Chapter 15 Shadows at the Door
Chapter Fifteen
The moment I opened the door, the air felt heavier.
The night pressed in like it had weight, full of expectation and danger.
Mara leaned casually against the doorframe, with her silly smirk in place as usual, but her eyes were sharp, and calculating... predatory even.
“You look… surprised,” she said softly, as if she’d expected nothing else.
I swallowed, i felt my chest tight. “I didn’t think… you’d actually show up here.”
She tilted her head, mocking innocence. “I always show up. I like to watch the chaos unfold.”
Before I could respond, Kai stepped beside me, he was close. His presence alone made Mara shift slightly, though she hid it with a flick of her smirk.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he said low and calm, but the undercurrent of warning was clear.
Mara’s laugh was quiet and chilling. “Oh, but I should. Especially now that I know you’re not alone.” Her gaze flicked between me and Kai. “I wondered when your little secret would reveal itself.”
The bond flared faintly under my skin. My hands trembled, and my chest felt like it might burst. The energy wasn’t just mine... it hummed with Kai’s presence, connecting me in ways I hadn’t fully realized yet.
“You’re not leaving,” Mara said. Her voice dropped.
“Not until I know exactly what’s going on here.”
Kai moved subtly in front of me, protective but not confrontational. His eyes locked on hers, calculating and dangerous. “Step outside,” he said evenly. “Now.”
Mara’s smile widened. “You can’t tell me what to do.”
A shiver ran down my spine.
The air seemed to vibrate with something unseen, something hungry. My hands balled into fists as a shiver of power ran through me. I didn’t even know it was coming.
“Luna,” Kai murmured softly, his voice grounding me. “Focus. Control it. Don’t let her provoke you.”
I nodded, and though my heart hammered. Mara’s gaze lingered on me, smug, knowing. And I hated that she did.
“You’ve been hiding,” she said, stepping closer. Her voice was silk over steel. “Do you think no one noticed? That your little… bond doesn’t scream for attention?”
The bond pulsed stronger under my skin. I could feel it responding to her words, and to her presence. I clenched my teeth. My stomach churned and my hands twitched. I wanted to lash out, and to prove her wrong, but I forced myself to stay calm.
Kai’s hand hovered near my shoulder, just a breath away. His proximity calmed me, even as sudden rush and fear surged through me.
“You’re going to regret this,” Mara said, but there was a flicker in her eyes, it was doubt, maybe, Or calculation. I couldn’t tell which.
Kai shifted slightly, with his jaw tightening. “Not if I can help it.”
Her smirk didn’t shake. “You think you can protect her? From me?”
The bond throbbed, it was urgent now. I could feel it pulsing in response to the tension, to Kai, and to my own fear and defiance. My chest felt tight, and my limbs were trembling. This was not just confrontation.
This was a test. And I wasn’t sure who was testing who.
Mara reached toward the doorframe, with a subtle movement, almost imperceptible. But I noticed.
The energy around her shifted, darkening, and my body reacted instinctively.
Power surged and my hands glowed faintly. The air hummed.
“Luna,” Kai warned softly, his voice low, almost a whisper only I could hear. “Not yet.”
I clenched my fists tighter, trying to ground myself. My heart thumped violently.
Mara took a step back, noticing the subtle shift, but she masked her reaction with a smug smile.
“You’re stronger than I thought,” she said slowly.
“Stronger than anyone expected.”
The bond pulsed again, tethering me to Kai, and to this moment. I felt his presence like an anchor in a storm, steadying me. My chest burned, and my pulse racing, but I didn’t stagger.
“You’re not taking me,” I said, my voice stronger than I felt. “Not tonight. Not ever.”
Mara’s eyes narrowed, but the smirk lingered. “Oh, Luna… we’ll see about that.”
Then, without warning, she lunged...not violently, not physically, but the energy around her hit me like a wave. The room darkened subtly, as shadows twisting unnaturally along the walls.
Kai reacted instantly, stepping between us. “Back.”
His hand brushed my arm, connecting me to him, he was calm, controlled and protecting.
The shadows trembled.
Mara’s smirk flickered.
“You can’t hide from what’s coming,” she hissed. “Not even with him by your side.”
I could feel the shiver under my skin. Something deep inside me, raw and untamed, pulsed with anger and fear. The forest, the pack, and the bond, all of it ... it was alive, reacting, and they were demanding action.
“I’m not afraid of you,” I whispered, almost to myself.
Kai’s eyes softened briefly. “You don’t have to be.”
Mara stepped back, slowly and deliberately. “This isn’t over,” she said. Her voice was a whisper, but it carried through the house like a knife. “Not by a long shot.”
The shadows settled. The air stilled and the bond pulsed faintly, as if warning me of what was next. My chest heaved... not just from fear, but from the thrill of the moment. From the realization that I wasn’t just being tested. I was being forged.
Kai reached out, finally letting his hand rest lightly on my shoulder. It was just there. Anchoring and steadying.
“You’re ready,” he murmured. “For what comes next.”
I swallowed hard. Ready? I didn’t feel ready. But I was tired of feeling powerless.
Tired of being watched and tired of being hunted.
“Then let it come,” I whispered.
Kai’s hand squeezed gently.
His eyes darkened, stormy and unreadable. “Together.”
I nodded.
The door creaked. The shadows outside stirred.
Mara’s presence lingered, a promise of chaos to come.
And for the first time, I wasn’t afraid.
Because for the fir
st time, I wasn’t alone.
The bond between us thrummed...slow, strong, and relentless.
And the war… had just begun.
