Chapter 59 Parents Day
“I’m kinda scared, honestly,” Beth admits to looking over her outfit again.
“I can tell.”
She turns to glare at me. “Aren’t you scared? You’re the one lying to your parents.” She’s got me there.
“Fine, I am, but there is nothing I can do at this point.” I lay back on the bed, my own fear making me feel sick.
It’s parents’ day at the camp today. This will be the first time in over a month we’ve seen even a glimpse of our parents, so of course, I am fearful of being around them again. Mainly because of everything that has happened over the last month. And the fact that they are meeting Alec. But it’s not a great meeting because we’re going to be lying to them right off the bat. This whole day is going to be a shit show. I mean, even if it goes as well as it possibly could, it is still going to be a circus keeping everything up.
“Remember, no mention of Kai at all.” Beth gives me a look.
“Who is Kai?” I tease, trying to lighten our moods. But it doens’t do much to help. Alec should be showing up any minute. We don’t want him coming out of the woods when my parents are here.
“Gosh, I don’t think I’ve ever been this nervous to see my mom.” She whines.
“I don’t think I have ever been either.”
The rest of our cabin is empty, the other girls still at breakfast. The families are supposed to arrive in thirty minutes, giving everyone time to get ready and eat, but Beth and I were too stressed to eat. The door opens, and I immediately recognize the sound of his footsteps. I get out of the bed before he can walk two full steps into the room.
“I’m so glad you’re here.” I hug him, already feeling a little better.
“And now I’m left on my own.” Beth groans.
“We won’t abandon you. I have strict orders from Anneliese.” He tells her. He’s not wrong. I did make him swear that we wouldn’t separate from Beth unless forced to.
“How’s Kyson?” She already looks happier at just the thought of him.
Alec swears they aren’t mates; he says it’s just ‘young love’. He’s such an old person sometimes.
“He’s good, he’s working at the shop today.” Kyson works at his dad’s mechanic shop, which I’ve heard he has quite a skill for.
“I wish I could be there with him instead of dealing with this.” She flops onto my bed.
I pull out of Alec’s arms, going to join her. He takes a seat at one of the chairs closest to us.
“Aren’t you excited to see your parents?” He asks, trying to help.
“I mean, yes, but I don’t want them to know everything we’ve done this summer.”
“Yeah, we’ll both get in a lot of trouble if they hear about even half of it,” I add.
“Oh, okay, I understand well my lips will be sealed. I promise.”
Beth sits up halfway, looking at him. “They better be, I will put your fighting skills to the test if not.”
He glances at me, noting the humor on my face at the situation. “I give you full permission to teach me a lesson if I say something.”
She lies back on the bed our legs dangling off the side. It’s like this for the next twenty minutes, us all talking back and forth; we don’t stop until we hear a vehicle on the gravel, further away. I sit up in the bed so quickly that I accidentally hit my head on the bunk above us.
“Oh my gosh, are you okay?” Alec gets up, standing in front of me, his hand on my arm as he frantically looks me over.
I have a hand on my forehead, wincing at the pain. And Beth is just laughing her ass off.
“I’m glad I could make you happy,” I grumble at her, getting off the bed.
He’s still looking over my head, which I’m sure a large knot will be present in a few hours.
“Just because you hear gravel doesn’t necessarily mean the parents are here,” Beth says, catching her breath from her laughing fit.
As though he heard her, Tim’s voice comes over the intercom. “Campers, today’s the day you’ve all been waiting for! Parents are starting to arrive now. Come out to greet yours!”
Her face falls. “Shit.” I almost want to laugh at her, but I’m in the same boat.
Now or never, I guess. Alec and I’s hands intertwine tightly as we go to the front of the cabin. It looks a bit like mayhem out here. Parents greet their kids, while some kids stand around waiting. We decide to stay on the porch, not wanting to get caught up in the crowd.
“Oh my gosh, there are my parents.” She points to a woman and a man in their fifties walking towards us.
I can tell she’s related to them. She looks like a crazy mix of both of them. She smiles, waving at them. Their faces light up as soon as they see her walking faster to the cabin.
“Honey, how are you?” Her mom asks, coming onto the porch, pulling her into a tight hug. Her dad stands to the side, waiting until she lets her go to hug her as well. Her mom turns her attention to us while they hug.
“Hi, I’m Beth’s mom, Louise.” She smiles sweetly at us.
“Hi, I’m Anna, and this is my boyfriend, Alec.” She looks so nice. Definitely not as outspoken as Beth.
“It’s so nice to meet you. Beth told me you two have been friends since the first day.”
“Yes, your daughter is my best friend. She’s made my summer wonderful.” She looks happy to hear my words.
“I’m this one’s dad, John, but you can call me the hot dad.” Her dad’s surprisingly loud voice adds to the conversation. Beth pinches his arm with a bright smile. I can see where she got her personality from.
“I’m Anna, this is Alec.” I introduce us again.
“It’s nice to meet the person who’s been making my little girl happy.”
She must have told them a lot about me during their scheduled phone calls. I never got to talk to mine, since they were always busy when I had the chance.
“She’s been making my summer wonderful, so it’s nice to meet the parents that made her who she is.” He looks beyond happy with my kind words.
“You don’t room with them, do you?” John puts on a false threatening look, asking Alec.
“No sir, I do not. I’m her boyfriend here to meet the parents.” He answers smoothly.
I can see her dad already liking him. I should’ve guessed he’d be good with parents. Hopefully, it’ll be the same with mine.
