Ch. 23 Fractured Souls
Ch. 23 Fractured Souls
The walk back from Eira’s grave felt different, lighter. Each step pushed the weight of sorrow further behind me. I took a deep breath, the crisp air filling my lungs with a newfound clarity. It wasn’t about forgetting her; it was about carrying her spirit forward.
As I neared the pack’s clearing, unease settled in my stomach. The energy buzzed like a storm on the horizon. I could sense the tension thickening in the air, even before I reached the heart of our territory.
Voices rose sharply as I entered the clearing.
“What do you mean he’s been meeting with her?” A familiar voice rang out—Finn, one of my most trusted lieutenants.
“He's endangering us all! Zane can’t be serious about this,” another voice chimed in, laced with anger.
I stepped forward, trying to catch sight of their faces amid the growing crowd.
“What’s going on?” I barked, my authority slicing through their heated exchanges. The group fell silent and turned toward me.
Finn crossed his arms, his jaw clenched tight. “You’ve been consorting with that vampire—Lyra! Our enemies!”
“Consorting? You make it sound like I’m betraying our pack.” My pulse quickened as anger flared within me. “You know she has nothing to do with Silas.”
A murmur rippled through the gathering wolves, uncertainty flickering across their faces. They wanted blood—revenge against vampires for Eira’s death—but they had also looked to me for guidance through this chaos.
“Silas is watching,” Finn pressed on, his eyes narrowed into slits. “If he sees you growing close to Lyra, he’ll use it against us. He wants you weak.”
“And what about your betrayal?” I shot back, feeling adrenaline spike through my veins as frustration bubbled over. “This isn’t just about me anymore! You’re feeding old grudges instead of finding solutions.”
His expression darkened further at my accusation.
“Watch your tone.” Finn leaned closer, anger flaring in his voice as others shifted uneasily around us.
“You think this is easy for me?” My hands balled into fists at my sides. “I lost Eira! Do you think I’d risk everything if I didn’t believe in something bigger?”
Silence hung heavily between us; doubt lingered in their eyes.
“What are we supposed to do?” A voice piped up from the back—one filled with confusion and fear.
I met each gaze around me; there was no backing down now.
“We fight together or fall apart!” My words echoed in the clearing like thunder as resolve coursed through me again—a reminder that betrayal wouldn’t win while there was still hope left to hold onto.
The tension escalated further as Finn squared off against me, ready for battle if necessary.
I felt every heartbeat around us—the pulse of my pack—and steeled myself for what lay ahead.
The tension in the clearing crackled like static, each breath heavy with unspoken fears. I scanned the faces of my pack, their expressions a mix of anger and concern. They wanted answers, but all I had was confusion swirling in my gut.
“Get rid of her,” Finn spat, his voice low and threatening. “You know she’s dangerous.”
“Dangerous?” I echoed, disbelief slicing through me. “You think Lyra is the enemy? She’s trying to help us!”
“Help?” Finn scoffed, disbelief coloring his tone. “You’ve lost your mind. You’re letting your feelings cloud your judgment.”
I felt my pulse quicken at his words, a fierce protectiveness igniting within me.
“She’s not just a vampire,” I shot back, my voice firm as I struggled to keep my composure. “She’s been through hell, just like us. She knows what we’re facing.”
A chorus of dissent erupted around me, voices rising like a wave crashing against rock.
“She belongs to Silas’s clan! They’ve waged war on us for generations!” someone shouted from the back, fear tinging their voice.
“What do you expect us to do?” another added. “Open our arms and invite her in? While we watch our loved ones fall?”
I could feel the anger bubbling beneath the surface, but desperation seeped through too—a reminder of Eira’s love for peace amidst chaos.
“You think I’m blind?” I gestured emphatically, taking a step closer to the gathered wolves. “You think this is easy for me? Every moment spent with Lyra feels like betrayal and freedom all at once.”
Finn took a step forward, narrowing his eyes as he studied me. “Then choose: your pack or your vampire lover.”
Those words struck like a knife; they echoed in my mind long after he finished speaking. A collective hush fell over the group as they awaited my response.
I searched their faces—fear and loyalty battled for dominance among them—and suddenly felt like an outsider in my own skin.
“I can’t simply abandon her.” My voice cracked under the weight of that truth.
Finn shook his head slowly, disappointment etched deep into his features. “If you don’t end this now, you’ll lose us all.”
The gravity of his words hung heavy in the air as murmurs rippled through the crowd again—discontent simmered beneath their concern.
I stared at Finn, the weight of his words pressing down on me like a boulder. Every breath felt heavier, and I could sense the tension in the clearing rising with each heartbeat. I wanted to defend Lyra, to explain how her haunted past mirrored my own. But the looks on my pack’s faces—the fear, the uncertainty—made my heart sink.
“Zane,” Finn pressed, his voice cutting through the thick silence. “What’s it going to be? You’re risking everything we’ve built.”
I clenched my fists, feeling nails dig into my palms as I fought to keep control. “I’m not abandoning anyone. Not Lyra. Not Eira.”
“Eira is gone!” Finn snapped, his anger flaring like a spark in dry brush. “You can’t keep pretending she’s still here!”
“Eira wouldn’t want this,” I finally said, the words tasting bitter on my tongue. “She believed in unity, in finding peace between our kind.”
A low murmur rippled through the crowd again; doubt hung thick in the air.
“Unity?” Finn scoffed. “You think we can be united with them after everything they’ve done? We’re not all so quick to forget!”
The echoes of their doubts wrapped around me like chains. I stepped back and took a breath, grounding myself in the reality that surrounded me.
“Look around you!” My voice rose above their whispers as I gestured to my pack members—their weary faces reflected our shared history of bloodshed and loss. “We’re tired of fighting! Tired of this cycle of vengeance! If we keep going down this path, we’ll end up destroying ourselves.”
Finn shook his head slowly but couldn’t hide his frustration.
“You don’t get it,” he muttered under his breath.
“Then help me understand,” I replied sharply, meeting his gaze with defiance.
He hesitated for a moment before replying, “By putting your trust in a vampire? How can we believe she won’t turn against us?”
“I trust her because she’s shown me who she is beneath all that history.” The words came out with more force than intended; each one struck me as much as it did him.
“But what if you’re wrong?” Finn shot back, desperation creeping into his tone.
My heart raced as silence fell again, the weight of expectation hanging between us. Every eye was on me now; every heart waited for an answer that seemed just out of reach.
