Chapter 38 Unseen Strings

Chapter 38 Unseen Strings
Luna’s POV

I didn’t sleep.

Not really…although my eyes closed for brief, and fitful moments, but the shadows in my room didn’t let me rest. They shifted along the walls, pulsing softly, and reacting to my heartbeat, my unease, and my fear. Even with Kai gone, even with Grandma nearby, I couldn’t shake the sense that Ethan was already here…in some way, everywhere, and pulling strings I couldn’t see.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.
Ethan:
Tick-tock, Luna. Time is short.

I threw the phone across the bed. It hit the wall and bounced to the floor. My hands shook.

He wasn’t just threatening me. He was taunting me. Playing with me. And worse… he was already controlling the chaos that would unfold tomorrow.

Prom night.

My stomach twisted. Prom. The thought should have been light. Fun. Normal. But now it was a trap. And I could feel it in my bones. Ethan had planned it. Every detail and every moment.

I tried to think about Kai. About his promise. But it felt like clutching smoke.

He’d gone. Temporarily. Or so they said. But every part of me ached, knowing that if something happened tomorrow, if Ethan succeeded… I’d be alone.

A sound made me freeze.

The window creaked. The shadows stretched. Not naturally, but as if they were searching and waiting.

I held my breath.

A whisper slithered along my ear. Low and guttural. Faint but unmistakable.
She’s awake.

I spun around. Nothing.

Nothing except the shadows curling in corners, stretching like black fingers.
I clenched my fists. “Show yourself!” I demanded.

Nothing moved. But the air felt heavier. Hot, watching and judging.
It wasn’t Tyler. Not Kai. Not human.

It was Ethan’s doing. I could feel it.

He had a way of touching the world without ever being there. A lingering shadow, a thread that always pulled toward me. And right now, it was tightening around me like a noose.

The next morning, school felt different.

Not just because the hallways still smelled faintly of blood and disinfectant, but because everyone knew something had happened…and everyone wanted to see me fail. Or worse, break.

I walked beside Grandma, my backpack a heavy weight on my shoulders.

“Stay calm,” she murmured. “Do not let him see you unsettled. Not even a flicker.”

I swallowed hard. I knew who she meant.

Kai wasn’t here. And Ethan was already watching.

The hallways were lined with whispers and glances, students pointing subtly, phones out, recording everything.

I hated it…I hated the attention and I hated that my power responded anyway, tightening like coiled steel inside me, reacting to every stare, and every hidden smirk.

“Luna,” Grandma said softly. “We’re going to the gym first. The prom setup. You’ll stay with me until Kai contacts us.”

I nodded numbly, feeling the weight of the world settle on my shoulders.
And then I saw him.

Ethan.

He was leaning casually against the wall near the gym entrance, hands in his pockets, hair perfect, and his smile perfectly practiced. Like he owned everything. And right now… he did.

Our eyes met, and my stomach sank.

“You’re early,” I whispered, more to myself than him.

“I like to arrive before the performance,” he said smoothly. “It’s always more impressive that way.”

Kai would have snarled. I knew it. My chest tightened.

“Don’t let him touch you,” Grandma hissed.

I looked at her, but Ethan’s gaze was locked on me. Mesmerizing. Dangerous.
“You’re mine too, Luna,” he said quietly, almost tenderly, and then smirked as if enjoying my reaction.

I clenched my fists. My power hummed under my skin. It was angry.

Protective and ready.
But it wasn’t enough.

Not yet.

The gym was set up perfectly. Decorations twisted in reds and golds, shimmering lights reflecting across polished floors. It looked like any other prom. But nothing felt normal.

Kai’s absence left a hollow ache that no decoration could fill.

And Ethan was already in the center, casually surveying, and waiting. Watching.

I stayed close to Grandma, but every instinct screamed at me to move, to strike, to warn everyone. To hide.

“Luna,” Grandma said softly. “Focus, observe and remember…. Do not act impulsively. He wants a reaction.”

I nodded.

He did.

And I wouldn’t give it to him.

Prom began.

Music thumped through the gym, masking everything else. Laughter.

Applause. Footsteps. But I could hear it all. The whispers of shadows. The soft slithering of something unnatural moving among the students.

I saw him move first. Tyler. Or what Tyler had become.

Ethan’s hand raised slightly, subtle, almost imperceptible. And Tyler shifted. His body contorted unnaturally, too fast, and too precise.

He didn’t approach me yet, but my skin crawled.

“You can’t let him control you,” Grandma whispered.

I swallowed hard. “I know.”

Kai’s voice was in my head, steady, and protective. Trust yourself. Trust what’s inside you.

I nodded again, even though he couldn’t hear me.

The music swelled. Students danced. Laughed. Celebrated…oblivious.
And Ethan?

He smiled.

Because the real show… hadn’t even started yet.

By the time the first slow song played, my hands were shaking.

Tyler moved again, faster this time, nudging closer to me. Each step unnatural, jerky. I could feel the shadow inside him pulsing like a heartbeat.

“Luna,” Grandma murmured. “Control the shadows. Now.”

I did.

My power surged, a low hum vibrating in my bones. The shadows around the gym bent, twined around the floor, stretching to me, and listening.

And I realized something terrifying.

Ethan had prepared for me. He knew my limits. He knew my abilities.

But I could fight. I could push back.

I just needed to survive…

I glanced at the edge of the gym.
And my heart froze.

Kai.

He wasn’t supposed to be here. He was supposed to be laying low. Safe.
But there he was. At the balcony above the gym, watching…he was silent and guarded. Eyes locked on me.

My chest tightened.

Ethan noticed him too.

A slow, and deliberate smile spread across his face.

“Perfect,” he whispered to himself.

And I knew.

The game had only just begun.
