Chapter XVIII
**A few weeks earlier**
She took a tentative step towards the ballroom, feeling as though her heart had been ripped out of her chest. As she got closer, she saw her Mom and Dad facing each other in an intense conversation. Even amid the loud chatter and clinking glasses from the guests, their words seemed to be amplified. “Honey, we didn’t want you to find out like this, but Knox is a better option for Sadie...He represents our family well and has clear career goals…You just have your head in the clouds too much and should support your sister more,” Dad said with an irritated edge to his voice. Mom ran her fingers through her hair and sighed. “We always have treated you like family,” she said in a gentle tone.
Lily's heart sank as she heard her parents' conversation. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Her family had always been close, but this revelation shattered everything she thought she knew about them. The realization that her own parents were willing to betray her for the sake of her sister's future was crushing.
She turned to Knox, her eyes filled with tears. "Is this true?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Knox took a deep breath, his expression pained. "Yes, Lily, it is," he said softly. "I'm sorry you had to find out this way."
Lily felt as if the ground beneath her feet had disappeared. She couldn't comprehend how everything could have changed so quickly. Her world had been turned upside down in a matter of moments.
Without another word, she turned and ran out of the ballroom, her heart heavy with grief and betrayal. She didn't know where she was going, but she had to get away.
She felt lost and alone, as though she had been abandoned by everyone.
Lily retreated to her dorm room, closed the door, and curled up on the floor in a fetal position. Tears streamed down her face as she tried to make sense of her emotions. She felt lost, alone, and helpless.
With the weight of her emotions bearing down on her, every tear that fell from her eyes, she could feel the weight of her emotions lifting, if only slightly.
The dorm room walls seemed to enclose around her, providing a safe haven from the chaos outside. In this moment of vulnerability, she allowed herself to be consumed by the tidal wave of feelings crashing upon her.
The room echoed with her silent cries, as if it understood the depth of her despair. Each breath she took felt like an uphill battle against the suffocating heaviness in her chest. But amidst the darkness that cloaked her mind, a flicker of determination ignited within.
She yearned for solace, for a glimmer of hope to guide her through this turbulent storm.
With shaky hands and trembling resolve, she reached out for a pen and an empty notebook lying nearby. With each stroke of ink on paper, she found herself pouring out her heart and soul onto those blank pages.
The words danced across the lines, creating a symphony of raw emotions and vivid imagery.
She wrote about love lost and dreams shattered, about fear gripping tightly onto every ounce of courage within her.
She wrote until the thoughts in her head became tangible on the page—until they were a mere thoughts as she fell into a deep slumber.
When Lily woke up, her eyes were puffy and heavy. It took a moment for her to remember where she was and what had happened. As she sat up, she felt a sense of clarity washing over her, as if the storm within her had finally subsided.
She looked down at the pages of her notebook and read through the words she had written the night prior. She could feel the weight lifting off her chest with each word she read. It was as if her emotions were finally being released from their captivity.
As she closed the notebook, she felt a sense of calm wash over her. She knew that things were far from perfect, but she also realized that she had the strength to face them. She had always been a fighter, and she was determined to rise above this betrayal and come out stronger on the other side.
With a renewed sense of purpose, Lily got up from the floor and made her way to the bathroom. She splashed cold water on her face, feeling the refreshing coolness wash over her tired eyes.
She paused for a moment, her gaze lingering on her reflection in the mirror. The woman looking back at her was worn and tired from all the hardships she had endured, yet somehow she still remained steadfast in the face of adversity. She felt a conflicting blend of sadness and strength rising within her.
Lily was startled by the sudden intrusion of Lucas into her bathroom when the door flew open. The large, intimidating man had burst in, and she nearly leaped out of her skin with fear. "Who are you?" she asked.
Lucas stood towering in front of her, his eyes intense and focused. "I'm here to protect you," he said firmly. "Alexander sent me."
Lily felt a mix of relief and confusion wash over her. "Protect me from what?" she asked.
Lucas hesitated for a moment before responding. "There are people out there who want to hurt you," he said cryptically. "It's not safe for you to be alone."
Lily felt a chill run down her spine as she thought about the dangers lurking outside. She had always felt safe within the walls of her dorm room, but now she realized that the world was a much more dangerous place than she had ever imagined.
"Okay," she said softly. "I trust you."
Lucas nodded, his expression softening slightly. "Good," he said. "We need to leave now."
Lily nodded, feeling a sense of urgency rising within her.
She grabbed her notebook and followed Lucas out of
the dorm room, her heart pounding in her chest. She didn't know what was going to happen next, but she knew that she had to be brave and face whatever challenges lay ahead.
As they walked down the hallway, Lily couldn't help but wonder what Alexander had gotten her into. What kind of danger was she in? And why did he feel the need to protect her?
But then she pushed those thoughts aside and focused on the present moment. She had always been a survivor, and she was determined to make it through this, no matter what.
As they made their way outside, Lily felt a sense of relief wash over her as the fresh air hit her face. She looked around, trying to get her bearings, but everything looked unfamiliar. They must have taken a different route than the one she usually walked to class.
"Where are we going?" she asked Lucas, her voice shaking slightly.
"We're going to a safe house," he said simply.
Lily nodded, not wanting to ask any more questions. She trusted Lucas and Alexander, but she couldn't shake the feeling that something dangerous was lurking in the shadows.
As they walked, she kept her eyes peeled, scanning the area for any signs of danger. She couldn't see anything out of the ordinary, but she knew that danger could come from anywhere.
Finally, they arrived at an unassuming isolated house. Lucas led her inside and up the stairs to a spacious bedroom with a master bathroom inside. He opened the door, and Lily stepped inside.
Overall the house was sparsely decorated with a few chairs and a table in the living room area; a kitchenette, complete with refrigerator and stove, sat tucked away in a corner; while the bedroom held a king size bed, chest dresser, and a small sitting area.
As Lily surveyed her surroundings, she realized this wasn't meant to be someone's permanent residence - it was just a temporary safe house.
"Is this going to be my home now?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
Lucas turned to her, his expression serious. "Just for a little while," he said. "Until we can make sure that you're safe."
Lily nodded, understanding. She knew that she couldn't stay in this safe house forever, but for now, it was a place for her to hide and regroup.
As the day wore on, Lily found herself growing restless. She wasn't used to being cooped up in one place for so long. She missed the freedom of being able to go wherever she wanted, whenever she wanted.
But she knew that she had to be patient. She was in a dangerous situation, and she had to wait until it was safe for her to leave.
As the night fell, Lily found herself lying on the king size bed in the bedroom, staring up at the ceiling. She couldn't sleep, her mind racing with thoughts and questions.
Suddenly, she heard an unexpected noise coming from downstairs.
Her heart raced as she recognized the sound of someone attempting to break into the safe house.
