Chapter 141 Josephine Found
The ambulance arrived at the police station, and Eva's body was moved into it. Bryce, Bernard and Matilda followed the ambulance to the hospital. Eva was rushed into the hospital, and Bernard followed in. Bryce and Matilda later strode into the hospital in the company of two bodyguards.
"She is dead," the doctor announced after checking Eva.
The news hit Bernard like a baseball bat. She is dead. The words echoed in his mind. He had no feelings towards Eva, but it did break him to hear the doctor say she was dead.
"What happened?" Bryce asked when he walked in with Matilda trailing behind her with two bodyguards.
"She is dead," the words left Bernard's lips as he stood frozen staring at Eva's motionless body on a stretcher a couple of distances away from where he stood, but not so far that he couldn't hear what the doctor said to the officer standing next to Eva's body.
"I am sorry," Bryce said to Bernard.
Eva was already in prison when the whole thing happened, so the police took care of it, and an investigation was launched into the case.
An hour earlier,
Bernard exited the small room after getting Eva to confess. Eva sat back on the chair and watched Bernard walk away. She loves Bernard and is very sad hearing Bernard call her a murderer. She gave Bernard's suggestion a thought and decided to do it, so she could earn Bernard's forgiveness.
An officer strode in a minute after Bernard had left. He pulled out his handcuffs and walked towards Eva. Eva held out her hands, knowing he was there to take her back to her VIP cell.
"I didn't come here to take you back to your cell. I came here to deliver a message to you," the officer whispered to Eva, and she frowned.
The officer placed his hand under the table, removed something and showed it to Eva.
"This is a listening device. Mr Moore and Ms McClean got to know about your boyfriend's little visit. This device was placed under the table. There are no cameras in this room because Mr Bryce Moore wanted a room with no cameras," the officer said to Eva. "But Ms McClean wanted to know what you and your boyfriend talked about. We know your boyfriend knows every detail of what happened. My boss would be in trouble, and so would Susan be in trouble. So this is what is going to happen. I am going to open these cuffs to put them on you. You will grab my gun and first aim at me. Then you shoot yourself," he said with a smile, and Eva gulped.
"And if I don't?" Eva asked, her heart racing against her chest.
"Your boyfriend dies," the officer said, and Eva lowered her head.
Eva reflected on everything she had done. Even if she doesn't do it, they will kill her.
"Do I have your word that Bernard would not be harmed?" Eva asked as a tear dropped from her eyes.
She was regretful now. She had teamed up with Susan to murder two members of the Moore family just to put Angela in prison. Susan had promised her that she would help her with Bernard, and this motivated her to go all out for her. It never occurred to her that Susan was deliberately making her use her account to pay the criminals. Eva's mind shifted to Bernard.
"If you take your life, Bernard will not be harmed. After all, he can't use the information you gave him for anything in your absence," the officer said.
"Okay," Eva said, and tears streamed down her face.
She loved Bernard so much that she didn't want any harm to befall him.
"Good," the officer said and opened the cuffs.
Eva pulled the gun from the officer's gun holder and aimed it at him. The officer raised his hand and took a step back.
"No, don't do it," he screamed, and Eva moved the gun to herself.
She placed the gun on the side of her neck and pulled the trigger. Her hand dropped to the floor, still holding the gun.
The officer quickly called for an ambulance while checking Eva for a pulse. Bernard hurried into the room and found the officer stooping over Eva while talking on the phone.
To the Present
Bernard, Bryce and Matilda left the hospital as there was nothing more to be done.
"They know we came to see Eva. The question here is, how?" Matilda said. "We were with the chief all through," she added. "It only means he is not working alone. I have a feeling the officer who walked into the office is part of them," she informed Bryce.
"We need to expose them," Bryce said. "Eva is dead. Let's publish a news story to clear Angela's name.
"That means we are going to blame Eva for everything?" Matilda asked.
"No, not entirely. Let's make the news first and direct the public comments," Bryce said, and Matilda smiled.
"That is a smart move," Matilda said.
Bernard sat in the car in silence.
"Her death will not be in vain. We will expose them all," Bryce said to comfort Bernard.
"Thank you, but she endangered herself. She allowed herself to be used like that, and that was her punishment for signing a deal with the devil," Bernard said.
"Hmm, no sin goes unpunished," Bryce said.
Back at the Davis home, Angela was feeling better. She had seen Matilda and George but not Bryce. She concluded that Davis came to her rescue because they believed in her innocence. She was sitting on the balcony chatting with Zora and Mrs Anderson.
"So are you going to forgive Bryce?" Mrs Anderson asked and Angela frowned.
"We went our separate ways while I was in prison. I am still hurt he abandoned me when I needed him most," Angela breathed.
"So you will not forgive him?" Mrs Anderson asked.
"I don't know," Angela said.
Bryce and Matilda drove into the garage, and they got out of the car.
"You promised you were going to help me win back Angela," Bryce reminded Matilda.
"Don't worry, Mrs Anderson is working on that. Let's focus on taking out all those who want to harm you and her," Matilda said, and Bryce's phone rang.
"Sir, I have found Ms Josephine. She is at the Moore family house," Martin informed Bryce.
"Your daughter is alive," Bryce said to Matilda, and her heart skipped multiple beats, but this reaction did not escape Bryce's eyes, which were fixated on her.
"I thought she would be happy her daughter is alive," Bryce thought as he stared at Matilda.
