Chapter 24
I had wanted to find out what happened between McLain and Larissa, she seemed to be very pained about whatever happened between them. I was not able to enjoy the party anymore because all my attention was tied to what Larissa had said.
McLain tried to cheer me up, I am sure he suspected my mood and tried to cheer me up. I did not get any better than the thoughts of Larissa and whatever she went through at the hands of McLain. I sat there and looked at McLain, the people who came for the event seemed to have a soft spot for him as they took turns to come say hello to him. He would smile at them as he opened his arms to them.
I was on the bed and I could not wrap my head around the fact that McLain could be whoever he was in the secret. I thought about Larissa and how she must have felt in all of these. But I wondered why she was still around him like it did not hurt her. Why can she not take or pick up her pieces and leave? Why is she still here?
I looked at McLain in bed beside me. He looked calm as he slept, looking peaceful. He was so tired that he could not let us talk before he retired to bed.
I lay on the bed. As I closed my eyes to sleep I could not just take my mind off Larissa and her words. I know that I have not been pregnant before. I do not know the pains of Losing a child. I opened my eyes and looked at McLain and I can not imagine that he would hurt someone let alone kill his child. Lying beside him made me scared of his presence. I know he is a tough man and can be hard when he wants to.
The next morning, McLain looked energized and I was glad that we could finally talk.
"You were not looking at yourself at the event yesterday, is anything wrong baby?"McLain asked me, pulling me close to me as he wrapped his hands around my waist, his eyes piercing through mine, I felt a rush of excitement run through my body. I had wanted to respond to his touches but I had to discuss something with him.
"I want to know what happened between you and Larissa and why you had to do what you did to her despite knowing that it was your child too, "I asked him, pulling myself away from his body. I walked to the couch that was opposite him and sat down.
"I do not want to talk about it, Emily I was at the pick of my career and you know how my mother can be, "He said
That was some nonsense excuse, he had the money to raise a child and Larissa was ready to have a child with the city's sweetheart, it was every girl's wish, like who would not like to have a baby for McLain?
"I do not agree with you on that, "I said to him, expressing my displeasure and my unwillingness to accept his reasons.
"I have a reputation to protect and having something to do with some call girl I met at a club, do you expect me to stoop that low? I would not, Emily, my mom brought you here and I do trust her because she would not bring me someone from a low background, maybe you do not have an idea who your father was " he explained. I stayed quiet for a while. I could not say anything as I let what he had just said to me digest. I was still not satisfied, I had wanted to ask him another question but his face looked like he was pleading with me to stop with the questions already. I had to stop even though I was not too convinced about his reply. I believe he should have done things better than he had done. The pain is still left there, fresh in Larissa's memory, and then her words about me not going through the same thing scare me so much.
I went to the room. I could not be still. I had this discomfort.
I went back downstairs.
" McLain, I do not know why I am having this discomfort like I get scared, but I can not point out what was making me scared" I explained to him, I told him how I was feeling.
"Emily, you are just overthinking things, you should probably take a break or something, how about the pool" he said to me
" It is not working, I had gone to bed already and I did not want to sleep," I told him
" Okay then, you should go see a friend, go for a walk, how about you call your friend and you two head out" he said to me
" What friend?" I asked him pretending I did not know who he was talking about.
" I mean your friend, June, June, that is her name, hang out with her," he said to me. I had no other choice than to pick his advice. He was very good at manipulating my mind.
I picked up my phone and called June. I asked her if she was busy, and she said she was not. I then told her that I wanted us to hand it out. She agreed, and I was excited to hang out with her.
I went to the room, went to take my bath, came out of the bathroom, and dressed up in a simple outfit yet it was wealthy and expensive. I wore it, it was a gown. One of the gowns that McLain had gotten for me.
I went out to meet with June. McLain had asked his driver to follow us. If anything happens, he should call him. He was so concerned about my safety that he gave instructions to the driver. He was acting like I was his child.
We drove out of the house to meet with June. I saw June from afar and decided to get out of the car, I told the driver to park because I had seen who I was looking for.
I went to her and hugged her. She was not looking at herself, it was not her usual playing type. She looked calm and looked bothered as well. I just knew she was not okay, but she was trying to hide it but I could see that she was not okay.
We began to talk, I noticed her voice was also low.
" Is anything the matter with you?" I asked her if anything was wrong, and of course, something was wrong with her.
" I am fine" she answered me, but I knew that it was a lie she just told me.
" No, do not lie to me, what is eating you up?" I asked her. She did not want to tell me what it was but I did a good job because she had no other voice than to let me on it.
I was surprised to hear what she had to say. I was here and something like that was eating her? I wondered if I was a good friend at all. How come she did not want to rely on me for this? Why did she keep quiet about it? I felt sad for her and angry at the same thing for not telling me about such.
