Chapter 58
Chapter 58
Ben
He wasn't just obsessed anymore. He was paranoid. He wasn't connecting dots; he was seeing things that weren't there, making links that felt unhinged. He mumbled to himself constantly, about "them," about "the watchers." It was terrifying to see. This wasn't the brilliant, clear-headed Dave I knew. This was someone else entirely.
I looked at Gracie again. She was standing by the doorway, her arms wrapped around herself, watching him. Her eyes met mine, and there was a silent plea in them. A deep, hurting kind of sadness.
"Can I talk to you for a second, Gracie?" I asked, trying to keep my voice even.
She nodded quickly, not even glancing at Dave. She just quietly walked into the kitchen, which was the only clean place. I followed her, and she pulled the door almost shut behind us.
"Ben, I don't know what to do," she whispered, her voice breaking. Tears welled up in her eyes, big and shiny, but she didn't let them fall. She just blinked hard. "He's not… he's not himself."
"I see that," I said, my heart sinking even further. "What's going on, Gracie? Is it just the case? The pressure?"
She looked down at her hands, twisting her fingers. Her shoulders shook a little. "It's more than that. He's… he's just so angry. All the time. At everything. At me." She paused, took a shaky breath. "He pushes me away. He yells. And then… he just gets so mad."
Her voice was barely audible now, like she was afraid someone would hear her. "He thinks I'm trying to stop him. He thinks I'm against him. He'll get so worked up, his eyes... they just change. And he'll grab me, but to make a point. To make me listen. To make me stop talking he won’t let me out, I can’t go to work Ben. I don’t want to leave him like this"
She pulled at the sleeve of her long-sleeved shirt, fiddling with the fabric. My eyes flickered to her arm. I didn't see anything, but the way she moved, the way she was hiding…
"He threw something once," she whispered, her voice flat, emotionless, like she was telling a story about someone else. “The heavy table statue . It just missed my head. He didn't even seem to notice. He just went back to his papers, like nothing happened. Like I wasn't even there."
Her eyes finally met mine, and the tears started to fall, silence tracks down her pale cheeks. "He calls me names, Ben. He says I'm naive. Stupid. That I don't understand how dangerous this all is. That I'm trying to sabotage him." Her voice was a broken whisper. "He's hurting me, Ben. Not just with words. He's not the David I know anymore. He's… he's lost."
My blood ran cold. My best friend. The guy I looked up to. Doing this to Gracie. It was a punch to the gut, making me feel sick. I could see the fear in her eyes, the exhaustion, the pain she was holding back. It wasn't just emotional. It sounded like it was getting physical, even if she wasn't spelling it out. The way she pulled her sleeve, the way her shoulders hunched. My mind raced, trying to process it.
"Gracie," I said, reaching out to put a hand on her shoulder, gently this time. "We need to get you out of here. We need to get him help. This isn't him. Something's really wrong."
She just shook her head, tears streaming freely now. "He..... He won't let me go. He just says I'm abandoning him, that I'm part of the problem. He needs me, Ben. He says I'm the only one left who he can trust." Her words were choked with sobs now. "But he scares me. So much."
I looked out into the living room, where Dave was still hunched over his maps, muttering to himself, lost in his own dark world. My heart ached for Gracie, and a cold dread settled over me. This wasn't just a tough case anymore. This was a nightmare. And my best friend, the man I would have sworn was the most decent person I knew, was becoming the monster.
The image of Gracie's pale face, her whispered words about Dave hurting her, had been stuck in my head for the past four days. It was like a nasty splinter I couldn't dig out. I’d tried calling Dave, just a casual check-in. He’d barely grunt a response, too lost in his files, sounding more strung out than ever. Calling him felt like talking to a ghost that lived inside my best friend's body.
I’d called Gracie too, a few times, just to check on her. She’d always sound shaky, saying she was fine, just tired. But I could hear the fear in her voice, a thin, stretched-out sound that made my stomach churn. I wanted to go back, wanted to drag her out of there, but what could I do? Dave hadn't done anything to get arrested, not technically. And if I just showed up, he'd probably go ballistic. He already thought I was against him.
Sleep wasn't coming easy. Every shadow in my apartment seemed to twist into Dave’s wild eyes, or Gracie’s haunted look. I kept thinking about what she’d said: "He's hurting me." The heavy statue missing her head. The way she pulled her sleeve down. It was worse than I thought, way worse. I knew it in my gut. He was spiraling down fast, and he was taking Gracie with him.
The phone rang, cutting through the dead quiet of my apartment. It was 2:17 AM. My heart hammered against my ribs even before I saw the caller ID. It was Gracie. My hand actually shook as I grabbed the phone.
"Gracie? What is it?" I said, trying to keep my voice steady, but it came out rough.
Her voice on the other end was a ragged whisper, thin and broken, like she was barely holding herself together. "Ben… you have to come. Please. He… he really hurt me this time. I'm… I'm bleeding."
My blood ran cold. Bleeding. It actually happened. "Gracie! Where are you? Are you okay? Is he there?" I was already scrambling out of bed, grabbing my keys, my wallet, pulling on whatever clothes I could find in the dark.
"He's… he's passed out," she choked out, a ragged gasp following her words. "He just… snapped. I don't know what happened. I just… I need help, Ben. Please. I'm scared."
"I'm on my way," I said, my voice tight, trying to reassure her, even though my own hands were shaking so bad I almost dropped the phone. "Stay on the line. Just tell me what to do. Lock the door if you can. Get away from him."
"I'm in the bathroom," she whispered, her voice sounding weak. "He's in the living room. I just… I can't…"
I heard a soft sob, then a sharp, gasping breath. My mind raced. "Gracie, okay. Don't hang up. I'm five minutes away. I'm flying. Just stay calm. Breathe. You're gonna be okay."
