Ch. 18 A Dangerous Revelation
The murmurs grew louder, each voice twisting my gut further. I scanned the faces of my pack, looking for support but finding only doubt.
Elena's eyes darted to the side, her lips pressed into a thin line. “You’re putting your loyalty in jeopardy. We can’t afford to be vulnerable right now.”
“I’m trying to save us!” I shot back, frustration bubbling to the surface. “Not just from the vampires but from our own fear.”
Aric stepped forward again, arms still crossed tightly. “Fear can motivate action, Zane. You need to understand that.”
Just then, a figure stepped out of the shadows—Fiona, her fiery hair catching the early morning light like a warning flare. Her green eyes narrowed at me with a mix of anger and something darker.
“What’s going on here?” she demanded, looking between me and Aric.
“Zane thinks he can just cozy up to vampires without consequences,” Aric retorted.
Fiona’s gaze hardened as she turned back to me. “You’re losing them,” she said bluntly, not even attempting to mask her disdain. “You’ve lost your way since Eira.”
My heart clenched at her words; they felt like knives twisting deeper into my chest. I could almost hear Eira’s laughter echoing in my mind—a reminder of who I had been before all this chaos swallowed us whole.
“I’m trying to find a way forward,” I replied through gritted teeth. “This isn’t about me; it’s about protecting everyone.”
She shook her head slowly, her stubbornness flaring like wildfire. “You think bending over backward for a vampire is going to protect us?”
“Fiona,” I said, urgency creeping into my tone, “you don’t understand what Lyra—”
“Enough!” she interrupted, her voice cutting through the air like a blade.
Her defiance hung thick between us as tension crackled in the space where trust used to dwell.
“I know more than you think,” Fiona snapped back, stepping closer as if daring me to challenge her authority.
“What are you saying?” My voice dropped an octave as I watched her carefully.
A sly smirk crossed her lips—a glimmer of something sinister flickered in her eyes. “You think you’re leading us? While you’re off chasing after vampires, some of us are taking matters into our own hands.”
My blood ran cold as realization hit me like ice water. A conspiracy was brewing right under my nose—she had orchestrated this rebellion against me while playing the part of the dutiful sister.
“Are you serious?” The betrayal stung more than I expected.
“We need someone strong at the helm,” Fiona insisted, unflinching under my gaze. “And if that means removing you… so be it.”
I glanced around; whispers rose and fell among the pack members behind her, uncertain loyalties surfacing with every passing second. The ground beneath me felt unstable as I stood there, facing both my sister and my own downfall all at once.
The weight of her words hung heavy in the air. I felt my chest tighten, as if the pack's collective breath had drawn into a single, suffocating point.
“Fiona, this isn’t the way,” I said, struggling to keep my voice steady. “We need unity now more than ever.”
She scoffed, crossing her arms defiantly. “Unity? Is that what you call it when you throw our future away for a vampire?”
Anger bubbled inside me. “You think I’m throwing it away? You don’t know anything about what’s at stake!”
Her green eyes flashed with something fierce, and for a moment, I saw the sister who had stood by me through countless battles, not this version fueled by grief and resentment.
“Maybe you’ve changed too much,” she shot back. “Ever since Eira…”
I clenched my fists, feeling the pain clawing up from my gut. Eira’s name lingered in the air like smoke from a dying fire. “Don’t bring her into this.”
“Oh, but she’s here, Zane.” Fiona took a step forward, closing the distance between us. “She’s all you think about. You’re living in the past while we’re facing a real threat.”
My pulse quickened as I glanced at the pack members gathered behind her—some looked troubled; others wore expressions of barely concealed anger.
“Fiona,” I said quietly, desperation creeping into my tone. “You can’t lead us down this path.”
“I’m trying to save us!” she exclaimed, her voice cracking with emotion.
“You’re pushing us apart!” My frustration boiled over as I took a step closer to her.
The silence stretched uncomfortably before she let out a bitter laugh. “And what if it’s you who needs saving?”
I opened my mouth to retort but hesitated. The truth loomed over me like a storm cloud; maybe I was lost—adrift between two worlds and haunted by memories that wouldn’t let go.
A sharp voice cut through my thoughts: Aric stepped forward again, looking ready to pick up where we left off.
“We can’t trust anyone who doesn’t share our blood,” he declared loudly enough for everyone to hear.
I shot him an incredulous look. “That’s not how this works!”
He shrugged dismissively while some pack members nodded in agreement.
The rift widened further with every exchange—a chasm filled with unspoken fears and buried grief—and all I could do was stand there helplessly as it threatened to swallow us whole.
