Chapter 50

Steffan left Elara unsatisfied with the little information he got from her. He had hoped to get enough from her considering deposition in Moonshadow.

Steffan saw a company of drinking buddies, and he decided to join them and make merry with them.

They all seemed happy, while some played games, there was a musician in their midst who sang alongside his drum to soothe the night.

Some were busy having a nice time with women. It was such a lively environment for Steffan and then, he sat and joined them.

Meanwhile, the dimly lit corner of the environment held a whispered atmosphere as Steffan, with an air of calculated indifference, sat across from an old woman, Paula.

She was silent all through, and it got the attention of Steffan. Steffan moved closer to her and started a conversation he didn't even know words to start with.

The lingering scent of aged spirits and the shadows that embraced them seemed to weave an unspoken understanding between the two figures, their alliance forged in the intricate dance of Moonshadow's intrigues.

"Hello!" Steffan began. "May I sit?" his brow raised.

Paula, her eyes reflecting the mystery that defined her existence in the city's shadows, regarded Steffan with a measured gaze.

She did not acknowledge his greetings, she said.

"Steffan you seek knowledge, and knowledge in Moonshadow often comes at a price. What makes you think I will share the details of the previous trial with you?"

Steffan was shocked and stupefied, "How did she know I was going to ask her?" he questioned himself.

Steffan leaned back, and a sly smile played on his lips. "Because you know, that information is a currency in Moonshadow, and I am prepared to pay the price."

Paula's lips curled into a half-smile, the shadows focus attention on the mysterious charm that surrounded her. "Very well, Steffan. Let's give way to the currency of information."

Steffan signaled to a man, a silent cue for another round of drinks. As the glasses were refilled, Paula began to recount the tale of Moonshadow's trials, her voice a low murmur that resonated with the charm of the city.

"The night of the trial began with an ethereal glow in the temple grounds," Paula began, her eyes distant as if reliving the events. "The then recruits, cloaked in the anticipation of the unknown, gathered beneath the watchful eyes of the Alpha King."

Steffan leaned forward with intent interest, he urged her to continue. "And what task did the Alpha King bestow upon them?"

Paula's gaze locked onto Steffan's. "The task was both simple and profound. Scattered throughout Moonshadow were mystical tombstones, an ancient relics that held the essence of the city's power. The recruits' mission was to retrieve these markers and return them to the temple grounds."

Steffan, absorbing the information, raised an eyebrow. "Tombstones, just as the whispers suggested. And the team that retrieved the most earned the honour of joining the closest pack to the Alpha King?"

Paula nodded. "Precisely. Moonshadow's power, refined into ancient relics, became the coveted keys to the inner circles of influence."

Steffan, ever the strategist, contemplated the implications. "And which team emerged victorious? Who now holds the favour of the Alpha King?"

Paula's eyes glittered with a mix of intrigue and calculation. "The team that proved triumphant was Team Phoenix, led by a recruit named Rhea. Their strategy was impeccable, blending strength, agility, and a keen understanding of Moonshadow's hidden currents."

A glint of admiration could be seen in his eyes, raising his glass in a silent toast. "To Team Phoenix and the art of mastering Moonshadow's trials."

Paula returned the gesture, and continued.

"The Alpha King, with an air of authority that only he can muster, announced their victory. Rhea, the leader of Team Phoenix, earned the privilege of joining the closest pack to the Alpha King, her fate forever intertwined with the enigmatic leader's decisions, Elara was part of this team."

Steffan was intrigued by the unfolding narrative, probed further. "Really? Elara? And what of the other teams? Those who fell short in the intricate dance of the trials."

Paula's expression grew more guarded. "The fates of the other teams varied. Some showcased remarkable prowess but failed to secure enough markers. Others faced unexpected challenges, navigating the treacherous currents of Moonshadow's trials with varying degrees of success."

Steffan had a hint of curiosity in his eyes, pressed on. "And did the Alpha King reveal the nature of the tombstones? The secrets they hold?"

Paula shook her head. "The Alpha King, as is his mystifying nature, kept the true nature of the tombstones veiled. Their power, their purpose, and the secrets they hold remain known only to him. Moonshadow, after all, is a city of mysteries, and the Alpha King is its guardian."

As the conversation continued, the server discreetly refilled their glasses, the exchange of information unfolding like a delicate dance.

Moonshadow, with its secrets and shifting allegiances, seemed to cast its spell upon the clandestine gathering.

"And now, Steffan," Paula said, her voice dropping to a collusive whisper, "you have the knowledge you sought. But beware, for in Moonshadow, knowledge is both a shield and a sword. The dance of shadows has many partners, and the steps you take may shape the destinies that intertwine with your own."

Steffan had a pensive expression on his face, acknowledging the truth in Paula's words.

"I appreciate your candour, Paula. Knowledge, as you rightly said, is a double-edged blade. Now, our alliance must come to an end. You mustn't be seen with me any longer."

Paula, her gaze lingering on Steffan for a moment, and she nodded in understanding. The alliances formed in Moonshadow's shadows were fleeting, delicate threads that could unravel with the slightest breeze.

As Steffan dissolved into the labyrinthine passages, the city held its breath, and the secrets of the night whispered through the shadows.

Paula was now left alone in the dim-lit corner, and Steffan, now armed with additional knowledge of the trials, prepared to navigate the currents of the city's intrigue.

The shadows, ever watchful, held their secrets close, and the dance continued in the veiled heart of Moonshadow.
