Chapter 16: The Coming Storm

Chapter 16: The Coming Storm
Dawn arrived pale and cold, like a premonition of what Sarai felt in her heart. She couldn’t stop thinking about her conversation with David, about the promises he had made to her, and the reality that awaited her around every corner. Her mind was a whirlwind of conflicting emotions: love, fear, uncertainty, and a determination she was just beginning to understand.

As she got ready to leave, the sound of the phone interrupted the morning silence. It was a message from her mother—brief, with few words, but filled with the fragility that only illness could bring.

“Sarai, don’t forget the doctor’s appointment today. It’s important.”

She sighed, trying to mask the anxiety she felt. Her mother’s health was the main reason for everything—the driving force behind decisions she never would have imagined making. That contract with David, that arranged marriage, wasn’t just a piece of paper—it was a lifeline, a hope to keep her mother alive.

When she arrived at the hospital, the tension was palpable. The nurse greeted her with a tired smile, but Sarai knew every day was a battle for her mother. The doctor’s words, though kind, were firm: her mother needed constant care, treatment that would be expensive and far beyond what Sarai could afford on her own.

She left the hospital with a heavy heart, but no time to wallow. She had to think about her future, about David, about the contract they would sign, and everything it implied. She knew the agreement was more than a legal formality—it was the beginning of a new life, full of challenges she could barely begin to imagine.

When she returned home, she found Erick in the living room, as always, with that indifferent look on his face and a bill in his hand. She couldn’t hold back the frustration.

—Another debt? —Sarai said sharply—. Can’t you do something to fix this?

Erick looked at her with disdain, not bothering to answer. He knew her words had no effect, and he preferred to remain in his world of gambling and escapism.

Sarai took a deep breath, trying not to lose her composure. She had more important things to face and couldn’t let herself be dragged down by her brother’s irresponsibility.

That afternoon, she received an unexpected call—it was David. His voice on the other end of the phone was soft, but firm.

—I need to see you, Sarai. There’s something we need to talk about face-to-face.

She hesitated for a moment, but the urgency in his tone convinced her. They agreed to meet at a quiet café, away from prying eyes and shadows of the past.

When she arrived, David was already there. His expression was serious, almost worried, and that only increased the tension she felt.

—I’ve been thinking —he began—. About everything that surrounds us, what this marriage means, and what I want for us.

Sarai looked at him, trying to understand what he was feeling.

—I know my family won’t accept this easily —David continued—. My mother is… difficult. And my brothers, the same. But I want you to know that I’m not willing to give in to them if it means losing you.

His words were a balm for Sarai, but also a reminder of the difficult road ahead.

—And you? —she asked, her voice trembling—. Are you sure this is what you want?

David nodded, with a conviction that made her tremble.

—More than anything in the world. But it won’t be easy. We’ll have to fight against prejudice, against expectations, against everything they try to use to tear us apart.

Sarai felt a mix of fear and hope. The future was uncertain, but now she knew she wouldn’t face it alone.

Their conversation stretched on for hours, filled with whispers and knowing glances, until night began to fall. When they said goodbye, they both knew this was only a pause before a much greater battle.

Back home, Sarai sat in front of the mirror, looking at her reflection with a mix of sadness and determination. No matter how hard it would be, she was ready to fight for her happiness, for her love, and for the future she dreamed of.

But she knew the storm was about to break, and only together could they withstand its fury.

The storm inside Sarai did not relent. Every word from David had ignited a flame of hope within her, but also reignited her deepest fears. She knew the road wouldn’t be easy, that opposition from both her family and his would rise like an almost impassable wall. Yet David’s determination to fight for her gave her strength to move forward.

That night, as the house was shrouded in an uneasy silence, Sarai found herself sitting at the edge of her bed, the contract folded in her hands. Her mother slept in the next room, unaware of the decisions already reshaping the family’s destiny.

—Am I doing the right thing? —she asked in a whisper, her heart aching—. Is it worth sacrificing so much, even myself, to save her?

The weight of responsibility was almost unbearable. She knew that to David, this marriage wasn’t just an agreement—there was sincere commitment behind his words. But for her, doubts still lingered.

She stood and walked to the window, staring at the flickering lights of the city. Just then, her phone vibrated on the nightstand. It was a message from Erick.

“I need to talk to you. It’s important.”

A shiver ran down her spine. Erick rarely showed concern for anything other than himself. What could he possibly want now?

She decided to ignore him, but the messages kept coming. Eventually, she replied simply:

—What is it?

The answer came quickly:

“I can’t keep living like this, Sarai. I need your help.”

She felt a mix of frustration and worry. Despite everything, he was still her younger brother, and that responsibility would never go away. But now, more than ever, her priority was taking care of her mother and preparing her future with David.

The next day, the doctor’s appointment reminded her once again of how fragile their reality was. The doctor was clear: without expensive treatment and specialized care, her mother’s condition could rapidly decline.

Sarai knew that was the reason she’d signed the contract with David, but she was also aware that this union had grown beyond finances. In him, she had found a light in the darkness—someone who saw her as more than just an obligation.

When David came to see her later that day, he noticed the exhaustion and determination in her eyes that mirrored his own feelings. Without many words, he took her hand and led her somewhere they could be alone, far from noise and worry.

—I want you to know —he said firmly— that you’re not just an agreement to me. You’re the person I want by my side, even if the world stands against us.

Sarai felt her heart pounding. For the first time, her doubts gave way—if only a little—to trust.

—Then let’s fight together —she replied with a timid but sincere smile—. No matter what they say or do. If we stand together, nothing can tear us apart.

They remained silent, sharing that moment of calm before the storm they both knew was coming.

But outside their refuge, the world kept turning, and with it, the complications that would test their love—and their strength.
