeled every ounce of strength into a single, devastating blow, aiming for his chest. My fist connected with a sickening thud, sending him crashing backward. He hit the ground hard, the wind knocked out of him.

I stood over him, panting, chest heaving, my body trembling with exertion. He lay motionless, a dark stain spreading across his chest.

The remaining vampires, their faces etched with shock and fear, hesitated.

I stood over Silas, breathless, the adrenaline coursing through me like wildfire. The world blurred around us, but all I could focus on was him—the vampire lord sprawled on the ground, his icy blue eyes wide with disbelief.

“Zane…” he rasped, pain lacing his voice. “You… can’t be serious.”

I leaned down, my face inches from his. “You thought you could threaten my pack and get away with it?”

His lips twisted into a smirk, even as blood pooled beneath him. “You think this changes anything? You’re still outnumbered.”

A tremor ran through me at his words. I had seen the fear in my pack's eyes earlier; I knew Silas had a point. But this moment felt monumental. I had fought back against the darkness he represented.

“Your reign ends here,” I declared, fury igniting my resolve.

Silas struggled to sit up, wincing as he did so. “I’ve lost battles before, Zane,” he said through gritted teeth, “but never this war.”

His bravado faltered; I watched the flicker of fear dance across his features. It stirred something deep within me—a mix of triumph and pity.

“Why continue this cycle?” I demanded. “The bloodshed between our kinds has to stop.”

He scoffed, though it lacked conviction. “And join forces with a werewolf? You think that’s possible? We are predators.”

“Maybe you’re right.” I stepped back slightly, giving him space as the reality of what lay ahead settled in my gut. “But you don’t have to be one anymore.”

He chuckled weakly but coughed violently, dark droplets spraying from his lips onto the dirt below.

I took a step closer again; no hesitation lingered in my heart now. This was not just about survival—it was about choice.

“You’ve lost everything,” I said quietly, looking deep into his fading gaze.

Silas looked away for a moment—perhaps remembering what he’d lost long ago—or perhaps plotting some final play.

With a sudden surge of energy fueled by desperation and anger, I thrust forward and pinned him to the ground with a fierce growl erupting from my throat.

He gasped as realization struck him; his body stiffened under my grip.

“No!” His voice broke into a plea as I drove my claws deeper into him.

In that instant, Silas met my gaze one last time—a fleeting moment of vulnerability washed over his features before darkness swallowed them whole.

With that final connection severed between us, he fell limp beneath me, lifeless and cold.

The battle around us stilled momentarily; shock rippled through both packs as they witnessed Silas's fall from power—a figure once feared reduced to nothing but memory and dust.
