Chapter 65 The Sentinel Awakens

Chapter 65 The Sentinel Awakens
Luna’s POV

The Sentinel stepped fully out of the courthouse doorway and stones cracked under its weight and for a moment, and the entire world seemed to hold its breath, because It was enormous…easily twice the height of the constructs we had been fighting. Its body was made of layered metal plates that shifted slightly with every movement, it was glowing with twisted silver veins that pulsed like a heartbeat.

And its eyes… were locked on me, it was not Kai and not Selene.

It was me.

Kai slowly took a step closer to my side. “Okay,” he whispered under his breath, “I officially hate that thing.”

The Sentinel tilted its head, with its mechanical joints grinding softly, and the movement felt… deliberate. Like it was studying me.

Selene stood calmly on the courthouse steps behind it, with her arms folded.
“Fascinating,” she said softly.

I tore my gaze away from the machine and glared at her. “You’re going to destroy the whole town just to test me?”

Selene’s amber eyes flickered with amusement. “You misunderstand me, Luna.”

She gestured lightly toward the Sentinel. “The system created it.”

“That’s not true,” I snapped. “You’re controlling it!”

“Guiding it,” she corrected calmly. “There is a difference.”

The Sentinel suddenly moved fast, in fact faster than something that size had any right to move.

“Kai!” I screamed.

He grabbed my arm and pulled me sideways just as the Sentinel’s massive arm slammed into the ground where we’d been standing.

The impact exploded the pavement and hunks of concrete flew through the air. I rolled across the ground and pushed myself up just in time to see Kai duck under another swing of the Sentinel’s arm.

“Luna!” he shouted. “Any ideas?!”

My heart pounded. Then the anchor power inside me flared again, and reacting to the Sentinel’s presence. The energy from the guardian core surged through my chest like a rising tide.

But something was wrong, because the Sentinel was connected to the system. I could feel it, like a knot in the network.
If I attacked it directly, the backlash could destabilize the core even more.
Selene knew that. Of course she did.

“Problem, Luna?” her voice called down from the steps. But i ignored her.

The Sentinel raised its arm again, with silver energy gathering along its metal veins. Then I suddenly understood. “Kai!” I shouted. “Don’t let it hit the ground again!”

“Working on it!” he yelled back, barely dodging another strike. Then the Sentinel’s arm came down again… But this time I reacted first.
I threw both hands forward.

Silver energy surged out of me in a concentrated burst, striking the Sentinel’s arm mid-swing. The blast didn’t destroy it. But it redirected the strike and the arm slammed into the courthouse wall instead of the ground. The stone shattered and the Sentinel paused, and was recalculating.

Kai looked at me, surprised. “Okay… that’s new.”

“It’s linked to the network,” I said quickly. “If it destabilizes the ground again, the courthouse node could collapse.”

Kai’s eyes widened. “So we’re fighting a giant robot we can’t actually break?”

“Pretty much.” I replied.

“Fantastic.” He said excitedly. Then the Sentinel turned its glowing eyes back to me, and then it stepped forward again. The ground trembled under its weight.
Selene leaned slightly against the courthouse railing, watching like someone observing an experiment. “Your instincts are improving,” she said. “You’re beginning to understand the system.”

I gritted my teeth. “I don’t need your approval.”

“No,” she said calmly. “But you do need my knowledge.”

The Sentinel lunged again and this time it swung both arms. “Kai!” I screamed

We split in opposite directions. One of the arms crashed into a parked car, sending it flipping across the street like a toy. The other slammed into the courthouse steps, cracking them down the center and the Sentinel straightened, and then its chest began to glow.

I felt my stomach dropped. “Oh no…”

Kai saw it too. “That doesn’t look good.” He said.

Energy gathered inside the Sentinel’s core, it was brighter and brighter, and building pressure like a storm trapped inside metal.

Selene’s voice carried down the steps. “Careful, Luna.” The glow intensified.
“That one will hurt.” She added.

I felt the guardian core react instantly, then Its pulse slammed into my chest like a warning. If that energy discharged….

The courthouse node would overload and the cracks in the sky would widen again. And the barrier protecting the town could collapse entirely.
“Kai, run!” I shouted.

But he didn’t move. Instead he looked at me. “You’ve got something in mind, don’t you?”

The Sentinel’s chest glowed brighter and the energy was seconds from releasing. I inhaled slowly. Then I stepped forward.

“Luna, what are you doing?” Kai asked.

“I’m taking control.” I replied.

The anchor power inside me roared to life, as silver light exploded outward from my body, rippling through the air like shockwaves, because for the first time since this battle began, I didn’t fight the network.

I embraced it. The guardian core responded instantly.
I could feel every node, every connection and every pulse of energy running under Crescent Valley.

The Sentinel’s power source appeared in my mind like a burning star inside the system, and Selene’s interference wrapped around it like chains.
I pushed hard and the Sentinel suddenly froze, with Its glowing chest flickered. Kai stared. “Uh… Luna?”

Sweat ran down my face as the pressure built inside my skull. Selene straightened on the courthouse steps and for the first time since she arrived…She looked surprised. “Well,” she murmured softly. “That’s
unexpected.”

I clenched my fists and the Sentinel’s glowing core dimmed slightly as I forced my influence deeper into the network. But Selene pushed back immediately and the system trembled between us.

Energy crackled violently in the air and the Sentinel’s body shook as two competing commands fought for control. Selene’s voice was quieter now.
“But you’re still not strong enough.”

The pressure inside my chest spiked and the Sentinel’s core suddenly flared again. This time Selene had reinforced her control. My knees nearly buckled, but Kai caught my shoulder.

“Hey,” he said urgently. “You don’t have to do this alone.”

I looked at him, and then at the Sentinel, and then at Selene. And something inside me shifted. The anchor power wasn’t just about control.
It was about connection.
“Kai,” I said quietly.

“Yeah?” he replied instantly.

“I need you to trust me.” I said.

He didn’t hesitate. “Always.”

I closed my eyes, and instead of pushing against the system….

I reached deeper. Past Selene’s interference, past the Sentinel and straight to the guardian core itself and the ancient machine pulsed in response and for a split second… It recognized me.

Silver light erupted from the courthouse marker, shooting into the sky like a beacon. The Sentinel froze completely. With Its glowing eyes flickered.
Selene’s calm expression finally cracked. “…Impossible.”

I opened my eyes, and tge Sentinel slowly turned its head away from me, and toward Selene.

Kai blinked. “Wait…” He said.
The massive machine took one heavy step up the courthouse stairs, and Selene straightened, with her eyes narrowed. “Oh,” she said softly. “That’s new.”

The Sentinel raised its arm, but not at us. It was at her, and suddenly, the battle had changed.
