Chapter 99 The Man in the Corridor

Chapter 99 The Man in the Corridor
The hospital corridor had never looked like this before.

Chairs were arranged neatly along the walls. A small group of nurses stood together, whispering and smiling. A few patients who were strong enough to walk had come out of their rooms to witness the ceremony. Even some hospital staff who did not work in the unit had quietly gathered at the far end.

At the center of it all hung the bell.

Simple. Gold. Waiting.

Mr. Waters stood beside Mrs. Waters, both dressed carefully for the occasion. Clara’s mother and Clara’s father stood close to them. Isaac lingered near the back, scanning the hallway with quiet excitement.

“Where is Peter?” Clara’s mother asked softly.

“He’s coming,” Mrs. Waters replied. “They’re just finishing something inside.”

Clara stood slightly apart from the group, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. She could feel her heart beating steadily against her ribs.

This was it.

After everything.

A nurse stepped forward and adjusted the small microphone placed near the wall.

“We’ll begin shortly,” she announced gently.

There was a light murmur of anticipation.

Clara looked toward Peter’s room. The door was still closed.

She tried to steady her breathing.

Then, without meaning to, her eyes shifted further down the corridor.

That was when she saw him.

He stood near the exit sign at the far end. Slightly apart from the others. His jacket was dark, the hood pulled forward enough to cast a shadow over his face. His head was lowered, as though he was avoiding attention.

Clara frowned.

She did not recognize him.

He was not dressed like hospital staff. He was not with any patient. He was not part of the family or the support group.

He was just… there.

Watching.

Her chest tightened.

She tried to look away, but something about him felt wrong. Not loud. Not obvious. Just misplaced.

As if he did not belong in this moment.

She glanced around quickly to see if anyone else had noticed him.

No one had.

Mr. Waters was speaking quietly to Clara’s father. Mrs. Waters was dabbing her eyes gently with a tissue. Isaac was checking his phone.

Clara looked back.

The man had lifted his head slightly.

Though she still could not see his face clearly, she felt it.

That sense of being observed.

Her mind flashed back to the message.

My book was about survival. And here you are, surviving.

A chill moved down her spine.

She stared at him longer now, trying to catch a clearer view. Just one glimpse of his face.

As if sensing her gaze, he shifted.

Then he turned.

Slowly.

And began walking away.

Clara’s breath caught.

Without thinking, she stepped out from the small crowd.

“Clara?” Isaac called quietly.

“I’ll be back,” she whispered, already moving.

She walked quickly at first, then faster, weaving through the chairs and past two nurses who were busy adjusting decorations.

By the time she reached the far end of the corridor, the man had turned the corner near the stairwell.

“Excuse me!” she called softly.

No response.

She rounded the corner.

The hallway beyond was nearly empty.

A cleaning cart stood against the wall. A nurse walked in the opposite direction. But the man…

He was gone.

Clara stopped.

Her heart pounded loudly in her ears.

She looked left.

Nothing.

Right.

Nothing.

The stairwell door was slightly open. She pushed it gently and glanced inside.

Empty.

She stepped back into the corridor, confusion washing over her.

How could someone disappear that quickly?

She stood there for several seconds, replaying the moment in her mind.

The jacket.

The lowered face.

The way he walked when she stared at him.

This was not the investigator.

Daniel Reed did not hide like that. And she had seen his face before.

This was someone else.

But who?

And why here?

“Clara!”

Isaac’s voice echoed faintly from the other end of the hall.

She turned and walked back slowly.

When she returned to the gathered crowd, the ceremony had not yet started. The nurse was still speaking to Mrs. Waters.

“Where did you go?” Isaac asked under his breath.

“I saw someone,” she replied quietly.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

He frowned. “What do you mean you don’t know?”

“There was a man. Standing there. Watching. When I looked at him, he walked away.”

Isaac glanced down the corridor. “Are you sure he wasn’t just a visitor?”

“He didn’t look like one.”

Before Isaac could respond, the nurse raised her voice slightly.

“We are about to begin. Please gather closer.”

The hallway shifted again, everyone focusing toward Peter’s room.

Clara’s pulse refused to slow.

She stepped back slightly, pulling her phone from her bag.

Her fingers moved quickly over the screen.

Daniel, I just saw someone strange at the hospital. At the bell ceremony. He was watching and left when I stared at him. Hooded jacket. Disappeared near the stairs.

She stared at the message before pressing send.

The typing indicator did not appear.

Of course not. He would not respond immediately.

“Clara.”

She looked up.

Peter’s room door had opened.

A nurse stepped out first, smiling. “Please welcome Peter Waters.”

The corridor filled with soft applause.

Peter appeared in the doorway.

For a brief second, everything else faded.

He stood tall, dressed neatly, his expression calm but emotional.

Clara forced herself to smile.

He began walking slowly down the corridor, like an aisle, toward the bell.

Each step steady.

Each step witnessed.

But even as the applause grew louder and pride filled the space, Clara could not shake the feeling that somewhere, just beyond the walls of celebration, a pair of unseen eyes had been watching.

And that whoever the man was, he had not come by accident.
