Chapter 63 Courthouse Convergence
Luna’s POV
The courtyard felt like it was closing in. Dust swirled around the ruined school, the guardian core’s rings spinning furiously behind us. Every pulse from the system carried a whisper of Selene’s interference, a distortion I could feel deep in my chest.
“Kai… we have to move,” I muttered, my voice tight, and unsteady. My hands still tingled from the backlash of energy I’d just fought against.
He nodded, eyes flicking to the red marker still hovering over the courthouse. “Yeah… and I think she’s making this trip a lot more interesting than it needed to be.”
I clenched my fists and forced the pulse inside me to focus. Selene wasn’t just a threat…she was actively warping the guardian core’s functions. Every step toward the courthouse felt like wading through a storm of silver lightning, my own power colliding with hers.
The streets were silent, too silent. Broken glass shimmered on the pavement, kicked up by winds that weren’t really there. Shadows seemed to cling to the edges of buildings, moving unnaturally.
“Kai…” I whispered. “She’s not just testing me. She’s anticipating us.”
He frowned. “Anticipating… or controlling?”
I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. The pulse in my chest screamed, pulling me toward the courthouse. Every fiber of me screamed that Selene was already there, waiting. And I knew she’d prepared something far worse than what we’d just faced.
We rounded the corner near the old market. The air shimmered, and the red marker on the holographic map pulsed violently.
“Marker’s… moving,” Kai muttered, his voice tense.
I froze. “She’s not just at the courthouse. She’s guiding the system’s defenses and redirecting the breaches.”
A gust of wind swept past, carrying a faint whisper that made my hair stand on end. I spun instinctively, my heart hammering. Shadows flickered along the rooftops, and I caught the faintest glimmer of her silver hair in the distance.
“Luna…” Kai’s voice cut through my panic. “Focus. We have to get there.”
I nodded, teeth clenched. Focus. The pull inside me had shifted from raw energy to strategy, instinctive and precise. Selene wanted control, but she had exposed herself.
The courthouse loomed ahead. Its crumbling stone walls glimmered faintly under the moonlight. Normally, it would feel safe, almost familiar. Now… it radiated danger. The red marker hovered above the roof, a silent threat.
And then we heard it—a low hum, mechanical, vibrating through the streets. The guardian core reacted instantly, its rings spinning faster, trying to isolate the intrusion.
“Here we go,” Kai muttered, glancing at me. “She’s triggered something.”
The hum intensified. Shadows in the street bent unnaturally, twisting toward the courthouse. Then shapes emerged and constructs.
Not the massive fleet Ethan had warned us about, not yet. These were smaller, agile, and eerily silent. Metallic limbs gleamed under the streetlights, silver markings like Selene’s own energy etched across their frames.
“They’re… hers,” I whispered. “She’s using the system to manifest them.”
Kai’s jaw tightened. “Figures. Nothing’s ever simple with her, is it?”
I clenched my fists, letting the pulse of my anchor power flare in response.
The constructs paused, sensing the energy, hesitating. My connection to the core gave me an edge, but it was not enough.
“Luna!” Kai shouted as one of the constructs lunged toward me.
I reacted instinctively. Energy surged outward, a wave of silver light. The construct slammed back, metal screeching, pieces sparking as they collided with invisible force. The others hesitated, circling, and waiting for my next move.
Selene’s voice echoed through the air, carried across the system itself. “Impressive… but predictable.”
My stomach dropped. She was inside the network…her voice carried through the constructs, her control amplifying them, feeding them energy directly from the core. Every pulse in my chest responded to her, not me.
“Kai… I need you to cover me!” I yelled, surging forward, energy flaring like a storm.
He did, pulling constructs off me, striking with precision and speed. The silver energy from my hands collided with Selene’s constructs again, and sparks danced across the street. But I could feel the strain, every second I resisted, she pressed harder, bending the core’s influence toward her.
The courthouse steps loomed. I could see the main doors, faintly glowing with the red light of the marker. That had to be Selene’s access point.
“We reach that door,” I gasped to Kai, “we cut her link…temporarily at least. She’s connected to the system there.”
He nodded, gritting his teeth. “Then let’s move before she figures out we’re onto her.”
We sprinted, constructing, pursuing, and the silver energy in the air crackled like lightning. I kept a tether of the core’s energy between us and the constructs, a fragile shield.
“Almost there!” I shouted. The courthouse doors were just a few steps ahead. I could feel Selene’s presence stronger than ever, tugging at the network like a predator trying to pull me in.
And then….she appeared.
The air shimmered, and she stood at the top of the courthouse steps, silver hair glowing faintly, her amber eyes fixed on me. One hand rested on the carved stone railing, the other lifted slightly, and her fingers brushed the air as if conducting the very energy around us.
“Welcome,” she said softly, almost serenely. “To your true test, Luna.”
I felt the pulse in my chest surge uncontrollably, a mixture of fear, fury, and determination. “Selene… I won’t let you control this system. Not you. Not anyone.”
Her smile widened. “We’ll see. The system recognizes power, Luna… and I intend to see who it belongs to.”
The constructs fell into formation around her. Kai and I froze for a second, taking in the sight: dozens of metallic warriors, glowing with her energy, poised to strike.
“Ready?” Kai muttered, with his hand touching mine. “Because this is about to get… messy.”
I nodded, feeling the anchor pulse in response to the constructs, to Selene, and to the entire system. The courthouse steps became the line between what we had to protect and the power she wanted to claim.
“Then let’s finish this….our way,” I whispered.
Selene tilted her head, almost amused. “Oh, Luna… this is only the beginning.”
The air shimmered, constructs moving, energy crackling, and the first wave of the fight for control of the guardian system began.
