Chapter 131: Her Heart In His Hands
Chapter 131: Her Heart In His Hands
The next morning, the city buzzed with rumors.
Crane’s assets were starting to freeze. Anonymous reports flooded the press. Skeletons long buried were being unearthed.
Julian stood in the center of the storm, orchestrating the attack with cold precision.
But behind the scenes, Lexi was working too.
She fed information to underground networks.
She leaked documents anonymously.
She whispered to the right ears, turned Crane’s own people against him.
She moved like a ghost — unseen, unheard, relentless.
And slowly, painfully, Crane’s empire began to crack.
He had no idea who was attacking him from the inside.
He thought it was Julian alone.
He had no idea it was the woman he thought he had broken completely.
Late one night, Julian sat in a private war room with Mark, Arthur, and a few trusted men.
Reports piled up in front of him.
Crane’s security was stretched thin.
His finances were bleeding.
His investors were abandoning him.
"At this rate," Mark said, smirking, "he'll be bankrupt within the month."
Julian barely reacted.
It wasn't enough.
Nothing would ever be enough to make up for what he'd lost.
Still, something gnawed at him.
An odd pattern in the attacks.
They were... messy. Emotional. Personal.
It didn’t feel like his style.
It didn’t feel like Mark’s, either.
Someone else was involved.
Someone unpredictable.
For the first time in days, Julian felt a flicker of suspicion.
But he shoved it down.
He didn’t have time to chase ghosts.
Not when the real enemy was still breathing.
Across the city, Lexi sat at a dingy diner, laptop open, fingers flying.
Another leak. Another blow against Crane.
She barely noticed the people coming and going around her.
Until a figure slid into the seat across from her.
She looked up, heart stuttering.
It was the unknown man — the one who had first blackmailed her into betraying Julian.
Her blood ran cold.
"You thought you could play both sides, sweetheart?" he said, smiling thinly. "You’re smarter than that."
Lexi snapped her laptop shut. "What do you want?"
The man leaned in. "I want Crane gone as much as you do. But don’t think for a second you’re off the hook. If Julian finds out you were involved from the start..." He chuckled darkly. "Well. Let's just say love makes men cruel."
Lexi clenched her fists under the table.
"I’m not afraid of you," she said.
He laughed. "You should be. You’re standing on a landmine, princess. One wrong move, and everyone you care about goes up in flames."
He slid a burner phone across the table.
"Stay ready. I may call on you again."
And then he was gone, disappearing into the night like smoke.
Lexi sat frozen, the weight of everything pressing down on her.
She had thought she was fixing things.
But she was still trapped.
Still bleeding.
Still fighting a war she wasn’t sure she could win.
Meanwhile, back at Styles Tower, Julian sat alone in his office, the city burning beneath him.
He should have felt victorious.
Instead, he felt nothing.
Nothing but an aching, hollow space where Lexi used to be.
He closed his eyes, her face flashing in his mind — laughing, crying, lying.
He clenched his fists.
No more weakness.
No more second chances.
And yet, deep down, some small, broken part of him still whispered her name.
Still begged for one more chance to hold her.
Still dreamed of a world where love hadn’t been a weapon.
But dreams were for fools.
And Julian Styles was no fool.
Not anymore.
Lexi barely slept that night.
Every creak of her apartment building made her jolt awake. Every buzz of her phone made her stomach churn. The burner phone the unknown man had given her sat on her nightstand like a ticking bomb, silent so far — but she knew it was only a matter of time before he called again.
When the screen finally lit up at three a.m., her heart seized.
She picked it up with trembling fingers.
Unknown: "Tomorrow. Noon. You will disable the security system at Styles Tower. Or your father’s death will be just the beginning."
Lexi’s throat closed.
Her father.
Even in death, they used him against her.
She squeezed her eyes shut, her chest aching.
She couldn’t do this.
She couldn’t.
If she disabled the security system, she would be handing Julian over on a silver platter. She would be exposing everyone loyal to him — Mark, Arthur, the entire inner circle.
She would be no better than Crane himself.
Her hands shook as she typed out a reply.
Lexi: "There must be another way."
The reply came instantly.
Unknown: "No. If you refuse, I will ruin you. And everyone you care about."
Lexi let the phone fall onto the bed.
Tears blurred her vision.
How had it come to this?
She had already betrayed Julian once.
She couldn’t survive doing it again.
Not even to save herself.
The next morning, Julian sat in his office, staring at a report Arthur had just placed in front of him.
"Another strike against Crane’s people," Arthur said. "But it wasn’t one of ours."
Julian’s brows furrowed. "What do you mean?"
Arthur shrugged. "We got the results. We just didn't pull the trigger."
Julian leaned back in his chair, his mind racing.
Someone else was helping.
Someone who knew exactly how to strike.
Someone who moved like a ghost.
He thought back to the patterns he had noticed — leaks that felt emotional, messy, personal.
He thought back to Lexi.
The timing.
The coincidences.
The way her eyes always seemed to carry some secret pain whenever she looked at him.
A suspicion, cold and unwelcome, slithered into his mind.
Could it be her?
Was Lexi fighting for him in secret?
Even after everything?
Julian clenched his jaw.
He needed proof.
If it was true...
God help him.
Because if it was true, he didn't know whether he would strangle her for lying to him again — or fall to his knees and beg her to never leave.
Meanwhile, Lexi walked into Styles Tower, her hands clammy, her heart hammering.
She had made a decision.
