Chapter 22 Masks and Promises
The halls in school buzzed with the usual mix of chatter, lockers slamming, and the faint scent of cafeteria pizza, but my mind wasn’t on schoolwork. It was on last night...the ripple, Ethan, and Kai...and now, something bigger looming; prom. Somehow, in the middle of supernatural chaos, prom still existed, a reminder that the world outside the forest hadn’t stopped spinning.
I adjusted my silver hair in the reflection of the window as I walked past the gym.
Posters for prom glimmered in glittering script: “A Night Under the Stars!” Something about the title made my chest tighten. Stars. Moon. Energy. It felt like it belonged more to us than to the oblivious humans planning this dance.
I was snapped out of my thoughts by a familiar voice.
“Thinking about last night again?”
I glanced up to see Kai leaning casually against the lockers. His blue eyes were sharp, but there was a warmth I hadn’t noticed before, a softness that hadn’t been there during training or the ripple chaos.
I groaned, dropping my bag. “You have no idea.”
He smirked. “I think I have an idea.” He stepped closer, close enough that I could feel the faint heat radiating from him. “You’re thinking about Ethan, and the ripple....and maybe a little about prom.”
I froze. “Maybe a little about prom?”
His smirk widened, mischievous and teasing, but the heat in his gaze didn’t lie. “You like the idea of going. You just don’t want to admit it.”
I blinked. He knew me too well. But more than that, I could feel the subtle pull of him being protective, possessive, and intense.
That ripple, the hum of power I had felt with him near, wasn’t gone. If anything, it felt stronger now.
I looked away, trying to gather my composure. “I don’t know if it’s a good idea. Last night… it was a lot.”
“It was,” he admitted, stepping closer so our shoulders touched. “But you handled it. You survived it. And you’re stronger than you think.” His voice softened, almost intimate. “Stronger than anyone, Luna. Including me.”
My heart stuttered. Including him? I wanted to look at him, but I couldn’t. His words were dangerous, they made my pulse race, and yet they felt impossible to ignore.
Before I could respond, a familiar chuckle broke through the hallway noise. Ethan.
I turned slowly. His eyes caught mine, warm and unreadable, but the faint shimmer in them, was the hint of something beyond human, which made my stomach twist. He looked… different, somehow. Controlled, but distant. Like a mask I hadn’t fully seen before.
“Luna,” he said, stepping toward me with that boyish smile that made me feel safe and unsettled at the same time. “You look… awake. Surprised?”
I hesitated. “Yeah...awake...and thinking.”
Ethan tilted his head, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. “Thinking about Kai?”
I glanced at Kai. He narrowed his eyes at Ethan, with subtle tension coiling between them, like a rope about to snap.
I blinked. “Maybe a little.”
Kai’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, I thought the air would crack. Then Ethan’s expression softened, almost apologetic, or was it… manipulative? My instincts flared. Something about him wasn’t fully what I had assumed.
Kai stepped closer, his presence sharp, and like a predator’s edge to the warmth he radiated. “Stay close,” he muttered, just for me, just loud enough for my chest to tighten.
I swallowed. I could feel it now, the magnetic pull between him and me. Every step he took, every subtle gesture, made my pulse spike. I wanted him...I wanted him dangerously, completely, and yet I knew better than to trust the moment completely.
Ethan, standing a few steps away, gave me a small, knowing smile. “You’re not going to make this easy for anyone, are you?”
I opened my mouth to respond, but Kai cut in first, his voice low and controlled, almost a growl. “Not my problem. Just make sure you don’t mess with her.”
Ethan raised his hands in mock surrender, still smiling. “Fine, fine. Don’t get your fur in a twist, Blackthorne.”
I shook my head, exhaling a nervous laugh. Of course, I thought. Even normal high school conversations with them are intense.
We didn’t get to linger, though. A bell rang, slicing through the tension, and students began streaming toward their classes. I slipped past them, with Kai walking just behind me.
“You’re going to the prom, aren’t you?” he asked quietly as we walked down the hallway.
I bit my lip, hesitant. “I think… I do. But I don’t know if it’s safe.”
Kai’s hand brushed mine, just barely, but enough to make the warmth spike through me. “Safe isn’t the point, Luna. Being with me? You’re never safe. But you’re alive. And I… I want to be with you. No matter what.”
I turned to him, my heart pounding. “Kai…”
“I mean it,” he said firmly, his blue eyes locking with my amber ones. “I’ve never wanted anyone like this before. Not like… you. You’re mine, Luna. And I don’t care who else is in the picture.”
The world seemed to tilt. My chest felt tight, and my thoughts dizzying, and yet… There it was. The undeniable pull between us. I wanted to wrap my arms around him, to feel the steadiness of him against me, but there was something else lingering, the ripple, Ethan, and the uncertainty of everything.
And there was Ethan. I could feel him watching, his presence felt like a shadow behind the warmth of the morning. Something about him made my instincts flare. He wasn’t just my friend anymore. Not fully. Something was hidden under that familiar smile, and I knew, deep down, it wasn’t over yet.
Kai leaned closer, just enough that his lips were near my ear. “Promise me something,” he murmured. “At prom, tonight… we stay close, no distractions, and no surprises. Just us.”
I nodded, swallowing hard. “I promise.”
“Good.” He straightened, with his hand brushing mine once more before he let go. “Because after last night… I don’t want to imagine losing you, even for a second.”
I felt my stomach flip. His words, his presence, and the heat radiating from him...it was impossible to ignore.
And somewhere in the back of my mind, a small, cautious thought whispered: Ethan.
I had to be careful. But I also knew something undeniable. Kai Blackthorne had fallen for me. Hard. And I could feel it, in every glance, every word, and every silent tension between us.
As the day stretched on, I found myself distracted in class, my notebook full of sketches of swirling light and shadow memories of the ripple, the surge of power, and the connection between Ethan and me. And yet, Kai was never far from my thoughts, the promise of him, the intensity of his claim.
When the final bell rang, I left the classroom with a rush of energy, heading to my locker. I found Ethan waiting, leaning casually, and that unreadable smirk on his face.
“You’re going tonight,” he said, matter-of-factly.
“I… think I am,” I admitted cautiously.
“Good,” he said, and for a moment, his eyes flickered with something darker, something unreadable. “You need to see it. To feel it. The ripple… it isn’t done. And neither is your power. Not yet.”
I froze. “Ethan… what are you...”
He gave me a small, knowing smile and stepped aside, letting me walk past him. “Just… be ready. There’s more to last night than you realized. I’ll explain… eventually.”
I walked down the hallway, with my mind spinning. The prom, Kai, Ethan, and the ripple...everything was about to collide. And somewhere deep inside, I knew the night wasn’t just about glitter, music, and dancing. It was going to test me. Test Kai, and test… Ethan.
By the time I reached home, I knew one thing, that last night had revealed part of the truth, but tonight, everything would be laid bare.
And for the first time, I didn’t just feel the pull of my power. I felt the pull of hearts, promises, and secrets...dangerous, intoxicating, and impossible to ignore.
Prom wasn’t just a dance. Not for me, not for Kai, and not for Ethan.
It was the beginning of everything.
