Chapter 177 What Remains under the Moon

Chapter 177 What Remains under the Moon
Luna’s POV

Ethan Monroe died under the Blood Moon. And the world changed with him.
The silver light consuming the school exploded outward across Crescent Valley in massive waves, shaking the town hard enough to split roads and shatter what little remained standing. Wolves screamed everywhere as the ritual spread through the hierarchy itself.

Not just through the town. But through every connected wolf.
The First Wolf roared in agony before me, with its massive body convulsing violently as silver cracks spread across its fur like breaking stone.

The seal was pulling it back and pulling everything back. But something was wrong. I could feel it instantly and the hierarchy wasn’t disappearing. It was searching. Searching for a new center and searching for me.

The First Wolf staggered backward under the Blood Moon, with its silver eyes fixed on mine with fury and desperation.
YOU CANNOT ESCAPE WHAT YOU ARE.

Its voice no longer sounded invincible. Now it sounded afraid.
The realization hit me hard and the First Wolf had never truly feared death.
It feared replacement.
That was the truth hidden underneath everything from the very beginning.
Not just power. Not revenge and not domination. It was fear. Fear of becoming obsolete.

And suddenly the entire story finally made sense to me.
From the moment I first stepped into Crescent Forest… from the strange instincts I carried as a child… from Kai finding me that night under the full moon… from Selene’s obsession… from Ethan’s corruption…
Everything had always pointed here.

To inheritance, to identity, and to choice.
I finally understood why my grandmother kept warning me that power carried responsibility.

Because power itself was never the real danger. Instinct was.
The First Wolf represented pure instinct: dominance, hunger, control, and violence.

A world where strength alone determined worth.
That was why the wolves became monsters after the hierarchy spread. They stopped choosing who they wanted to be. They surrendered to the strongest instinct inside them. And honestly…Humans weren’t that different.
The town proved that.

Fear turned people cruel. Power corrupted easily. Desperation made monsters out of ordinary souls. Even Ethan…Especially Ethan.
But Ethan also proved something else before the end, that people could still choose sacrifice over power. Love over control and humanity over instinct.

The silver light around Crescent Valley intensified violently as Ethan’s ritual continued collapsing the hierarchy structure.
Below us, wolves across town writhed painfully as the Blood Moon flickered overhead.

Some transformed back partially and some remained trapped between forms.
Others simply ran into the forest screaming and the army was breaking apart.
But the First Wolf still stood. And as long as it existed…
The hierarchy could be rebuilt, and the creature lunged toward me again desperately.

I met it head-on under the burning red moon. The impact shattered the ground below us and this time I didn’t fight only with claws.
I fought with understanding. The hierarchy answered me instinctively now, but instead of commanding domination…
I forced restraint and every wolf across Crescent Valley froze again.
Not through fear, but through balance.

The First Wolf’s silver eyes widened. Impossible.
Because it finally understood what made me different. I wasn’t stronger because I was more monstrous. I was stronger because I still had humanity.
The thing it lost centuries ago.
“You were never meant to rule forever,” I whispered.

The creature roared furiously inside my mind.
I AM THE FIRST.

“Yes.”
I stepped closer slowly. “But that doesn’t mean you have to be the last.”

Then I drove my claws directly into its chest and the world exploded silver.
Memories flooded through me instantly and the original transformation rituals. Ancient wars. The first wolves are turning against humanity. My ancestors built the seal. My mother is dying to preserve it. And below all of it was pain.

The First Wolf had once been human too. Long before instinct consumed everything else and that realization nearly broke me. Because monsters rarely began as monsters. They became them little by little.

Choice by choice and instinct by instinct.
The First Wolf screamed as silver light consumed its body from within and the Blood Moon cracked across the sky above Crescent Valley.
Actually cracked, with red fractures splitting through the moonlight like breaking glass. And suddenly…The hierarchy shattered.
I felt it happen. The connection binding every wolf together collapsed violently.
Not death, but freedom. The wolves across town stopped moving simultaneously.

The silver glow vanished from their eyes, the unnatural control ended and the First Wolf looked at me one final time as its body dissolved into silver ash below my hands. It was not hatred anymore. It was relief. Then it disappeared completely.

Silence fell across Crescent Valley and the storm stopped. The Blood Moon faded slowly back to white. And for the first time in what felt like forever…
The town breathed.
I staggered backward exhausted. My transformation receded partially, though not completely.
I knew instantly that part would never fully disappear now. This change was irreversible.
I would never be entirely human again. But maybe that wasn’t the point.
Kai reached me seconds later. He was bruised, bleeding, and alive.

His hands found my face carefully like he was afraid I might vanish too.
For a moment neither of us spoke. We just stood there below the fading moon surrounded by the ruins of everything we survived.

Then quietly, Kai whispered…
“It’s over.”

I looked around Crescent Valley slowly.
The destroyed school. The burning streets. The wounded survivors were emerging carefully from hiding. And somewhere under the collapsed gymnasium…
Ethan was gone.

Tears burned my eyes instantly. “No,” I whispered softly.

Not over, but just changed. Because survival always came with a cost.
That was another truth this story had always carried from the beginning.
Love did not erase pain. Power did not solve loneliness. And becoming stronger did not mean remaining untouched. We all lost something getting here.

Kai lost innocence. Selene lost certainty. Ethan lost himself trying to save me. And I lost the ordinary life I once wanted so badly.
But maybe growing up was understanding that transformation itself wasn’t evil.

It depended on what you became afterward.
I looked toward the edge of Crescent Forest as dawn slowly approached.
The forest still stood ancient, it was watching and alive. But different now. It was quieter. No longer ruled by fear.
And standing below the fading moonlight, I finally understood the real purpose behind everything that happened. This was never just about werewolves.
It was about identity.
About the battle between instinct and choice, about whether power controls you….or whether you decide who you become. And in the end, that choice was what saved us.
