Chapter 44

Meanwhile, before Luka and Diana left the hospital, Luka had gone to settle the bills leaving Mr. Varane and Diana behind.

Mr. Varane took some minutes to study her look. "I can sense you are doing well, but I still don't think you are safe staying alone. Would you like to come with me?" he asked.

With a bright smile, Diana's voice came soothing. "Thank you, Mr. Varane. You do not need to worry because I now live with Luka. He took me to his house the last time we visited you."

With widened eyes Mr. Varane was surprised to hear that. He hadn't taught that could ever be possible.

"Really?" he inquired.

"Yes, Luka has been nice towards me. And he's promised to help me discover my inner abilities." Diana said, she sounded sure.

Mr. Varane was pleased and happy, he had this personal conviction that Luka will protect and make sure Diana is safe from any threat or danger.

"Amazing! What can I say? I mean, Luka is the alpha and I always trust him to do what's right."

Mr. Varane turned away from Diana and glanced at the room for the last time.

"I had spent so much time here that I was beginning to feel too comfortable on that sick bed." Mr. Varane said as he turned away from the bedside.

Diana moved closer to where he was standing, with her left hand placed on his shoulder. "What does it matter? I am happy you are finally leaving in a full state of mind and health."

"Tell me, it's how many days now?" he gazed at her and asked, hoping she would give an accurate number.

Dian shrugged, 'I have no idea, I stopped counting from the second night."

Mr. Varane felt a bit disappointed, which was heard in his voice. "How I wish I knew."

In no time, they found themselves on the passageway that led to the reception. Mr. Varane's mind drifted to Meera and wanted to know if Diana was able to reach her.

He faced Diana and asked, his voice tinged with curiosity. "Diana, I meant to ask after Meera before we left the ward." He continued, "I could remember you left hurriedly the last time you came, were you able to see her and how is she doing?"

"Oh that, we had to rush down to where she was. And she was with her sister Isabella." Diana responded.

"Her sister?" Mr. Varane asked, his brow furrowed.

Diana stopped walking and stared at him. "You don't know she has a sister?"

Mr. Varane's emotions mixed with expectation and disappointment. "Yes, I don't. She never mentioned any Isabella to me."

"Or you were never around to discuss normal and pressing matters with her." Diana said in defense of Meera.

"I admit I can be unavailable, but where and how is she, Diana?" Mr. Varane gave in to what Diana said but he needs to know more about Meera.

With a sigh, Diana took her time to explain in detail without hiding anything behind from Mr. Varane. She also mentioned the Eclipse Key and how Luka interfered and made them leave Neonhaven from seemingly threats.

Mr. Varane listened attentively and he nodded, testifying that he was following and understood what she was saying.

Finally, the long walk to the reception ended. They moved closer to where Luka was and after everything needed was done, the trio made their way to the entrance.

After a heartfelt farewell, Luka and Diana got into the car and drove off leaving Mr. Varane to his own fate.

For another thirty minutes, Mr. Varane stood and strategized what his next move was to be like. He contemplated on what to do and where to go at the moment.

However, after thinking back and forth, he decided to go to his office. Where the outburst began between Steffan and some of his men.

Without waiting another second, he boarded a vehicle and rode straight down to his office.

Memory of how it all happened swept through Mr. Varane's mind as he stood before the remnants of the building.

The scorched walls and shattered windows seemed to echo the chaos that had unfolded, a stark reminder of the violent confrontation with Steffan and his men.

Taking a deep breath, Mr. Varane entered the damaged building, the air was heavy with the scent of burnt wood and persisted tension.

The office, once a bustling hub of business, now lay in ruins. His eyes scanned the room, searching for any clues amidst the ruin.

As he moved through the destruction, his gaze fell upon a framed photograph of his family that was hung at the reception, now cracked but still holding the smiles frozen in time.

The moment Mr. Varane stepped into the remnants of his once-thriving office, a flash of memory surged through him.

The images of Steffan and his gruesome men storming into the building, the clash of steel against steel, gun against gun, and the desperate fight to protect Diana, it all played out in his mind like a haunting film.

He felt a mixture of sorrow and rage, an overwhelming emotion that gripped his entire being.

The building bore the scars of the fierce battle. Broken glass crunched beneath Mr. Varane's shoes as he moved through the entrance.

The reception area, once decorated with sleek furniture and vibrant artwork, now lay in disarray. Though the air still carried the acrid scent of burnt wood and lingering strain.

As he walked further into the wreckage, Mr. Varane couldn't help but survey the devastation. The walls, once adorned with accolades and framed photographs, were now marred by scorch marks and dents from the violent struggle.

The reception desk, where his secretary had greeted clients with a warm smile, now lay overturned and broken.

His gaze changed course to the conference room, where important decisions had been made.

The table that was once polished and gleaming, now bore the scars of a fierce confrontation, deep scratches and fragments told the tale of a struggle that had unfolded within those very walls.

Mr. Varane's heart sank further as he moved toward his personal workspace. The door to his office, a place that held cherished memories and countless hours of hard work, stood ajar.

With a heavy sigh, Mr. Varane pushed it open, revealing a scene of utter wreckage.

The office, once an organized sanctuary of productivity, was now a chaotic mess. Shattered glass from the broken windows littered the floor like a cruel mosaic.

However, the remnants of his favourite computer, a cutting-edge machine that had been his loyal companion through countless projects, lay in pieces.

At that instance, fury rushed within him with an overflow of emotions that threatened to overwhelm.

His jaw clenched, and his fists tightened as he surveyed the wreckage. The weight of the situation pressed down on him, but amidst the ruins, a whiff of determination flickered in his eyes.

Mr. Varane moved with purpose, he scanned the scrap for anything fixable. Amidst the broken pieces of technology and furniture, he spotted a drawer from his desk, miraculously intact.

Opening it, he found a few undamaged documents, client contracts, blueprints, and a small, locked box.

With a sense of urgency, Mr. Varane picked up the box. The metallic clink of the lock echoed in the room as he carefully opened it.

After opening, he found a collection of family photographs, a small heirloom from his grandfather, and a USB drive.

The drive held encrypted files, a digital vault of information that had prevailed in the physical assault on his office. The realization brought a hint of relief to Mr. Varane.

Armed with this unexpected discovery, Mr. Varane's anger transformed into a fierce will.

He knew that, amidst the chaos, there was still a chance to uncover the truth. Closing the box, he tucked it under his arm and surveyed the wreckage once more.
