Chapter 112 Why Are You So Slow?
"I want to be alone," Bryce suddenly said to Devon's surprise.
"Son," Devon called out, staring at Bryce, and Bryce suddenly looked okay.
"Please, Dad. Leave," Bryce said sternly.
"Son, you don't look good. How can I leave you alone?" Devon asked, sounding concerned.
"I have lots of employees in this house," Bryce said, and his father shook his head and was about to leave when Bryce stopped him. "Wait, can I have the video?" he asked, and Devon just stared at him briefly before moving his fingers on his phone.
"It's in your email. Bryce, I know it's your first time falling in love with a woman, but you must let her go. She is bad news," Devon said, but Bryce remained silent.
Devon walked out of the house, leaving Bryce in the living room.
Meanwhile, at the police headquarters, James and Mr Anderson were led to an office by a lady. She knocked and entered with James and Mr Anderson trailing behind her.
"Sir," the lady said, and the man behind the desk, who was going through some papers, raised his head.
"Mr Anderson," the man said, standing to his feet upon seeing Mr Anderson. He dismissed the lady with a hand gesture.
Mr Anderson walked towards the man and hugged him. James stood on the side just smiling at the two gentlemen engaged each other like old school buddies meeting again after a long time.
"Wow, Darren, long time," Mr Anderson said, and the man smiled.
"Yeah, when did you move back to New York?" Darren asked, offering them a seat.
"I never left New York after school," Mr Anderson said, and Darren was taken aback by the statement. "This is James," he added, his voice void of the energy he had earlier.
"Wait, what happened to the scholarship you got to further your education in.........," Darren said, trying to remember the country, but Mr Anderson interrupted.
"It was fake," Mr Anderson replied, but immediately recalled why he never left.
It was the time Mr Moore came up with the funds to invest in the business idea. He had thought that growing the business was better than going through another year of education. A decision he regrets to date. He would not be in this mess if he had just left.
"Fake?" Darren repeated, surprised. "That is strange because I heard about that scholarship, and it didn't look fake," he added.
"Scammers upgraded," Mr Anderson said. "Anyway, I came here because I needed your help?" he quickly added, changing the subject.
"Okay," Darren said, ready to hear what Mr Anderson needed help with.
Back at Bryce's apartment, Bryce was all dressed in a black suit and heading out of the apartment with Marcus trailing behind him. Marcus opened the back seat door for Bryce, but Bryce stopped and stared at Marcus for a while.
"Sir, you forgot something?" Marcus asked, seeing that Bryce was just standing there.
"Get Martin to join us," Bryce said and got into the car.
"Yes, sir," Marcus said and sent a message from his phone to Martin.
In less than five minutes, Martin joined Marcus in the front seat, and the car soon went out of the compound.
"We are going to the police station first and from there, to the office," Bryce instructed from the back seat.
"Yes, sir," Marcus replied and headed for the police station.
Bryce assigned Martin to drive Angela. So for some time, he went out with just Marcus. Today, he decided Martin should come along. Martin and Marcus are the guards he trusts. He mostly assigned them to private investigation but he used Marcus more when it came to that.
After a couple of minutes' drive, they arrived at the police station. Bryce got out of the car in the company of his two guards, and they all walked into the station.
"Wait here," Bryce said to them, and he went in to see the chief.
Bryce stepped out of the chief's office with an officer, and they both went towards the withholding cell. The officer opened the cell for Bryce, and Bryce entered.
"Call me when you are done," the officer said to Bryce after locking the cell, and he moved away, finding a place to stand and wait till Bryce was done.
Inside the cell, Angela was lying on the bed, curled up like a shrimp with her back facing the locked gate. She did not even move when the cell gate was opened and locked again. Bryce stood there staring at her. All the hurt mixed with the anger he felt after watching the video went out the window upon seeing Angela. He didn't even know what to feel.
Angela was in the same clothes she had on when she was arrested, but they were dirty and looked like rags now. The sleeves were torn, and her shoulder was bruised. Her hair was dishevelled.
"Angela!" Bryce called out to her, and that was when she turned around to face him.
She sat up on the bed, seeing it was Bryce. Bryce's heart ached when he saw her face. There were blood stains across her hairline. Her cheekbone was bruised too.
"What did they do to you?" Bryce asked and got closer to her, but Angela broke down.
"I didn't do it," Angela said in tears, and Bryce hugged her.
He had come there to question her about the video, but the state he saw her in broke him. Even if she was guilty, he didn't expect them to do this to her because of her condition. She was pregnant.
"I want to believe you, but I need you to be honest with me," Bryce said, pulling away from the hug. "Did my sister provoke you?" he asked, trying to find an explanation as to why Angela would stab his sister like that.
"No, she didn't. She came to talk to me and wanted me to call you. She told me you were worried about me. I promised her I was going to call you, and she left. Next, I saw her lying on the ground from where I stood on the balcony. I quickly come out of the building to check on her. She was lying in a pool of blood. I started feeling dizzy, and darkness covered me," Angela narrated. "I don't know what happened to her. She was fine when she left," she added in tears.
"I believe you," Bryce said and hugged her.
Bryce watched the video once, but recalling what he had seen, he was beginning to think something was off with the video. He decided not to ask Angela about the video until he had authenticated it. For now, he just wants to hold on to that strong feeling that Angela was innocent.
Outside, Marcus and Martin were standing right at the entrance of the station, waiting for Bryce. Marcus's phone rang, and he quickly retrieved it from his pocket. Seeing the unknown number flashed on his screen, he excused himself to answer the call.
"Hello," Marcus said after finding a safe place to answer the call.
"You idiot, last night was supposed to be my night. Why did you mess it up?" came Susan's voice.
"I couldn't risk getting caught," Marcus replied. "He is even going to question me about it today," he added.
"Why are you so slow?" Susan asked. "Are you not an employee? Couldn't you have gone with the excuse that you were just following orders from his fiancée and tell him his father asked you to follow my orders?" she questioned.
"Everything happened so fast, I couldn't think straight," Marcus replied.
"I will give you a chance to redeem yourself," Susan said. "I must sleep with Bryce. And since you messed up my plan, you are going to make that happen. If you don't, you can prepare for your mother's funeral," she threatened.
"Please, don't harm her. I will do anything you want," Marcus pleaded. " I have some information for you," he said.
"Go on?" Susan said.
"He came to see her. We are at the police station," Marcus informed Susan, and she knew what he meant.
"It only means he doesn't believe anything said about her," Susan said. "The information I asked you not to give to him," she reminded him. "I want you to change that content and make sure it makes Angela guilty and give it to him," she said. "He may not believe the news, but he will believe the findings from your secret investigation," she added.
"Yes, ma'am," Marcus replied, and the call came to an end.
