Paris And Jealousy

Laila Rhysander

I sat on the hotel room, watching the Eiffel tower that sparkled again... alone in my bedroom as a married woman.

My phone rang on the table, and I picked it without looking at the caller ID, thinking that it was Cassian calling.

"Hello... Cassian.. did you?"

"Cassian? Sis, it's me." My sister, Barbara, said into the phone. "I thought you were back in New York because I saw your husband back in the country. He came to the company just in time to save his step niece from being swallowed by the wolves."

At least that's what she thought. It was much better than the truth being that Cassian left me, barely completing our honeymoon, just because he got a picture of Aria and a random man kissing.

"You know how the board members are..." I shrugged, trying to find the perfect excuse that would smoothen all these out. "It wasn't just for her but a long-standing lawyer of his company was involved in a fire outbreak, which he didn't survive. Cassian is back to reassure the family for their loss, you know..."

"Awwwwn..." Barbara cooed on the other end of the line. "I'm sorry to hear that, but Laila? You seem to have struck a goldmine. Keep it tight, and take good care of him. The more you talk about him, the more it makes me wish that I found him first."

I felt my blood run cold at my sister's declaration. I knew she wasn't lying about trying to snatch Cassian from me. I saw her always trying to rub her body all over him anytime he came over for a family meeting. Now, not only was Aria Hartwell threatening my marriage with him, but I was also contending with my sister.

I could handle my sister for now, but Aria? Aria was going to be a huge problem. I knew my agreement with Cassian on this marriage, but I lied to myself and to him. I loved him. I had feelings for him. And I was extremely jealous.

"Oh really?" My voice became completely sweet and smooth. "Too bad I was the first person to meet him. But I really do hope you find someone like Cassian, you know. He's sweet, loveable, and really takes food care of people he considers his family." I paused and stood up from the bed. "You know... It would be much better than living the lonely life you're currently living in right now."

I bit my inner cheeks at the irony of it all. I was the married one, but I was still very lonely.

"Now that's just being rude." Barbara cut in immediately, and I could hear the anger in her voice. "I am not lonely, and I hope you have a really happy marriage because I'll pick out every crazy story from your marriage and feed it to our group of friends, and you know how they are." She clicked her tongue. "And better be good, or else mum would be so disappointed that you can't get things right."

She hung up without giving me time to talk back at her. It wasn't even up to a minute later that my phone buzzed with a text from Cassian. I could feel my heart racing that he had remembered to text me after he had disappeared last night without even speaking to me.

I got back safely. You could extend your stay if you want, I'll send more money if you'd like.

He didn't ask to see how I was doing. He didn't even say he missed me, which was really corny of my to think about such in the first place, but still... He just didn't care. And from what Barbara said, he had arrived more than twelve hours ago and was just remembering that he was married to drop a text for me.

I felt the knife lodge deep into my heart the more I thought about it. Aria must be lucky to always have him text her first, think about her all the time, and just... I bit my lower lips to stop myself from crying. This wasn't the kind of woman I was supposed to be. I acted like everything was normal and I was all composed, but I was just an emotional wreck from the beginning of time. I was sure that Aria got the better end of Cassian's attention and love while me? If I continued with this marriage, I was always going to be on the recieving end of the crumbs.

I typed back: You're not even going to ask how I'm doing?

Three dots appeared on the screen before they disappeared and no message was sent.

I threw the phone across the room in frustration and it hit the wall and bounced. The screen cracked, but I didn't care. I was just so stupid. So sick and stupid about everything.
Somewhere in this city, couples were holding hands... Somewhere in this city, people were in love. While I, a newlywed, was in a hotel room with a cracked phone and a husband who'd rather be in New York with his dead brother's daughter.

"His niece," I said to the ceiling. "He's in love with his niece."

I laughed despite myself and picked up my phone. If I was going to save my new marriage, because I wasn't going to let my sister get the best of me, I was going to understand what was really happening to be able to get rid of her once and for all. Even if it meant having to comfort Cassian when she disappeared forever, but I was going to do it.

I didn't know where the thought came from, but I wasn't going to sit back and watch a mere looking woman, whose looks didn't even stand a chance against me, taking the attention of my husband.

"Hello? Philip?" I called my private investigator from my second phone. "I'd like you to get me all the information you know about Aria Hartwell before the day is over. Oh, and I don't just mean surface information that everyone on the internet knows."
