Chapter 92 Failed confrontation

Chapter 92 Failed confrontation
Lucas paused, his fists clenched and eyes glaring at Alex. “It's over! I want my peace of mind.”
As he spoke, Alex was shaking his head in rejection of his words. “Please, I didn’t mean to do…”
“But you gaddamn did it!” Lucas roared. “You accused me like we’re nothing! You didn’t fight to keep me, you fought against me!”
Tears rolled down Lucas’s cheek. He wiped it quickly. “Just get the heck out, I'm tired already.”
Tears burned in Alex’s eyes. “I’m fighting now. Please, don't do this.”
   “Too late, we're done already.”
He turned away, shoulders trembling despite his effort to stay composed.
Alex moved toward him again, refusing to give up.
With Lucas’s back turned to him, he snapped, “Enough!”
That was when Jason and Nathan rushed in.
“He said enough!” Nathan snapped as well, grabbing Alex’s arm.
“Big bro, stop,” Jason urged, holding his other shoulder firmly.
“Let me go!” Alex struggled. “I need to talk to him, I'm not done!”
Nathan stepped between them protectively. “Oh yes, you're done. You've done enough tonight.”
“You’re not helping!” Jason said sharply. “Come on bro, he is hurting. Give him some time.”
“Jason, I'm hurting too. Lucas, please, just one more chance.”
Lucas stood with his back to them, breathing unevenly, refusing to look at Alex.
Alex’s resistance weakened as they tried to drag him out. “Please let me go, “I love him,” he whispered helplessly.
Nathan’s expression didn’t soften. “Then give him space. Let him breathe for now.”
Jason gently but firmly steered  Alex toward the door. “You need to be calm. We’ll fix this. But not like this. Give him space to calm down.”
Alex kept looking back at Lucas as they led him out of the bedroom, down the hallway, and to the front door.
“Lucas!” he called one last time.
Lucas didn’t turn as the bedroom door shut by itself.
   Silence swallowed the apartment.
Inside the bedroom, Lucas finally let the tears fall.
Outside, in the corridor, Alex stood there staring at the closed door, feeling like it had slammed on his heart instead. He let out a weak breath and followed Jason's lead out to the car.
On getting home, he tried to drink more whiskey. Jason tried to talk him out of it but it wasn't working out.
He suddenly shot to his feet. “I need to go back. Nathan will take him away from me. I can't lose him. I can't lose my Lucas.”
“Come on, big bro, are you drunk already? What nonsense are you talking about? Stop assuming things.”
“No Jason, it's not an assumption. He will do it if Lucas lets him.” He insisted as he recalled how Nathan had kissed him.
“Listen to yourself, bro. You just said if Lucas lets him. Don't worry about it. I think Lucas loves you. So you need to be patient until he is ready.”
He ran a hand through his hair. “I'm scared, do you think he will listen to me tomorrow?”
“No, he won't, maybe in a few weeks or months.”
   “What?”
“What do you expect? You can't expect him to hug you tomorrow. He is very mad at you. Why didn't you give him a chance to explain? You should have given him the benefit of the doubt. You need to give him time and gradually make up for what you've done. It can only work when he believes that you trust him. So you need a whole lot of patience.”
“How do I survive? I love him, you know.” He kept confessing his love.
Jason decided to let him drink to an extent since it's what would make him sleep. So he drank more alcohol and kept blabbing about how sweet Lucas was until he became drunk. Then eventually fell asleep on the couch.
On the sitting room table, his phone lay on the nightstand.
He hadn’t checked his work emails as he used to every night. So he hadn’t seen the HR notification concerning Lucas’s resignation letter. And the HR needed a reply from Alex before he could process it based on the active contract Lucas signed.
By the next morning, “Alex woke up with a headache. Jason had made hangover soup and breakfast for himself, which he took gratefully. Then Jason left before him after encouraging him to be patient with Lucas.
On arriving at work, the first thing Alex did was walk into the kitchen just to at least see him. But Lucas wasn't there. Alex dialed his number, but it said not reachable. He asked if anyone had seen him but the reply was negative. He went back to his office to check Nathan’s place.
That instant, a call came in from his secretary Margaret.
   “Yes, Margaret.”
“Sir, the HR was asking for your decision on the email concerning Mr. Westman's resignation.”
“What?” Alex's heart skipped, then started thudding violently as he pulled down his email instantly. Then scrolled and saw it.
Lucas had applied that he won't be coming to work from that day. Alex snapped, “No, he can't resign. He signed an agreement  and besides he needs to give at least two weeks' notice. So tell HR not to process the resignation papers because he is on a three-year contract with the company.”
Having said that, he navigated to Nathan’s house security footage.
Then he saw Lucas, but Nathan wasn’t seen anywhere. He watched as he lay on the bed still sleeping.
Alex wondered, is he feeling alright? Then he stirred and woke up. He seemed tired. He raised a hand to his forehead. Then he dropped from the bed, picked up a towel, and then his phone buzzed.
He picked up and then frowned. He spoke into the phone angrily. As the call ended he groaned with his fingers clenched. Angrily he threw the towel away and screamed, “What are all these?”
“Oh damn, baby calm down. Alex whispered in his office.
That instant, he started dialing a number. To Alex’s surprise, his phone screen glowed and it was Lucas. His heart skipped again as he tried to brace himself.
“Alex, be strong. Don’t let him go,” he muttered under his breath, gripping the phone so tightly his knuckles turned white. Then he swiped to answer.
   “Good morning, ba…”
“And what exactly is good about this morning, huh?” Lucas snapped, his voice sharp and trembling with anger. “I don’t want to work with you anymore. I’m done. I was desperate when I signed that contract. I wasn’t thinking straight. Let me go. Just cancel that damn thing.”
Alex shut his eyes briefly, inhaling. He could hear the hurt beneath the fury. “Sweetheart, please, let’s talk. I know I messed up yesterday. I’m sorry. I love you. I can’t just let you walk away like this. Please…”
“I said we’re done!” Lucas cut in again, louder this time. “Tell your legal team to process my resignation. I want out of your company and your life.”
Alex’s jaw tightened. The desperation in his chest hardened into resolve. “No, baby. It’s not over. You can’t just storm off my life like this. Get dressed and come to work. Right now.”
