Chapter 117 Blood in the Stands
Chapter 117 Blood in the Stands
The next hour was a nightmare of controlled chaos.
In the arena, students moved in careful patterns, giving the appearance of combat while actually positioning themselves for escape. Kaela used hand signals they'd practised during training, passing commands from group to group: stay alive, stay together, wait for the signal.
Brin's telepathy threaded between the core group, silent and undetectable.
The Emperor's mind is wrong, he reported. His thoughts are fragmented. Chaotic. There are moments where he seems to forget where he is, then he snaps back with terrifying clarity.
Wrong how? Kaela responded mentally.
Like, his brain is failing. Dying. Brin's mental voice carried confusion and horror. I'm catching images. Medical examinations. Healers shaking their heads. A diagnosis he's kept hidden from everyone.
Is he sick?
More than sick. He's terminal. Three to six months, maybe less. His mind is deteriorating faster than his body.
The revelation changed everything.
The Emperor wasn't acting out of strategic cruelty. He was acting out of desperation. A dying man determined to burn the world before he left it.
Kaela pulled Dagon and Louise close, speaking in urgent whispers beneath the sounds of distant combat.
"Brin says the Emperor is dying. Some kind of brain illness. He has months to live at most."
Dagon's face went pale. "That's why he escalated. Why did he abandon all pretence of fair trials? He doesn't care about the future because he won't be here for it."
"He wants one last spectacle," Louise said grimly. "One last Reckoning to cement his legacy."
"Then we deny him that." Kaela's jaw set. "We must protect our families from this madman. And we watch him die knowing his legacy is nothing but ashes."
A scream from the stands drew their attention.
Vanya's parents.
Lord and Lady Aeris had been seated near the front, close to where Aria had fallen. Now soldiers surrounded them, blades drawn.
"The Aeris family conspired against the crown!" The Emperor's amplified voice rang out. "Let this be a lesson in the price of treason!"
"No!" Vanya's cry was raw with terror. "Mother! Father!"
The soldiers moved.
Kaela couldn't look away. Couldn't do anything except watch as Vanya's parents fell, their blood staining the wooden seats of the viewing platform.
Vanya collapsed to her knees, a sound escaping her that wasn't quite human. Selene caught her before she hit the ground and held her while she screamed.
"Monster," Dagon breathed. "He's a monster."
He's worse than that, Brin's mental voice was shaking. He's a monster with nothing left to lose.
The Emperor surveyed the horror he'd created with something like satisfaction. "Anyone else wish to test my patience? Anyone else hiding treasonous thoughts?"
Silence. Terrible, complicit silence.
"Good. Then the trial continues. Fight, competitors. Die for my entertainment. Or don't, and watch everyone else die instead."
He released more creatures into the arena. Not the manageable beasts from earlier. These were worse. Larger. Hungrier. Abominations that shouldn't exist outside of nightmares.
"Scatter!" Kaela shouted. "Defensive formations! Protect each other!"
The students who'd allied with them moved in coordinated groups, drawing the creatures away from vulnerable positions. Those who'd maintained neutrality hesitated, then joined the coordinated defence. Even former enemies worked together against the nightmare beasts.
Unity in the face of extinction. Exactly what the Emperor hadn't wanted.
He's going to do something, Brin warned through their mental link. I can feel his rage building. He expected us to turn on each other.
Let him rage. We hold together.
The battle consumed the next several hours. Creatures fell. Students fell. In the stands, more skirmishes erupted as the Emperor ordered random executions to maintain terror.
But the resistance held.
By late afternoon, the arena floor was littered with monster corpses, and the exhausted survivors had retreated to defensive positions. Twenty-three students remained. Eight dead in the creature assault.
"He can't maintain this forever," Louise said, her protection magic flickering from overuse. "The soldiers are tired. The creatures are depleted. His control is slipping."
"But the failsafe remains." Dagon stared at the Emperor's platform. "As long as he can kill everyone with a single command, we can't move against him directly."
"Then we need to find the failsafe."
"It'll be close to him. Maybe in the medallion he touched." Kaela thought furiously. "If we could get someone up there..."
"The walls are fifty feet high and guarded."
The tunnels. Brin's mental voice cut through. The creature release points connect to a network beneath the arena. Some of those tunnels run beneath the viewing platform.
"You want to come up through the floor?" Dagon asked aloud, keeping his voice low.
I want to get close enough to the failsafe to understand how it works. If I can touch it, read the magical signature, maybe I can find a way to disable it.
"That's suicide," Selene said flatly. She still held Vanya, who had gone silent and still, her eyes empty with shock. "You'd be directly beneath the Emperor's throne."
I'd be beneath everyone's feet, unnoticed, while you create a distraction above. Brin's mental smile was thin but determined. I'm not a fighter. This is how I can help.
"I'll go with him." Taren stepped forward. "If something goes wrong, he'll need a healer."
"No." Louise's voice cracked. "Taren, you can't."
"I have to." He took her hands, pressed them to his chest. "Your shield magic is needed up here. Mine isn't. Let me do this."
Louise looked at him for a long moment. Then she kissed him, fierce and desperate, not caring who saw.
"Come back to me," she whispered against his lips.
"Always."
Kaela touched her stone bracelet, the one Elena had given them. She pressed it gently, feeling the warmth of the communication magic.
"Elena," she murmured. "Brin and Taren are going through the tunnels beneath the arena. They're going to try to reach the failsafe device."
A moment passed. Then Elena's voice, strained but steady: Understood. Anton is... Anton is fighting Magnus near the eastern stands. I've lost sight of him. But I'll have our people ready to move when the failsafe falls.
"Be careful."
You too. All of you.
The connection faded.
Brin and Taren slipped away toward the nearest creature release point while the others watched with held breath. The tunnel entrance was narrow, dark, and reeked of monster blood.
"Be careful," Kaela called after them softly.
"Careful died hours ago," Brin replied aloud. "Now we're working on desperate."
They disappeared into the darkness.
In the stands, Elena Vale had noticed their movement. She caught Kaela's eye across the distance and gave a slight nod.
The resistance would be ready when the moment came.
The Emperor sat on his throne, watching his trial with fading interest. His hand rested on the medallion. His eyes had that unfocused quality Brin had described. Moments of clarity, swimming in a sea of deterioration.
A dying man dreaming of death for everyone.
Kaela looked at her friends. At Dagon, whose father was somewhere in the chaos above, fighting for their survival. Louise was watching the tunnel entrance with desperate hope. At Selene, holding Vanya's broken form, both of them were orphaned in the span of hours.
They'd lost so much already. Would lose more before this ended.
But they weren't done yet.
The Emperor thought he'd designed the perfect trap. Thought his failsafe made him invincible. Thought his dying brain could still command an empire.
He was about to learn that desperation cut both ways.
And that the children he'd tried to sacrifice had teeth of their own.
