Chapter 134: A Dangerous Rescue

Chapter 134: A Dangerous Rescue
Behind them, sirens wailed closer — Arthur and the backup Julian had called.
The nightmare was over.
For now.
Hours later, they sat together in the penthouse living room, wrapped in blankets, untouched coffee cooling on the table beside them.
Julian hadn't let her out of his sight since the docks.
He hadn't said much.
Neither had she.
There was too much between them now. Too much that needed to be said carefully, or everything would shatter again.
Finally, Julian broke the silence.
"I know everything," he said quietly. "About the blackmail. About Crane. About the threats."
Lexi looked down at her hands. "I was stupid. I should have told you from the beginning."
"You were scared," Julian said. "And you thought you were protecting me."
A bitter laugh escaped her. "Yeah. I did a great job of that, didn't I?"
Julian reached out, cupping her face in his hands.
"You did," he said fiercely. "You kept fighting, even when you were alone. Even when you thought I'd hate you for it."
Tears welled in her eyes.
"You’re not weak, Lexi," he said. "You’re the strongest damn person I know."
"But I lied to you," she whispered. "I helped them hurt you."
"And then you risked your life to stop it," Julian said. "That’s what matters."
Lexi shook her head, tears spilling over. "You don't understand. I didn't just risk myself. I almost lost you."
"You never lost me," he said, voice rough. "Not really."
She wanted to believe him.
God, she wanted to.
But part of her still felt like she was standing at the edge of a cliff, one wrong step away from falling forever.
Julian seemed to read the doubt in her eyes.
He leaned forward, resting his forehead against hers.
"I’m not going anywhere," he whispered. "Not this time. Not ever."
Lexi closed her eyes, breathing in his scent, his warmth, the steady beat of his heart.
And for the first time in what felt like forever, she let herself believe.
Maybe they could survive this.
Maybe they could survive anything.
Together.
The next day, the newspapers exploded with headlines.
"Nicholas Crane's Empire Collapses Amid Scandal and Arrests!"
"Mystery Leaks Reveal Decades of Corruption!"
"Anonymous Whistleblower Destroys Billionaire Tycoon!"
Julian tossed the paper onto the table and turned to Lexi, who was curled up on the couch, sipping coffee.
"You did this," he said, a hint of awe in his voice.
Lexi smiled tiredly. "We did."
He crossed the room, sat beside her, and pulled her onto his lap.
"You’re incredible," he said against her hair.
Lexi flushed, burying her face in his neck.
"You're not so bad yourself," she muttered.
He chuckled, low and deep.
"Don't ever scare me like that again," he said, tightening his arms around her.
"I'll try," she teased. "No promises."
He kissed her hair.
And for once, the world outside their walls didn’t matter.
There was only them.
Only the future they would build together.
Stronger.
Unbreakable.
Forever.
The city glittered below them like a thousand tiny stars, and for once, Julian Styles wasn’t thinking about deals or enemies or power.
He was thinking about Lexi.
The way she leaned against him now, curled into his side on the penthouse balcony, her hair catching the moonlight. The way she smiled without even realizing it, like the world hadn't battered her heart to pieces and tried to leave her broken.
He tightened his arm around her, grounding himself in the reality of her warmth.
Lexi Thorn.
His.
After everything.
He had been such a fool to almost lose her.
Julian pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "You’re too quiet," he murmured. "What’s going on in that beautiful mind?"
Lexi tilted her head to look up at him, her hazel eyes deep and complicated. "I’m trying to believe this is real," she admitted softly. "That it’s not just a dream I’m going to wake up from."
Julian’s chest ached. He lifted her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze.
"It’s real," he said firmly. "I’m real. We are real."
A tear slipped down her cheek, but she smiled anyway.
"I’m scared," she whispered. "What if we can’t outrun everything that’s happened? What if the past keeps pulling us back?"
He brushed the tear away with his thumb. "Then we’ll fight it," he said. "Together. I’m not losing you again, Lexi. I don’t care who or what tries to come between us."
Lexi let out a shaky laugh. "You make it sound so easy."
"It’s not," he admitted. "But nothing worth having ever is."
He leaned down and kissed her — slow, deliberate, full of promises he intended to keep. She melted against him, letting him chase away the doubts, at least for tonight.
Tomorrow could bring whatever hell it wanted.
Tonight, she was his.
And he was hers.
—
The next morning dawned gray and heavy, the sky pregnant with the threat of rain.
Lexi stood at the penthouse windows, sipping coffee and watching the city stretch awake below. She felt different today — lighter, somehow. Like the chains that had been wrapped around her chest for months had finally loosened.
Behind her, she heard Julian moving around, getting ready for the day.
They had barely been apart for hours at a time since the docks — both of them clinging to this fragile peace, desperate not to lose it.
"Come back to bed," Julian called teasingly.
Lexi smiled over her shoulder. "Some of us have businesses to run, Mr. Styles."
He came up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder.
"You could stay," he murmured against her ear. "Let me take care of you."
Lexi leaned back into him, savoring the rare softness in his voice. "Tempting. But I need to start rebuilding my company."
His arms tightened around her. "I’m helping behind the scenes, you know. Cleaning your name. Making sure the right investors start paying attention again."
Lexi turned in his arms, surprised. "You’re doing that?"
Julian shrugged, a little sheepish. "You deserve everything you lost. And more."
Emotion clogged her throat. She kissed him, slow and lingering.
"Thank you," she whispered against his mouth.
He smiled against her lips. "Anything for you."
