Chapter 55 Network Surge
Luna’s POV
The ground doesn’t explode….it ascends.
Silver architecture erupts from under the courtyard in clean, geometric pillars, lifting asphalt, benches, broken glass, and everything ... .into a rising circular platform.
The construct gripping me tightens its hold. White light constricts around my ribs.
Pain spikes.
I don’t fight it emotionally.
I center.
The guardian’s pulse is racing through me now…no longer distant. No longer filtered.
Full access and full response.
The sky tear above widens another fraction.
On the other side, something shifts again. Massive, structured, and waiting for clearance.
Integration window open.
“Denied,” I whisper.
I slam both palms downward.
The silver platform beneath us locks into place mid-rise. Pillars snap together overhead, forming a lattice dome that intercepts the upward white threads.
The two constructs anchor the tear-jerker as their connections strain.
The one restraining me adjusts, trying to drag me upward instead.
I let it. Just enough.
Then I reverse the flow.
Instead of pushing outward….
I pull. Not from the tear, from beneath, and from every buried node connected to the guardian network.
A deep, rolling surge answers.
Miles away. Under the streets, under buildings, and under the rail yard.
Every station flares.
The construct holding me flickers violently.
White fractures spread across its torso where my shadows pierce through it.
It tightens again…. Desperate now.
The sky tears pulse bright, reacting to the spike.
Kai slams into the barrier again, claws glowing, but gets thrown back once more.
“Luna!” he roars.
I don’t look at him….I can’t break focus.
The other two constructs abandon stabilization and redirect full force toward me, firing converging white beams through the dome’s gaps.
I twist inside the construct’s hold and angle my body deliberately.
“Now!” I shout.
The column behind me detonates in pure silver flare. The beams strike….
And refract directly into the dome’s upper lattice.
The energy has nowhere to disperse.
It folds. Back on its feet.
The dome converts white force into silver charge and slams it downward into the construct restraining me.
The impact is violent. The white grip shatters.
I drop, twisting midair, and land hard on the rising platform.
The construct fragments into splintered light, trying to reform….
But I’m already moving.
I thrust my hand forward and drove a concentrated silver spear through its core.
This time it doesn’t split.
It collapses inward, imploding into a dense white shard that clatters onto the platform and goes still. One down.
The remaining two shift tactics instantly.
They ascend higher, and closer to the tear, abandoning ground engagement entirely.
Smart.
They’re prioritizing breach completion. The tear widens under their direct proximity.
The wind becomes a vertical vacuum.
Cars lift inches off the ground before slamming back down.
Students are long gone from the courtyard…thank God…but emergency vehicles skid uselessly at the perimeter.
Kai climbs onto the rising platform, breath ragged.
“You can’t hold both,” he says urgently. “Them and the tear.”
“I know.”
The two constructs merge midair.
Their forms stretch and fuse into a taller, denser figure of white geometry.
More stable.
More powerful. It raises both hands. The tear splits another inch.
A blinding outline becomes visible beyond it….
A colossal shape pressing against the boundary.
Not fully formed here. But I'm ready.
The merged construct speaks again, voice deeper now.
Anchor resistance is unsustainable. Transfer required. I feel the guardian network straining.
It’s not designed for external war. It’s designed for regulation.
Containment and balance.
If that thing crosses through… balance ends.
Kai steps beside me.
“Tell me what to hit,” he says.
I glance at the merged construct. Then at the tear.
Then at the silver lattice dome.
“It’s stabilizing from both ends,” I say quickly. “Break the sky-side symmetry.”
He doesn’t ask how.
He leaps.
Not at the construct…. At the dome.
He scales the silver lattice like a predator climbing bone, launching upward toward the tear itself.
The merged construct reacts instantly, firing a concentrated white beam at him.
I intercept with a shadow-formed shield midair, deflecting the blast sideways.
It scorches the football field into glass.
Kai reaches the upper lattice and slams both claws into a glowing node point.
The entire dome shudders. The tear flickers.
The massive shape behind it hesitates.
The merged construct roars….not in anger, but in system error….and dives straight at Kai.
I react without thinking.
I extend both arms and pull every active line in the courtyard into a single vector.
Silver streams converge from the column, the platform, the buried grid….
And spear upward into the merged construct mid-flight.
Impact.
The construct convulses violently, white fractures splintering across its fused body.
But it doesn’t break.
Instead….
It grabs the spear of silver energy itself.
And redirects it. Straight into the tear.
The sky splits wider in a single, violent snap.
The colossal shape beyond slams against the boundary….
And one massive white limb breaches halfway through. The air pressure drops so sharply that my ears pop.
Kai loses his grip and falls.
I dive forward and catch him mid-drop, shadows cushioning our impact against the platform.
We hit hard.
The breached limb presses farther into the sky. Reality around it distorts like heated glass.
The guardian network pulses in full alarm. Every silver line burns blindingly bright.
And for the first time….
I feel fear, but not for me, for the town and for everyone still within range of this.
Kai grips my arm tightly.
“You have to choose,” he says.
“I already did.”
“No,” he snaps, eyes blazing. “Not between them and us. Between holding the system… or becoming it.”
The white limb pushes further through. Cracks spiders across the sky around it.
The merged construct stabilizes beneath the tear, anchoring the breach fully now.
Transfer commencing.
The guardian’s pulse slams into my chest. Not as guidance.
As an ultimatum.
If I fully integrate….
If I become the central anchor….I can force a total network surge.
A hard reset.
It will seal the tear. Expel the breach. Destroy the constructs.
But…..
It will bind me permanently. Not partially and not in phases.
Completely.
No stepping away. Not normal. Ever.
The white limb flexes….
And the sky fractures another inch.
Kai’s grip tightens.
“Luna.”
The town trembles under us. Sirens wail in distant chaos.
The guardian waits for my decision.
And above us…..
The breach begins to descend.
