Chapter 60

Chapter 60
Gracie

David was there. He wasn't passed out anymore. He was sitting up, hunched forward, staring at the big map on the wall. His head was bowed, and he was muttering, a low, constant rumble of words I couldn't quite make out. His hair was even messier, sticking up everywhere, and he hadn't shaved, so his face was covered in dark stubble. He looked… feral. Like a wild animal trapped in a corner.

He didn't seem to notice us at first. Just kept muttering, drawing on the map. He was talking about "them," about "the system," about "the walls closing in." His voice was hoarse, raspy, like he'd been screaming for hours.

"David?" I whispered, my voice shaky. My heart was pounding, a hard drum against my ribs. Ben put a hand on my back, a solid, reassuring weight.

He snapped his head up so fast it made me jump. His eyes. They were wide, bloodshot, completely out of focus. They darted around the room, not seeing me, not seeing Ben, but seeing something else. Something terrifying.

"They're here," he hissed, his voice like sandpaper. He pointed a shaking finger at the windows, then at the corners of the room. "They're listening! Always listening! Trying to stop me! Trying to shut me up!"

He started to get up slowly at first, then pushing himself to his feet. He swayed a little, but his eyes were locked on something invisible. "You don't understand! None of you do! They're everywhere! And you're helping them! You're letting them win!"

He took a step towards me, then another. His movements were jerky, unnatural. His hands were clenched into fists at his sides. He looked like he was ready to explode.

"David, stop," Ben said, his voice calm, but firm. He stepped slightly in front of me, putting his body between me and David. "It's just me and Gracie. No one else is here. You need to calm down."

David didn't even seem to hear him. His eyes were still fixed on me, but they weren't seeing me. They were seeing an enemy. An obstacle. His face twisted into a snarl, ugly and full of hatred. The man I loved was gone, replaced by this raging, dark stranger.

"You!" he suddenly roared, his voice cracking, shaking the very air in the room. He pointed a finger, not at the shadows, but right at my face. "You're trying to hide it! You're trying to keep me from the truth! You want them to win!"

He lunged. It was so fast. A blur of movement, pure, animalistic rage. His arm shot out, his hand open, aiming for my face. I saw it coming, a horrifying slow-motion nightmare. My breath caught in my throat. I couldn’t move. My feet felt glued to the floor.

But Ben was faster. He threw himself forward, stepping right in front of me, his body acting as a shield. David’s hand slammed into Ben’s chest with a sickening thud. The force of it made Ben grunt, stumbling back a step.

"Dave! Stop!" Ben yelled, pushing David away, hard. David reeled back, stumbling against a stack of papers, almost falling. His eyes were still wild, still burning with that insane fury. He was breathing heavily, his chest heaving.

"Get out!" David screamed, his voice raw. "Get out of my house! Both of you! You're against me! You're all against me!" He started pulling at his hair, his movements jerky, agitated.

"Gracie, now!" Ben grabbed my arm, his grip firm. He didn't even wait for me to react. He pulled me towards the hallway, towards my bedroom. "Grab what you need. Fast."

My legs felt like jelly, but I moved. The terror was a cold, hard knot in my stomach. Hearing him scream, seeing that look in his eyes, feeling his rage aimed right at me... it was worse than anything. I know had a full grasp of what the women from the shelter meant when they said they were scared, terrified.

I flew into the bedroom, grabbing a duffel bag. Ben was right behind me, shoving a few things from the closet into it, clothes, a coat. My eyes darted around. My passport, my wallet, and my old photo album. I shoved them in too, my hands shaking so badly I could barely hold anything. We couldn't stay. Not one more second.

When we walked back through the living room, David was still standing there, swaying slightly, muttering to himself, his back to us. He seemed to have forgotten we were even there. Lost in his own dark world.

Ben didn't hesitate. He pulled me out of the apartment, slamming the door shut behind us. The sound echoed in the silent hallway. We walked quickly, almost ran, down the stairs and out into the night. The cold air on my face was a shock. I was shaking, head to toe.

"Are you okay?" Ben asked, his voice low, as we got to his car. He put an arm around me, holding me steady.

I just nodded, unable to speak. The image of David’s face, so full of hatred, was burned into my mind. The man I loved. He had tried to hurt me. He was completely gone. And Ben… Ben had saved me. He saw it all. He knew now. The terrible secret of what David had become was out, shared with the one person who would have to pick up the pieces.

A hotel. A safe place. Anywhere but there. Anywhere away from the monster David had turned into. And as I collapsed into Ben's car, I knew, with a chilling certainty, that the plan whatever this killers final plan was had change. David couldn't just expose the foundation of corruption anymore. He was becoming the final, tragic piece in his own unraveling.
