The Night of the Fire
Cassian Kent
The package, as my assistant had told me about, on my table looked like something to be extremely careful about when I got back to the office. It had no envelope, or name, or even a return address. It was just a single piece of paper that was folded in half and waiting for me.
I picked it up, and the first few words jumped into my head, the revelation so shocking that I threw the paper back to the table as if it burned.
It only had three sentences that made my heart race, and I began looking around to see if anyone had seen my reaction, or if anyone was disappearing by the corner after dropping the letter. I even went as far as checking out the CCTV cameras to see who had entered my office, but all I saw was a drone that was flying behind my assistant. She didn't seem to be aware of it even after she opened my office doors to drop some files. The drone entered my office, but never left.
I caught sight of it resting on an armchair, and something about it struck me. The red blinking light that showed that it was recording my actions. I quickly rushed forwards it and made sure to smash and trash it, and then I went back to the letter that sat on the table.
I read it over and over again, but the words didn't change.
I know about the flash drive. I know about Harrison, and I know you went to her apartment that night. The clock is still ticking.
I sat down in my chair. The city was dark outside. The office was quiet since everyone had gone home hours ago. I was pondering about who sent this... what was their motive? What did they want from me?
It turned the paper over and saw nothing on the back of the paper, not even a return address. It was just like a piece of printer paper anyons could buy anywhere.
I thought about the fire.
Not Richard's house. Not that. I had nothing to do with that. That was someone else's work and I had taken it as a welcome distraction. A way that got Aria out of her apartment that night which gave me easy access. I was the first person the butler called about the fire, and I had also known that Harrison had given her the flash drive. I told the butler to call Aria and Rosa immediately knowing the shock of the news would make her forget about the flash drive.
Flashback.
I drove to her building at 11:47pm. My source had called an hour earlier: "Harrison gave her a flash drive. The will. The real one."
I parked in the garage and took the stairs, her floor was quiet. I had a key which I had gotten from a contact in building security who owed me. It didn't take long before I let myself in. The apartment was dark when I entered, and I was surprised she had been able to turn off the lights before running off. Still, everything was good because I wouldn't have to be the shadow that was spotted from her room's window. he
I searched her desk first. Nothing. Her laptop bag. Nothing. The drawer where she kept her important papers. Nothing. It was like flash drive wasn't there. Like she hid it.
I checked the kitchen counter, the bedroom nightstand, the bathroom cabinet. I even looked under the mattress like some kind of criminal. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.
I was frustrated, angry, scared. If she had the drive, she could destroy me. She could go to the police. She could expose everything. Yes, we'd fuck before, but I wasn't certain that all her hatred for me had dissipated.
I left in a hurry to rush to Richard's house before it would raise some suspicions. I didn't lock the door either and I knew the part of her building that had a faulty wiring.
It wasn't until I got towards the end of the stairs and safely inside my car in the garage that I saw the flicker that came from the fourth floor's window. It started with an orange light which turned red eventually, and then plumes of smoke...
I sat there with my hands on the steering wheel. I had to call someone... The police, or even the fire safety, but I couldn't pick up my phone. My twisted mind was making calculations.. that I could have Aria live with me after the apartment unit burned down. It was a sick thought, yes, but I swear that I wanted her. Every piece of her. I was willing to do anything to keep her by my side. To do things that wouldn't make her hate me, and if I did something bad, I would make sure she never found out.
I watched the flames grow for a long time, believing that I once I was certain that almost everything burned, I would call the police. If the drive burned, no one would ever find out. Aria wouldn't hate me anymore. She wouldn't know that I did something to the will. And I also had to do something about Harrison. I had to speak to him about having conversations of discrepancies in the will with Aria. If he had any problem with it, he should let me know about it, and I would handle it myself. told.
When a woman on the third floor started screaming, I called 911 immediately.
"I need to report a fire," I said. My voice was deadly as I gave the address. "Fourth floor. Multiple residents. Please hurry."
I gave the address and hung up, making sure I wasn't using a traceable phone to call them, and then I drove away towards Richard's house that had met the same fate. And that fire wasn't caused by me.
I folded the letter and put it in my pocket. Someone knew. Someone was watching.
But that someone was also talking about Harrison... Did they think I had something to do with the death of the lawyer?
My phone buzzed on the desk, and it was a message from an unknown number.
Unknown: Did you like the letter? I have more where that came from.
I typed back: What do you want?
Unknown: For now? Just to watch you squirm. But soon. Very soon.
Me: Who is this?
Unknown: Someone who's been watching for a very long time.
I tried to call the number but no answer came. I tried to trace it but it was blocked and encrypted.
