Chapter 464 Not Even Glancing at Her
Emily furrowed her brow.
This was so annoying.
Why did it feel like she kept running into Sophia and James no matter where she went?
Emily lost interest in browsing further and pointed at a diamond necklace. "This one."
Just then, Sophia squeezed in beside her, grabbing the necklace and cheerfully calling out to James behind her, "James, this necklace is nice. What do you think?"
James noticed Emily too.
His body tensed up for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure and turned to look at Sophia. "Yeah, it's nice," he said casually.
His eyes were on Sophia, but his heart was still with Emily.
Just a quick glance, and he felt like Emily had lost weight again.
Has she been doing poorly lately?
Why would she be doing poorly? Could it be because of him?
Sophia might not be very perceptive about other things, but when it came to James and Emily, she always sensed the tension between them.
Just like now, James was looking at her, but his heart was still with Emily.
She was furious, but she kept smiling.
She walked over to James, affectionately linking her arm with his. "James, can you help me put it on? Please?"
As she spoke, Sophia gently nudged James with her body.
"Mr. Smith, this necklace..." The store clerk couldn't help but speak up.
Because of the previous scandal involving the three of them, many people in Skylight City recognized Emily, James, and Sophia.
The store clerk was no exception.
"This necklace was already chosen by Ms. Johnson," the clerk continued. "Ms. Brown, we have other styles of necklaces. Would you like to take a look?"
Sophia lifted her chin slightly, speaking to the clerk but staring intently at Emily. "But I really like this one."
Sophia thought, 'If I want it, I will get it. Just like with a man. So what if Emily married him? If I like him, I can still take him.'
Emily smirked.
She stepped up to Sophia and snatched the necklace back. "Sorry, I saw it first. Even if you like it, it's not yours."
"Please wrap this up for me," Emily handed the necklace to the clerk, then turned to Sophia with a challenging look.
She used to ignore her, but if Sophia liked to stir up trouble, she didn't mind playing along.
After all, she had nothing better to do. She might as well have some fun.
Sophia's heart trembled as she met Emily's gaze.
She immediately clung tighter to James's arm.
Losing a necklace was one thing, but she couldn't let James be taken away.
With James, she could have anything in the world.
"Ms. Johnson, your necklace," the clerk quickly wrapped it up and handed it to Emily.
Emily reached out to take it and was about to pay when James suddenly stepped forward. "I'll take care of it."
Everyone in the store froze.
The clerk's eyes gleamed with the thrill of gossip. She thought, 'Didn't they say Mr. Smith and Ms. Johnson were getting divorced? Why is Mr. Smith buying a necklace for Ms. Johnson? There must still be feelings between them, right?'
Emily frowned.
What was James doing?
She was buying a necklace, why was he stepping in to pay? Did he have too much money to spend?
Sophia's face paled, filled with hatred. She wanted to hit Emily.
But she was in front of James, and he had said he wanted his wife to be dignified. She couldn't ruin her image in his eyes.
Sophia bit her lip hard, suppressing her anger, then smiled and walked over to James, linking her arm with his, looking at Emily with a condescending air. "Emmy, you're our friend. It's just a necklace, no need to be so formal."
Emily rolled her eyes, and James frowned.
He hadn't meant anything by it; it was just an instinctive reaction.
Now he realized his actions were inappropriate, but Sophia's response made him even more dissatisfied.
But despite everything, he could only handle it as a friend.
"Take it; It's just a necklace," James spoke up.
Emily gave a cold smile. "No need, I have my own money and can afford it. Besides, I'm not used to accepting gifts from other men."
With that, Emily paid for the necklace herself, then took it and walked past James without another glance.
The scene reminded James of their first year of marriage.
Back then, Emily had pestered him to buy her jewelry. She called several times, and he only went once, impatiently paying for it.
Emily had happily linked her arm with his, thanking him, while he, just like she did now, had pushed her away, not even looking at her, and walked off.
Now, the roles were completely reversed.
