Chapter 303
Chapter 303
Skyler POV
I stood in the doorway watching Matt and Dalton disappear into the alley. Rayne waited behind to say goodbye. I didn't want him to leave me again, not so soon.
"Stay here," he said, "I'll come back with Stephanie in a short while."
"Rayne," I said my breath catching in my throat. "Be careful you're not at full strength. Let Matt and Dalton do the heavy work."
"I'm strong, Skyler." He said.
I grabbed his t-shirt and kissed him and broke away quickly. Rayne stood motionless. Closing my eyes I said softly, "Go."
When I opened my eyes he was gone. All the emptiness I had felt without him returned to me. Hugging myself I shut the door and went back into my bedroom. I was tired and my body was screaming for sleep but I was too worried to sleep. Apart of me wanted to go looking for Stephanie because she once risked her safety to save me. Unable to sleep I went and sat at the window and looked out into the alleyway waiting for Rayne and Stephanie to return.
For twenty minutes I watched a black cat pick through rubbish in the alleyway. My eyes felt heavy and I rested my head against the window pane.
Glass cracked and I felt myself falling and my body thudded against the cold wet floor. Rain spat on my skin. I opened my eyes and saw the window I had fallen through. The frame must have rotted or something, I thought feeling dizzy. Looking to my right I saw a black blur moving towards me. Was it the black cat I saw earlier? The blur got larger and larger and larger.
"I am here." it spoke in the same terrible voice that haunted my dreams.
Was this a dream? I tried to move and felt pain shooting through my body. The monster came into view. It had the powerful body of lion with great claws and the head of bird of prey, its beak lined with jagged teeth.
It stood over me and bent its great head down and sniffed me,
"You are no longer human." it said curiously.
Taking another breathe in, it looked at me and said, "What are you?"
My mind was to muddled to reply. My vampire brother had biten me but I had not changed. I was warned that I was different but I had no idea how. Helplessly I tried to call for Rayne. A giant clawed foot pinned my body down.
"I wonder what you taste like?" It said.
I closed my eyes as the monster giant beak opened up to eat me. The monster made a funny noise that sounded like a 'huh?' and then it suddenly roared angrily and spun round releasing me. Opening my eyes the monster growled, "Did you do that?"
Puzzled I shook my head.
"Something pulled my tail and my tail is very sensitive." it said indignantly.
"I did not pull your tail." I said.
The monster eyed me suspiously then placed his giant foot on my tiny torso once again. Bending down to take a bite out of me it suddenly roared again. This time it jumped off me and searched around yelling, "Something pulled my tail!"
It grabbed trashcans and emptied them on to the pavement and opened dumpsters and looked inside. While it turned it's back a hand fell across mouth and voice whispered, "Don't scream."
I looked up at small blonde girl who I recognised from my dreams- Kala. Confused I looked at Kala and the monster both figments of my sleep. This had to be a dream I thought.
Kala lifted me like a rag doll over her shoulder and walked carefully away. The monster roared, "Vampire!"
Kala swore under her breathe and started running.
"Crap, crap, crap..." she kept repeating as the monster came thundering towards us.
"Rayne." I said weakly.
"He's busy with the werewolves." Kala said turning a corner.
"Rayne can help us." I said weakly.
Jac POV
I bundled the human into a car to be taken back to the court. The King and Queen will want to see her. It's just my luck that we finally get Rudolph deported and then Kala prophesises the arrival of his daughter. The girl, Stephanie, begs for her parents but I ignore her. The guards have already visted her parents and brain washed them into thinking she was away at a special school. I remembered when I first took Kala away from her mother we had to use a similar method. Thinking of my lovely wife I reached out to her. We had a unique telepathic bond which let us communicate to each other.
'Where are you?' I asked.
I knew she would be safe at home with our twins away from danger.
'Running away from a chicken on steroids.' Kala replied.
'That better be a game you're playing with the children.' I said.
'The children are with Sophie- I kinda disobeyed your orders.'
My heart stopped beating and I felt a cold rush of adrenaline shoot through my body, 'Where are you?'
'Just passing the library.'
'I'm coming.' I said moving quickly through the streets.
I could feel her tiredness and exhaustion beating at me. I needed to get to Kala quickly. Angirly I yelled at her, 'Why did you disobey my orders.'
'I'm your wife not your servant Jac.' she snapped back.
'If you stayed put you would not be in danger.'
'Skyler would have died, I had this dream warning me.'
'And you did not think to share this with me.'
'It's not that simply.' Kala replied holding something back.
'Why?' I yelled.
'Because you're not the one that is suppose to kill the demon.'
'Who is?'
Kala went quiet. I could sense her rising trepidation. The library was just ahead but Kala was nowhere to be seen. Then it occurred to me. Kala was lying.
Kala POV
Jac was angry, really, really pissed off. He had arrived at the library and found no monster. The truth was we were in the opposite end of the town running away from the monster. Jac and I could not defeat a demon. We lacked that power. The difference between us is that I would run and Jac would fight. If he choose to fight then he would die. Because of this I had to lie to protect him. The only one who could save us now was Skyler. She was the daughter of a God. Only she and her brother had the power to slay the chicken. Skyler's head lolled about on my shoulder.
"Wake up and do something!" I yelled at her.
Skyler lifted her head weakly, "I can't." she replied.
"You're the only one who can kill it."
"Are you joking? I'm not a fighter."
"If you do not fight then humanity and the world as we know it is screwed. This is the turning point Skyler. Sophie has done her part now it is your turn."
"Who the hell is Sophie and why did she need my boyfriend's help."
"Jealously will not help us honey."
"And what exactly is that thing?"
"An assassin sent to kill you. Rayne killed its brother not so long ago."
"So how am I suppose to kill it?"
"By using your freaky mojo powers?"
"I'm a hedge witch, I have no freaky powers. I do gentle chants and make stuff. I'm not a warrior."
I stopped and put Skyler on the ground.
"Look, this is it," I said pointing at the monster raging towards us. "Kill it or let the whole world die. Fight or die. Make your choice."
I leapt up onto the top of a building and looked down. Skyler was staring at me in bemusment. She had to have a power. There had to be something about her. I saw her defeat the demon. Jac was in the back of my mind searching for answers.
'Kala you are playing a dangerous game. Do you remember what happened the last time I thought I lost you?' He said.
'Jac, I love you.' I said shutting myself off from him.
Down below the demon had finally caught up. It leapt on to Skyler pinning her to the floor.
"Glory to the demon king," It hissed licking the bloody cut on her face. "I will enjoy devouring you."
"Rayne help..." she whispered.
My heart stopped, Skyler had given up? Why was she not fighting. She had a power. I know she did. Why wasn't she using it? If she died then so did everybody else. The monster opened its tremendous mouth revealing glinting sharp teeth. I screamed at Skyler to do something.
The monster made a hissing noise then suddenly slumped onto one side. Skyler and I stared at. What had happened? Nothing had happened.
"What did you do?" I asked jumping down from the building.
Skyler sat up confused. "Nothing. Absolutely nothing."
Nervously I looked down at the corpse of the demon. A strange smoke was pouring out its mouth. Skyler stood up slowly and looked at it.
"I did nothing," she repeated, "It knocked me down and..."
"Licked you."
"So?"
"It licked your blood and died," I said, "That's your power, your blood is toxic to demons. Christ, I thought you were going to start shooting fireballs or something-" My sentence was cut short as tall shadow descended over me. Weakly I smiled at Jac who had a face like a thunder cloud.
"Hello... Jac." I said dryly.
