Chapter 87 Big Decision
Few months later…
After Michael started working at Phil’s company, Smith Real Estate, things changed greatly between them. What began as a simple employer–employee relationship slowly grew into a strong friendship.
Phil noticed Michael's dedication, he was always first to resume work in the morning, always respectful to everyone, and very serious about his duties. He handled every project with care and never complained, even when the work was stressful.
Day by day, Phil began to trust him more. Michael did not just work hard; he also showed loyalty and honesty. Whenever there was a problem at a construction site, Michael would stay back late to fix it. When workers argued, he settled issues peacefully. Phil watched all of this quietly, and deep inside, he became convinced that Michael was not just a good worker but a dependable man, a friend he had always wanted.
One evening, after finishing some files in his office, Phil leaned back in his chair and sighed thoughtfully.
"Michael is truly reliable," he murmured to himself. "Someone like him should not remain in a small position forever."
The thought stayed in his mind for days. Finally, he made a firm decision. He would promote Michael to the position of Co-CEO. It's the right thing to do, considering how he had worked so hard for it.
He believed Michael deserved it and that the company would grow even better with him in that role.
However, Phil knew such a decision could not be taken lightly. The company originally belonged to his father, so out of respect, he decided to visit him and explain everything first.
That weekend, Phil drove to his father’s house. The large family house stood tall and quiet, just as he remembered from childhood. As he walked into the living room, he saw his younger brother, Richard, sitting comfortably on the couch, scrolling through his phone.
Richard looked up and smiled faintly. "Oh, Phil. You’re here."
Phil nodded. "Yes. I came to see Father. Is he home?"
"He’s in his study," Richard replied. "But you can tell me first if it’s about the company."
Phil hesitated for a moment, then sat down opposite him. "Actually, it is about the company." Though his brother had never shown any interest in the affairs of the company, that does not mean it's not his also.
Richard raised a brow curiously. "What is it this time?"
Phil took a deep breath. "I want to make Michael the Co-CEO of Smith Real Estate."
Richard’s expression immediately changed from calm to surprised. "What? Co-CEO? That’s a very big decision, Phil."
Just then, their father walked into the living room, having overheard the last part of the conversation. He looked serious as he sat down.
"I heard what you said," his father spoke slowly. "Why do you want to give such a high position to an outsider?"
Phil remained calm but firm. "Father, Michael is not just an outsider. He is hardworking, honest, and very trustworthy. In the past few months, he has proven himself again and again. The company has even improved because of his dedication."
His father frowned slightly. "Hard work alone is not enough. A company is not a small business you can experiment with."
Richard nodded in agreement. "Exactly. What if he changes after getting power? Positions like that can change people."
Phil met their eyes, his firm and confident. "I understand your concerns. But the position is not eternal. If Michael ever misbehaves or disappoints us, we can always remove him from the position. Nothing is permanent."
The room fell silent for a moment as his words sank in.
Richard leaned back on the couch and folded his arms, thinking carefully. After a while, he sighed.
"Well… it’s your decision after all," he said calmly. "I don’t have any intention of taking over the company anyway. I already have my own company to run. So whatever you want to do with Father’s company, you’re free to do it."
Their father looked at Richard, then back at Phil. Though he was still unsure, he could see the determination in Phil’s eyes. He finally spoke in a quieter tone.
"If you are truly confident in him, then the responsibility will be yours."
Phil nodded respectfully. "I understand, Father. And I assure you, I will not make a careless decision."
Deep inside, Phil felt relieved. He had defended his decision strongly, and now, there was nothing left to stop him from officially making Michael the Co-CEO.
